The nation's longest consecutive game conference winning streak was snapped last night, as #20 (and once defeated) Fresno State put themselves in position to win the WAC Championship with an impressive shutdown of the high-powered Broncos' offense at home. Fresno QB Paul Pinegar reminded us that this is indeed one of the deepest QB classes in recent years, and Junior QB Jared Zabransky of Boise State just never really got it going in this one. This was a game where it seemed like everything just went right for Fresno and wrong for Boise. Fresno's AWESOME junior WR Paul Williams made another HUGE statement that he should be in the CDS database (Sam) in case he does declare. He set a school record with a 98-yard TD grab early on. For Boise it was a game of "almosts". The passes were inches off the finger tips, or there were huge penalties against the Fresno defense not called, or they went for it 4th and one on their own 31 in the 3rd quarter and missed picking it up by inches. Boise was not beat up like they were against Georgia, they just didn't seem able to get Zabransky comfortable in another big road game.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Fresno State Conference: Western Athletic
Name Jersey# Height Weight Speed Position

Richard Marshall 24 511.0 190 4.45 CB: Richard was solid all night. He didn't do anything spectacular, but he didn't have to. He came up well in run support. He was physical with the receivers. He had a very nice PD to help thwart a late drive, and he had the game-sealing interception at the end of the game. Richard was jawing a bit more with the receivers than I was used to seeing. Shows he has all the tools for the next level. SLIGHTLY POSITIVE

Paul Pinegar 13 604.0 220 N/A QB: He is still slightly under the radar, but he could be a fast riser if he plays well in the bowl game and at a post-season all-star game. He has tools that are as solid as Alex Smith's and even plays a bit like him. He just had his first baby (Paul, Jr.) and he appeared very poised, relaxed and confident in Fresno's biggest win of the year. He hit all the passes regularly...short, medium and long, and he shows just enough escape ability and plenty of pocket toughness to be a successful pro. I hated him at times last year (as did his hometown crowd even) but he has really put it all together this season. I will not be shocked AT ALL if he goes in the first two rounds. POSITVE

Dwayne Wright 32 601.0 210 N/A HB: DNP

Bryson Sumlin 34 510.0 200 N/A HB: He is a contributor at this level, but no longer shows good long range potential. He seems to be less shifty and slower this year. I don't know what is wrong with him. Had a couple of decent carries in the second half, but he hasn't broken a long one in awhile. NEUTRAL

Wendell Mathis 22 509.0 185 N/A HB: Man...if this guy was just 210 instead of 185 we might be talking about a mid-round back. He shows up every game. He plays hard every game. He runs between the tackles a lot better than a guy his size should. He shows a burst. A poor man's Garrett Wolfe. POSITIVE

Kyle Young 59 605.0 320 5.25 C: A real leader on this offense. The line really rallies behind this fine junior. Solid technician. Not a powerful drive blocker, but he is so technically sound he always finds a way to get it done. Needs to either get stronger or play more like he is. SLIGHTLY POSITVE

Tyrone Culver 36 601.0 200 4.5 S: Shows flashes, but not consistent enough in any phase of the game to be mentioned with the top safeties. He has no real weaknesses either, so he will hear his name called, but probably just barely. Had a couple big-play hits last night. But I'd like to see more PDs from him each game.
NEUTRAL to SLIGHTLY POSITIVE

College: Boise State Conference: Western Athletic
Name Jersey# Height Weight Speed Position

Daryn Colledge 73 604.5 305 4.93 OT: Not a great night for the Boise line. Jared was sacked way too often, but not over Daryn. Daryn did not ragdoll people in the running game as much tonight, but he still impresses me with the way he always seems to hit two people on each play. Solid in pass pro. I was looking for even more punch from his hands tonight than I saw. SLIGHTLY POSITIVE

Lee Marks 17 507.0 181 N/A HB: Had one nice long run, but the Boise line was not opening the holes he was used to seeing. He is just too little to be a factor at the next level. He'd have to be a 4.3 guy with his size to do that...and, uh...no way will he run that. NEUTRAL

Jerard Rabb 1 602.0 200 N/A WR: Solid possession guy who does little to wow you. He's the type who will probably just get lost in the shuffle in a pro camp. He had a nice catch of a tipped ball, and he shows the ability to stretch the seam in college. I just question his ability to do that on a regular basis next year. NEUTRAL

Korey Hall 25 601.0 228 N/A LB: This gus has never gotten back to the level he played at last year. He shows flashes of doing it ocassionally. He is in on plenty of tackles, but he is not exploding ball carriers like he used to. If he is really 228, he is playing like it this year, whereas he played like a 250-pound demon at times last year. SLIGHTLY NEGATIVE

Jared Zabransky 5 602.0 205 N/A QB: Jared is developing the reputation as a great home QB who struggles against big time competition on the road. He is still one of the better prospects in the junior class, but he needs to figure out how to play more poised and confident in big games. He needs to do a better job of reading what the defenses are giving him, and not act like every defense is a WAC patsy and expect that everything that works against them will work against ranked teams. He was just off on most of his throws, didn't make terrible decisions, and his pick was one in which the interceptor was probably screened from his vision by a lineman. Jared needs to show he can rise up to the biggest challenges next year, and so far his junior year has been great preparation for that. I still love this kids fiery style and his tools look OK for the NFL. NEGATIVE

Others:

Fresno State Jr. WR Paul Williams set the school record with a 98-yard TD catch/run. He also had a very impressive cutback move on a screen for big yardage. Great size. Good hands. If he declares, do not put me down as one who will be shocked to see him go first day. HE NEEDS A WRITEUP.

I was very impressed with Paul Williams last night. Wow! Williams could be one of the top receivers next year (although I don't know who will be QBing the Bulldogs and if he will be able to help Williams). Steve, has Richard Marshall said anything to you about Williams possibly declaring?

Pinegar looked very solid. Comfortable in the pocket. Floats away from pressure well while keeping his focus on his receivers - no panic at all. Made all the throws. Clearly has NFL size. He's a riser.

Richard Marshall had that great hit in the first half where he put his helmet on the ball and caused the fumble. Otherwise he didn't jump out at me as doing anything spectacular, although he wasn't necessarily challenged a whole lot.

Culver looked silly when Carpenter juked him en route to his 67 yard TD run in the first quarter. There's no way Culver should have let that happen.

I really liked the way Mathis ran. I think he's still draftable, likely in the 6th round or so. He runs hard and hits the holes quickly. He is an exceptional between the tackles runner for a man his size.

I thought Daryn played well. He kept the defenders at bay, although the rest of the line was unable to do so.

Steve, I don't have the WAC, I did last year but was not informed that I kept them this year. Also, at this point where do you see Zabransky going?

He's going back to school for his senior year. I don't know that Boise St. will be as good next year, though, so it will be hard for him to be a top prospect.

Oh, that's right Sam. That was switched over to Nolen...my bad...sorry.

Nolen????

Jeff,

No. Haven't heard. I'll be sure and ask Richard about that the next time I talk to him.

Jerard Rabb is only a JR and a JUCO transfer at that. Wait until next year and you will be singing his praise. He and Zabransky are developing a nice chemistry together.

You think Rabb becomes Jared's fave target next year over Naanee?

Of course, he already is, in limited duty he already has more catches and yards than Naanee. Rabb has much better speed than the lumbering Naanee.

O I know that, I 'm just interested to see where he'd land if he did come out. Kind of like Jamal Brimmer 2 years ago, he was an estimated 3rd rounder if he came out, stayed, but then went undrafted the following year.

Scroll down about halfway.
