ALABAMA
Brodie Croyle QB-Brodie once agian impressed me with his accuracy and leadership. Even though it was a low scoring game Brodie still played very good. He finished going 17-27 and he mostly threw short outs and crosses all game and was incredibly accurate. A few negatives i noticed about Brodie is sometimes he holds the ball to long and ended up getting sacked. It also seemed like when he saw a wide open reciever he would get excited and overthrow him;he overthrough to easy TD's. Overall he played very good and showed great leadership on that last drive when he hit D.J. Hall for 43 yds.Slightly Positive
Leron Mclain FB-Didnt have big game running or recieving wise but he did pretty well in the running game. On most long yardage runs it seemed like he was lined up in a TE position. He did a good job blocking and was pretty solid all around.Nuetral
J.B. Closner C-Spent most of his time on Mahelona and he pretty much had his way. Other than giving up a couple hurries he did a pretty good job
picking up the blitz. Most of the pressure came from the outside and Croyle and Closner being 4 year roomates probably helps the chemistry a bit.Nuetral
Kenneth Darby RB-Had a Solid game, and finished with 87 yards on 23 carries. He got the yards that Alabama needed when he had to. He really stepped up on the last drive, but was pretty silent the rest of the game. He was facing a great run stopping team though.Nuetral
Mark Anderson DE- I wasnt impressed with him today he was really a non-factor. He had good backside pursuit, but rarely ever put pressure on the QB or made tackles in the run game.Negative
Roman Harper Stalk about a GREAT GAME. He stepped up when they really needed it, and you could say he saved the game for them. He had 6 tackle and 2 FF one of which was with 5 minutes left, and Tennessee had it on the Bama 10 and wouldve given Tennessee a first down. He was all over the place he played well in coverage as well.Very Positive
Charlie Peprah S Wow, all around great safety by the Crimson Tide. he had 5 tackles it seemed like more though, and he also had a FF in the Tide redzone on Tennessee first drive. He did drop an easy interception, but it was hit by the UT WR.Positive
Anthony Madison CB- He didnt get the ball thrown to his side very often. He was obviosly pretty good in coverage except for one play that put UT in the redzone where he decided to to try to play the man other than the ball, but it was still caught. Nuetral
Fred Roach-He had a very solid game and agian impressed me. He didnt have any great plays or anything but he made good tackles and was stuffing the run all game. He did great shooting the gaps but he had some trouble going straight up agianst blockers and he overpursued a couple times.Nuetral
Demeco Ryans- Had a great game i still think he's a but overhyped by Kirk and Lee though. He is a pure tackler and has great lateral speed. He led the team with 11 tackles and he had a FR as well as a INT on a hail mary the last play of the game. He is a playmaker, but he get alot of his tackles on special teams. Hes a great player, but I dont think that hes a 1st round talent. Positive
Tennessee
Cody Douglas OG-Clausen wasnt under pressure much at all this game He did good on the DT's and and picked up the blitz well. They didnt really pull that much though.Slightly Positive
Gerald Riggs Jr. RB- He wasnt his normal self today. I think he got hurt early in the game, but decided to play through it. He fumbled in the redzone, and he finished with 72 yards on 18 carries. He was outplayed by a redshirt freshman. This might sound stupid but he reminds me of a future Bronco RB because hes great when he has blocking but not the kind of guy that can make things happen on his own.Negative
Albert Toetna OT- Tennessee had success running to the right, but Bama's DE Gilberry dominated him on the outside. He had some trouble picking up the blitz also.Slightly Negative
Corey Anderson FB-I forgot he was even playing. He did ok run blocking. He had a critical fumble in the redzone with 5 minutes left in the game that set up Bama to have their game winning drive.Negative
Omar Gaither- had a very solid game. Didnt have any big plays or anything, but hes a solid tackler. I didnt quite see what i was expecting to see which was a 8 tackle game and maybe one play.Slightly Negative
Parys Harelson DE-Had a very good game he started up slow, but picked it in the 2nd half. He finished with 7 tackles a FR and 2.5 sacks. He was just beating the tackle outside and getting to the QB with ease.Positive
Jesse Mahelona- He was really a non-factor he finished with 2 ast. tackles and was just pushed around all game by the Bama O-line.He was often double teamed, but still only had a couple hurries. Negative
KEVIN SIMON LB-He is the heart and soul of this defense he was a run-stopping machine and was all over the field. He only finished with 11 tackles, but it seemed like way more he hit the holes strong was good in coverage and was blitzing very well. It says he only had one sack but it sure looked like he got two. He was just the backbone of this defense all day. VERY POSITIVE
Corey Campbell S- DNP
James Wilhoit K- Had a 32 yd. FG and he couldve tried a kick from about 50 into the wind, but his coach didnt have faith in him, and Kirk said he didnt look good pre-game.Nuetral
Others
D.J. Hall WR ALABAMA-With the loss of Prothro this Sophmore WR really stepped up to the plate. He had 10 recepetions for 139 yds. and converted on alot of 3rd downs. He had a beautiful 43 yard reception in the last drive to put them near field goal range.
Wallace GilberryDE ALABAMA- While i was watchin for Mark Anderson to do something his opposite was making all the plays he had a vital 10 yd TFL and was constanly making plays.

