UCLA has made a living this year of their ability to comeback. It got to a point where they almost did not care about the first half. This time however, they dug themselves a hole that was too deep to climb out of. A bad day all around for the Bruins, where they not only saw themselves get beat on defense, but also on offense. They even had a TD taken off the scoreboard because of the new instant replay. UCLA now drops down to a tie for 2nd in the PAC-10 standings with Oregon. Arizona gets their first 2 game winning streak since 2000, as Mike Stoops has this program going in the right direction. UCLA's national title hopes seem to now have gone by the wayside as they suffer their first loss.

UCLA PP's:

Drew Olsen- didn't necessarily have that bad of a game, but did not lead his team like normal and was sacked 4 times by the Wildcats. His weak receiver core finally let him down: slightly negative

Maurice Drew- his worst game all season, could not seem to get anything going. He was limited to a stunning 66 all purpose yards! Was not the playmaker that he is known to be: negative

Spencer Havner- not his best game, Mike Bell ran all over him and the UCLA defense. He almost seemed a little tired, far from his normal level of play which makes him unhuman. He is brought down to earth after an all-american season: negaitve

Justin London- injured

Jarrad Page- was beat in coverage and far from his normal self: negative

Marcedes Lewis- the one bright spot for UCLA in this game. Was all over the place, had a huge day with 11 receptions for 131 yards with 2 TD's. His 6-6 size was just too much for Zona to handle: very positive

Arizona PP's:

Mike Bell- player of the game. Was Mr. Everything for the Wildcats. He was a man posessed with 153 yards and a TD on only 16 carries! He raises his stock a lot with this game: very positive

Darrell Brooks- was good and seems to be a leader, however he is unfit to handle Lewis. I think a position change to CB is in his future.

Glad to see Mike had a nice day! Sorry, to see it come at the expense of our Cinderella story of the year.

Justin London didn't play in this game, I don't know how you can mark him down except for injury concerns.
PatriotofMaine
Sam,

Can you concur? That is a game I didn't see and couldn't tape.
jwest
UCLA website has stats from the game and London isn't listed either as a starter or in the player participation list.

I did go back and see that London did not play, thanks GLM. I was unable to see the 1st few minutes of the game and figured he was just out because of the lopsided score. UCLA drops down to #14 in the AP poll after this loss. BTW Steve, which concert did you go to?

There has always been a bit of a whisper of doubt about the Bruins and many of those whispers have much gotten louder. wink.gif
Arizona 52
Willie Tuitama QB #7 601.6" 216 4.83 Tuitama was nearly Redshirted this year and in just his third collegiate game he displayed great poise, good accuracy and above average athletic ability. Willie Tuitama went 14 for 24 for 204 yards and 2 TDs. Like most of the Wildcats he outplayed his more celebrated Bruin counterpart. He looked like a more explosive Marques Tuiasosopo. Despite Bell's heroics I'd give the 18 year old the game ball.

Mike Bell RB #11 600.5 218 4.56 Once again he looked a little like a slower Ahman Green he was a good receiver, he can block, he has speed and power he looks like first half of the 2nd round pick.

FS Darrell Brooks#6 600.1 203 4.54 Great mind for the game and plays hard, good straight ahead speed and good ball skills, but lacks the hips and feet to be a top flight corner.

Gilbert Harris RB#36 601.5 233 4.67 Harris really reminds me of Mike Anderson, a downhill 1 cut power slasher he had 16 carries for 113 yards 1TD and 7.1 ypc avg.

Syndric Steptoe WR#1 509 174 4.46 The diminutive JR showed heart, quickness, and improving hands he might be a honorable mention CDS AU next year. He had 3 catches for 32 yards and some scouts project him to CB at the next level.

Michael Thomas WR#10 511.7 172 4.48 The best WR on the field, a little like Pinkston, tougher but with less deep speed.

UCLA 14
Ed Blanton OT #73 608.2 346 5.44 Well he's still big but he has trouble lining up fast moving targets, and he must bend his knees more and his punch needs to be more accurate.

Kevin Brown DT#75 601.5 297 5.04 He has talent but like most of the UCLA defenders was sluggish and on his heels.

Maurice Jones-Drew TB#21 507.7 204 4.44 Though you hear him compared to his hero Barry Sanders, he reminds me of a much faster version of Mike Garrett. For some reason he never showed his pop or elusiveness

Marcedes Lewis TE#19 605.3 256 4.61 Though his blocking could use work he showed everything else you'd want in a TE. Hands, speed, route running and body control.

Spencer Havner LB#41 603.6 242 4.56 Looked very athletic but lost at times and less instinctive than I am used to seeing.

Dennis Keyes FS #11 600.2 192 4.53 Only a RS Sophomore but he and Havner were the only members of the Bruins D who were playing hard.

Justin London MLB#9 600.4 234 4.78 His ankle injury left a UCLA interior D that was weak against the run already, a virtual sieve.

Drew Olson QB#14 602.2 224 5.12 Never looked comfortable, nor did he show the poise and command you’d expect from a senior leader, and though his numbers 23 of 38 for 232 and 2 TDs are better than respectable they don't tell the story.

Summary: It's clear that Arizona is headed in the right direction Stoops has them convinced the have a chance and they've found there on field leader at QB.
UCLA is in reverse and this is the kind of loss that can lead to a slide unless the team refocuses.
GLM
Kevin Brown didn't play against Arizona either and hasn't even played a snap all season He's missed all season with a severe high ankle sprain (didn't even get pins taken out until this week) and is expected to redshirt. Dunno how you can downgrade him except as an injury risk.
PatriotofMaine
Boys...are we watching the same games these others are?...lol.
Broncosfan713
Mike Stoops is gonna be a great coach, did you guys see the fire and excitement he had in him?
jwest
How does Arizona use Gilbert Harris... is he a fullback who gets to carry the ball or is he a halfback?

Sorry about that you're right Brown has battled injuries all year and confused him with his back up, who did struggle! I'm pretty sleep deprived! blink.gif Teething Baby Alert!

And jwest Harris shares the TB load but but he could be a Howard Griffith-type FB with a system like the Ram's or Denver's IMHO. wink.gif
