Just who do you think will win it?
My vote goes to Reggie Bush. I wish I could go out on a limb, but I dont see anyone being a better powerhouse on offense.

Matt Leinart

I find it quite funny that Cody Hodges from Texas Tech is on that list even though he hasnt thrown but a handful of passes in his career...but everybody knows whoever plays qb in that system is gonna throw 40 TDs.

I think I should personally get to pick the Maxwell Award, because it comes from my family.

My pick is DeAngelo Williams. But either Leinart or Bush have great chances to win it.

Should we start a "(fill in best small-college, retired NFL player name) Award" and run it through CDS--polling Div IAA, Div II, Div III and NAIA coaches?
Criteria= Outstanding small College Athlete of the Year.

Why don't we all pick a Mr. Irrelevant? Who will be the last person drafted in the 2006 draft?
Its always someone youve never heard of, so picking him will be tough. However, Im going to go with Adam Tafralis QB San Jose State.

Omar Jacobs Bowling Green QB JR for Maxwell and Dimitri Carr LB from Grambling for Mr. Irrelevant!

Come on guys...my post was at least semi-serious....
Mr. Irrelevant: Josh Radulski, TE, Maine

Mr. Irrelevant: PK Greg Kuehn - William and Mary
Steve... maybe the "Howie Long Award" (Villanova grad)? If we could get him on board it would be huge given his status.

Yea...Howie would be a good choice...Of course, it might be tough to top that WR from Mississippi Valley State, though...What was his name?? ...lol

I figured I'd go with someone who is already a Hall of Famer. Sure, that other guy might get there someday when he finally retires (or dies of old age, whichever comes first)... but there're no guarantees in life.

Yea...but he already has one, my good fellow. As Monty Python said: "He's already got one...it's very nice" (in an outrageous French accent....)

Steve didn't want to give an award to the best small-school guy of all time. What he wants to do is START an award that would be coordinated by the site - it would be given to a current non-D1 guy who is voted on by coaches et. al. What we were debating was who to name the award in honor of...
I thought Howie Long would be good as a Villanova (I-AA) grad and a HoFer. Plus, with his visibility and popularity, if he got behind the award it would be a boon for our site.

I like it though I'd call it the Elijah Pitts Award, in honor of the Packer DB, because supposedly when he was drafted the names were reversed, do Plilander Smith was selected from Elijah Pitts!

Seriously I say both Jerry Rice and Howie offense and defense!

OK...so how about "The Rice and Long Award"...nice ring to it!!!
jwest
Jun 29 2005, 9:30:01 AM
Maybe we could get a corporate sponsor... say, Uncle Ben's?
Then it could be the "CDS-Uncle Ben's LONG Grain Wild RICE award"...
Nevermind... just ignore me.

Honestly, I like the idea of a Long Award for the top defensive player and a Rice Award for the top offensive player.

...till he got hurt....
I love that...OK...the Rice Award and the Long Award. We will try to get a stable of coaches lined up to vote on that and each CDS mod will also have a vote. Should the criteria be:
1. best NFL potential or
2. best college production?
Since we are a scouting service I am leaning towards #1.
Thoughts??
Who wants to contact Jerry and Howie??

I think that maybe the award should have a few criteria...
1) College production + 2) Potential to play at the next level + 3) Good citizen
If Moe Thompson emerges at a D2 school following his expulsion from an SEC and can play in the fall, he'll have as much production and NFL potential as anyone, but he's not the type of player we'd want to showcase, is he?

Hmmm...interesting question. Maybe we should include a minimum of two years in a IAA-NAIA program?
jwest
Jun 30 2005, 12:28:14 PM
I think any situations like that could be avoided by merely telling the voters that they are voting for a non-Division I offensive/defensive player whose superior performance on the field makes him an NFL prospect and who displays the leadership, citizenship, and overall good character displayed by the player the award is named after. (That would obviously need some serious word-smithing, but you get the point.)