Make sure you spell the players names right.

Good writeup minus the typos.
Omar_Jacobs_4
I think he's only like 15.

I think he's only like 15.

I dont care about the age, just getting the names right.
Omar_Jacobs_4
Well that's typical in the young posters but I do agree. The names are spelled correctly all over the net if anyone needs a reference.

This was one of the games that I could watch Sat, so Ill put in my 2 cents on what I liked about them.

ALABAMA

Anderson(DE)-Has a good first step. Has the tendency to overpursue.

Croyle(QB)-Very composed in the pocket. A good release point and delivery. Accurate most of the time. Shows good sound mechanics, sets feet and goes. A vocal leader who has the respect of his teammates. Delivers ball where it needs to be and wont throw many interceptions. Has a swagger. Id like to see him be a little more mobile.

Harper(S)-Good in the run game. Can play at the line of scrimmage or back in natural safety position. Sharp tackler and plays very physical. Throws body around and lays very powerful hits. Comes up with big plays.

Madison(CB)-Holds receivers in check. Dosent get tested much. Good in coverage.

Peprah(S)-Not always a standout on film, but receivers know hes there. Good tackler, good in support, and good leader on defense.

Roach(LB)-Very active linebacker. Strong at the point of attack. Has had ups and downs in his career.

Ryans(LB)-Usually is all over the field. Will drop back into coverage, and is decent there. Plays very well on special teama. Simply will not miss tackles. Very good run/pass recognition and adapts accordingly.

McLain(FB)-Not flashy, but gets job done. Rolls downhill and is tough to stop. Makes plays on special teams.

Closner©-A rock, tough player who dosent let much get by him. Keeps Croyle and the offense running.

Darby(RB)-A workhorse. He almost never goes for a loss when on a run. Very underrated who runs a little like Carnell Williams. Able to shift inside or out. Is very patient when looking for holes and finds them and hits them with speed. Good at contact and picks up yards after.

Others to consider
Gilberry DL
Hall WR
Brown WR

TENNESSEE

Riggs(RB)-Always goes for positive yardage despite facing a loaded box. Very strong back who tumbles downhill and takes defenders with him. Great combo of size and speed and power. Very good after contact. Tough runner who has played with injury. Needs to improve in the passing game.

Gaither(LB)-Big roamer who is consisitently making plays. A big prensence at the linebacker position. Tough tackler who wont miss many and gets to ball regardless.

Haralson(DE)-Good motor who keeps it running for 4 quarters. Good closing speed off the snap who makes up ground in a hurry. Strong and many times will just push over his opponent. Gets by opponent more times than not and finds his way into the backfield. Has good speed.

Mahelona(DT)-Can get held up at times, but is due to double teams. Good motor who wont give up on a play. A very good penetrator who will get to the QB or ball carrier. Has very good upper body strength and is insanely strong and uses it to his advantage. Just a little small for my taste, but has everything you look for.

Toeaina(OT)-Starts at right tackle. Is a big body and will have a tendancy to play high. He can be erratic at times. He will plow holes for the running game and will get downfield to finsi the play.

Simon(LB)-Good, sure tackler. Will make a play anywhere on the field. A good tackler and vocal leader of a good defense. No apparent weaknesses.

Campbell(S)-OUT

Anderson(FB)-Big fullback. Not quick, but hits hole hard or hits the defender hard. Is good in the passing game which will help his stock.

Wilhoit(K)-Decent leg, but could be better. Not a good average of made to missed.

I watched the game last night (since I actually claimed it wink.gif ) and I'll post my report as soon as I get it written up.
jwest
And here's the official CDS write-up with all the names spelled correctly... wink.gif

If you came looking to see all of the exciting offensive prospects on the two teams (and they do have some nice ones), you may have been disappointed. One of the coaches during the week remarked that there was no "festivity" surrounding this rivalry. He was certainly right. It was a street fight the entire way.

