...in Cincinnati for Brian Redden.
He weighed in at 257 pounds. His best 40-time was a 4.60. He did a 34.5" vertical, a 9'10" LJ, a 4.10 SS, a 7.10 3-cone and 37 reps at 225.
He is the only DIII guy in the upcoming Magnolia All-Star Classic and if he plays like he is capable of playing....look out! We could be looking at our first DIII draftee in quite some time here boys!

I just went back and looked at some of the Combine numbers from last year to do a little comparing...
Those short shuttle and three cone times are better than WR Troy Williamson's!
Overall, those numbers are very similar to Jordan Beck and Michael Boley, two very athletic, but much smaller LBs who were drafted in the third and fifth rounds, respectively.
They are also quite similar to DE David McMillan (now a 3-4 OLB for the Browns) who was drafted in the early fifth round (despite the fact that McMillan only managed 16 bench reps at 6' 3" and about 260).
Keep in mind, too, that Wyatt Gayer's workout today comes on the heels of the season, in the midst of a couple all-star games, before he's really had a chance to get himself into prime workout shape.

Yea...and the 37 reps was not really maxing. It was a set stop number. Wyatt will do (my guess) 40-41...

Wow that's great news guys. I'm hoping for the best for Wyatt, he seems like a good kid and, based on what I saw on his highlight film, he looks like he has the talent to play at the next level.

I dont really believe anyones times till combine time. This time of the year everyone is running 4.4 or 4.5 and then the combine comes and they end up with a 4.8. I dont read into numbers or get excited when I here this stuff because I think 50 percent of the time its BS

Star,
I know what you're saying. I hear all the time that "so-and-so will run such-and-such." I know a lot of it is BS.
However, this is different. This info comes from a friend that I trust who was there and saw it.

Nothing wrong with waiting until the Combine for a verified time. The thing you have to remember, too, is that the 40 time is not always indicative of how fast a player plays on the field.
As far as Wyatt is concerned, he ran a 4.71 at the East Coast Bowl on Thanksgiving weekend. This was run on a sloppy, chewed up field, and it was immediately following a grueling season which tends to wear a player down.
So I have little trouble believing that he ran a 4.60 recently, or that he'll get into the 4.5s by the time the Combine or Pro-Day workouts arrive.

Brian Redden just called to give me Wyatt's agility drill info from the Magnolia pre-practice workouts.
Wyatt weighed in at 255 at 6'1.6". He is 15 pounds bigger than any other LB there. Wyatt said he was disappointed with his 40s. He ran a 4.91 the first time, and 4.81 the second time, and said that the smooshy new field turf was weird to run on. He ran as well as any LB there though and a pro scout told him "Don't worry, you're 15 pounds bigger than anybody else here and you still ran with them. 4.81 is good here."
Then he ran a 7.13 3-cone...confirming nicely the 7.10 at Cincy last week and a 4.30 SS. Wyatt says he slipped doing the SS. He has 10" hands also, which is very nice.
Brian has the flu bug and did not go down after all, but he will keep us updated.
Wyatt was a little disappointed that Jay got called down to interview with the Dolphins, but he hasn't been called down yet for a one-on-one chat.

Thanks for the update... Tell Wyatt not to worry about who is talking to who right now... he's got the eye of the scouts and will certainly make an impression in practices and the game Saturday...

So which one is it 4.6 or 4.8 or maybe it will be 4.4 next week. Thats why I DONT bother to listen to numbers even Thomas Howard told me that he ran a 4.3 before at 245.. come on guys but its okay combine results dont lie and some of these kids are going to stand there and ask there agent after what happened dude? I was running a 4.4 before here and now i just ran a 4.9 haha happens

From the stats I've seen though, Wyatt has underachieved a bit, espically for playing D3 ball. Wasn't an All-American this year or an All-Region team (this is from D3football.com). When you can't even make a All-Region 3rd team in D3, what is going to make you such a great NFL LB? He does have all the tools, but he has defintaly underachieved. Not even a top 20 sleeper in my book.
Also, the last D3 players drafted was 2 years ago, steve. WR Ryan Hoag (spl?) to the Raiders, last pick of the draft. So, if Wyatt does get it drafted, he will be the first in the last 2 years, not like in a massivly long time or anything lol.

Wyatt was playing out of position as a constantly double-teamed DE the last two years. He has ideal measurables, flexibility and instincts to make the successful transition to LB (which he already displayed at the East Coast Bowl.) The DIII honors are based on stats, and while his were respectable for a DE, they would have been phenomenal (like the 11 tackles, 2 TFLs and a sack he recorded in the East Coast Bowlx10) had the team not needed him so desperately on the line of scrimmage. If the team could have afforded to let him play LB (i.e. had some linemen) he would have been All-American both years, IMHO.
As far as the forty is concerned, it was among the best for LBs that ran on that same track, and pro scouts were fine with it. He ran a 4.71 at the East Coast Bowl and a 4.60 on an indoor track in Cincy last week. My guess is he'd do somewhere in the mid 4.7s at worse on the RCA Dome track, if he gets an invite--which is unlikely unless he just blows up the IA line at the Magnolia Bowl, which I agree is also a bit unlikely.
No one is saying he will be drafted or be an all-pro here, but we are excited that a DIII guy is getting a chance for once, that's all.

Got some positive feedback from an unnameable NFL scout today that Wyatt has been performing well. The comment was "far beyond expectations coming from a D3". His size and quickness at that size has definitely made an impression.
