Fresno has not been able to win at Hawaii for a long time. They finally pulled the trick Saturday behind the solid pass defense of Richard Marshall and Co. and the great running of HB Wendell Mathis (19-229-3). Hawaii is simply outmatched this year on the defensive side of the football, but their offense (as always) shows a lot of promise behind sensational Freshman WR Davone Bess (14-159-1) and the gutsy QB play of Colt Brennan.
SCOUTING SUMMARY:
College: Fresno State Conference: Western Athletic
Name Jersey# Height Weight Speed Position
Richard Marshall 24 511.0 190 4.45 CB: Richard played very solid football again, and proved he is a name to remember (he has declared to me his intentions to declare though he is just a junior) for the middle rounds of the 2006 NFL Draft. I had him for 5 tackles and a pass defensed. POSITIVE
Paul Pinegar 13 604.0 220 N/A QB: A rather lackluster performance by Paul. His stats were very average and he didn't show me a lot of passion in this game. Probably still suffering from the time lag. 2 picks and only 1 TD pass. NEUTRAL
Dwayne Wright 32 601.0 210 N/A HB: inj.
Bryson Sumlin 34 510.0 200 N/A HB: Sumlin is not getting the ball. But he did OK in spot duty. Had a nice block, but hardly saw the field. NEUTRAL
Wendell Mathis 22 509.0 185 N/A HB: This kid is like Tyler Ebell at UTEP in size and running style, but he is tougher and plays with more passion. He had the second highest rush total ever by a Fresno back and found the endzone 3 times. He was the star of this game. POSITIVE
Kyle Young 59 605.0 320 5.25 C: Opened the running lanes all day. He and his linemates are one of the most unsung O-lines in the country. He makes the line go, and this group makes the Bulldogs go. POSITIVE
Tyrone Culver 36 601.0 200 4.5 S: DNP??
College: Hawaii Conference: Western Athletic
Name Jersey# Height Weight Speed Position
Samson Satele 602.0 300 N/A OG: Not impressed. Missed some blocks and has no feet for the passing game. NEGATIVE
Melila Purcell 98 604.0 266 N/A DE: Mel was just coming back off an injury and looked very rusty to me. He did tie up his man at the line and set others free to attack Pinegar. NEUTRAL
Others: LT Dartagnon Shack of Fresno is solid and deserves a writeup. Jr. WR Paul Williams impressed me the last time I caught a Fresno game, but was very quiet tonight.
Frosh WR Davone Bess of Hawaii is definitely a name to remember, and it was good to finally see the future after Timmy in Colt Brennan. Brennan throws sidearm whenever things break down, and it amazes me how the Bows always seem to find a productive guy for the run-and-shoot with ISSUES.