ALABAMA PRO PROSPECTS:

Mark Anderson #47 605.0 253 4.79 DE - Anderson is quick out of his stance and can get around or inside slower guards. Was handled fairly well by Aaron Sears, although Anderson was able to shed the block and force some running plays wide. He also got some pressure on Clausen a couple times, but had nothing to show for it. (NEUTRAL)

Brodie Croyle #12 603.0 205 4.72 QB - A couple weeks ago I compared Croyle to a young Brett Favre. This week Todd Blackledge and Verne Lundquist stated the same thing. Croyle is as mechanically sound a QB as there is. He throws a very accurate short and intermediate ball with plenty of mustard. He overthrew at least three long balls where the WR had a step or two on the defender. He is the leader of the team and the team responds well to him. When it mattered, he led Bama on a 63-yard drive that ate up the last five minutes of the clock and resulted in the game-winning field goal. One of Croyle's best assets is his ability to throw when he is not set - he can throw on the run, off the back foot, in the air, whatever, and still get the ball where it needs to go. Croyle held onto the ball a bit too long a few times and was sacked five times. (VERY POSITIVE)

Roman Harper #41 601.0 197 4.54 S - You're not going to get a lot of glitz and glamour from Harper, but he delivers a smartly played football game each time out. He makes all the secondary adjustments and the Bama DBs are rarely out of position. Harper is a solid tackler who attacks the ball with his hands or helmet without compromising the integrity of the tackle itself. He forced a clutch fumble in the fourth quarter. (VERY POSITIVE)

Anthony Madison #9 509.0 180 4.47 CB - Madison didn't get challenged too many times, but was less consistent than he usually is. He got out-physicaled by Swain and was flagged for a PI call because of it. Early in the game he took the wrong angle to the receiver and the receiver gained about 15 extra yards as a result. Madison is solid in run support. (NEUTRAL)

Charlie Peprah #26 511.0 195 4.52 S - Peprah played a solid game. He forced a fumble but also missed an easy INT. (He had it in his hands, but let a Tennessee WR knock it out.) Peprah was frequently in on (or near) the tackle when Tennessee ran the ball. I'm still not sold on Peprah being one of the top SS prospects. (SLIGHTLY POSITIVE)

Fred Roach #8 602.0 240 4.74 LB - Played a quietly effective game. Aside from a TFL, he didn't make a lot of noise, but was always in on the tackles, finishing with nine for the game. He was effective dropping back into coverage and was not challenged in the passing game. Roach really plays a solid Mike backer position. (POSITIVE)

DeMeco Ryans #35 602.0 232 4.65 LB - Ryans is always solid, but this game he stepped it up even more. He is one of the surest tacklers on the field. He has a nose for the ball and anticipates the ball-carrier's decisions. Ryans was able to make a couple stops behind the LOS and also came away with a fumble recovery and an interception that ended a brief Erik Ainge appearance. Ryans is also a demon on special teams and that is something that NFL scouts should love. (VERY POSITIVE)

Le'Ron McClain #33 601.0 260 N/A FB - Solid blocker who also shows good hands in the passing game. I think he only had one carry and one reception, but he is a lead blocker for Darby first and foremost. He missed a couple assignments, one of which directly led to a Croyle sack, but will improve with experience. (SLIGHTLY POSITIVE)

J.B. Closner #74 604.0 290 5.20 C - Closner really stepped it up today. He (along with help from the freshman guards) kept Mahelona and Harrell fairly quiet. Closner helped to open some nice holes between the tackles for Darby (although a LB was frequently waiting at the other side of the hole). One of his better games. (POSITIVE)

Kenneth Darby #34 5110.0 210 N/A HB - Darby combines speed and power and an uncanny shiftiness into a solid running package. There weren't many opportunities to make big plays against a solid Tennessee defense, but Darby ground out every yard that was available. He never goes down on first contact and seems to always fall forward. Darby does need to do a better job of reading his blocks when he's in space. (POSITIVE)

Others to watch:
DJ Hall (Soph WR) - Hall was the offensive hero of the game. He hauled in 10 passes and was clearly Croyle's go-to guy. Hall presents a nice target at 6' 3" and uses his body to shield the defender well. He has very good speed to go with his size. He'll need to add some bulk over the next year or two.

Keith Brown (Soph WR) - Brown had a shaky day. He let a ball go through his hands on fourth down and also fumbled another ball early in the game. He did contribute four short receptions to the effort.

Wallace Gilberry (Soph DE) - This was the Gilberry I had hoped to see all along. Gilberry was able to take advantage of Toeaina on passing downs and create havoc in the backfield. He played a smart game, staying at home on a reverse and throwing the ball-carrier for a loss on the play. Gilberry also was able to fight through the blocks and contribute to the run defense.

TENNESSEE PRO PROSPECTS:

Jason Allen #18 602.0 202 4.41 CB - DNP (But made the trip and was encouraging teammates from the sidelines.)

Cody Douglas #70 604.0 330 5.40 OG - Douglas played well. He was able to get some push in the running game and kept the interior linemen from getting into the backfield. I don't know if he's still suffering from an injury, but he didn't move very well when he had to. (SLIGHTLY POSITIVE)

Omar Gaither #44 602.0 230 4.48 LB - Gaither played well, taking on the lead blocker in most cases and allowing his teammates to finish the play. When Gaither had the opportunity to make the play, he was a sure tackler and got to the ball-carrier quickly. He has excellent pursuit and is able to make plays anywhere on the field. (SLIGHTLY POSITIVE)

Parys Haralson #98 602.0 248 4.80 DE - Haralson was relentless and eventually wore down Kyle Tatum. Haralson wasn't a big factor in the game early, as Bama was running inside the tackles, but he was able to get off the block and grab Darby from behind a couple times. He used his speed to get after Croyle from an inside stunt and also from an edge speed rush. Haralson appeared to be one of the best conditioned players on the line and made a lot of plays in the fourth quarter. (VERY POSITIVE)

Jesse Mahelona #55 602.0 297 4.85 DT - Mahelona faced double-teams for much of the game and was really unable to make much impact. He was unable to get off the blocks to make many tackles and couldn't use his speed to get into the backfield. (SLIGHTLY NEGATIVE)

Gerald Riggs #21 600.0 223 4.48 HB - Riggs showed some good power between the tackles and decent footwork to make some people miss in space. He clearly wasn't healthy in this game and sat out for long stretches at a time. Riggs also fumbled in the red zone early in the game when he was fighting for extra yards. He was still able to make positive plays late in the game. Riggs also has good hands and needs to be more involved in the passing game. (NEUTRAL)

Albert Toeaina #72 606.0 355 5.34 OT - Toeaina is big. That's his best quality as an offensive lineman. Beyond that it's hard to say too much else positive. He does drive block well on running plays. Other than that he struggles. Toeaina is slow and doesn't show good footwork in pass blocking and he doesn't hold a block well. Toeaina doesn't play smart and gets flagged for too many stupid penalties. (NEGATIVE)

Kevin Simon #2 511.0 234 4.48 LB - Simon played an outstanding game. He was able to find the ball carrier and make plays on both sides of the field. He's a solid tackler and is able to run plays down from behind with his speed. Simon is very active and doesn't take any plays off. He was able to get into the backfield on a few occasions, sacking Croyle once and hurrying him another time. (POSITIVE)

Corey Campbell #26 603.0 190 4.47 S - Showed up on the Participation Report as active, but I didn't see him at all...?

Cory Anderson #45 603.0 275 N/A FB - Anderson is a huge lead back who is almost like having another guard on the field. He was also active in the passing game, making a couple nice receptions (although one of them was fumbled on the 2-yard line when Tennessee looked to be heading towards the only TD of the game). He's a bit of a plodding runner, but he moves well enough. (NEUTRAL)

James Wilhoit #25 510.0 190 N/A K - Made his only field goal attempt of the game. (NEUTRAL)

Others to watch:
Jason Hall (Senior DE) - A big DE who gets after the QB. He had a sack and a half against Croyle. Hall is also stout against the run. He could be a late round draft pick.

Aaron Sears (Junior LT) - Sears has improved dramatically this season. He kept Mark Anderson quiet most of the day and is gaining a lot of confidence. The Tennessee rushing game generally runs behind Sears.

Arian Foster (RS Frosh RB) - Foster came into the game after Riggs's fumble and seemed to provide a nice spark for the Vols. He has more speed than Riggs and was able to knock off a couple nice runs. The Bama defense quickly adjusted and he finished with only 53 yards on his 14 carries.

Richie Gandy (Senior C) - Gandy has been hobbled by injuries and wasn't available to start the season. He has settled in nicely at center now and really played well against Bama. He was able to get some good push and drive the Bama DTs backwards. He also called a nice game from the line as the blocking assignments were, for the most part, picked up.

Sorry jwest. I had to work and my buddy taped the 2 SEC games so I have to do them this week. Back to Big 10 next week.
DaveJ
Great review, Jeff. I enjoyed reading it... and, not to disrepsect out free member, I found your review enjoyable as well, Chiefs#56DJ.

Jeff, you were right.. a TON of prospects in this one. Was your GameTracker sheet 3 pages long? wink.gif
jwest
That's the beauty of the SEC... teams like Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, etc. have lots of pro prospects - and not just the seniors. It's even worse when it is a conference game and you have two of those top-tier teams. Those write-ups take some time to produce.

Thanks for the kudos though.
