This one was a game until near halftime. Houston's PP QB Kevin Kolb was decent in the first half, but atrocious in the second--throwing 3 picks and the game away. Kansas's offensive line just wore out the Houston d-line, and the rushing game for KU was very solid all night.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Kansas Conference: Big 12 Columnist: Various
Name # Ht Wt Speed Pos Class

Charlton Keith 99 605.0 225 N/A DE 2006: Man...this is a guy we have UNDER-RATED BIG TIME. If he can add 20-30 pounds he could be a major force as a 3rd-down rusher. He plays a smart brand of football, is aware in coverage. Takes good pursuit angles, delivers a pop with his hands at the LOS and gets to the ball carrier. 20+ TFLs in the Big 12 this year, and I'm not sure if we have even talked about him before!! He had a game-sealing pick of a bubble screen for a TD that broke the Cougs' back. He gets the MVP of the Fort Worth Bowl in my book. VERY POSITIVE

Kevin Kane 45 602.0 230 N/A LB 2006 played pretty well. Was in the backfield a few times. Was the second most active player on the KU D tonight, as all-everything LB Nick Reid was a bit quiet (by his standards) in this one. POSITIVE

Tim Allen 90 601.0 270 N/A DT 2006: A rotational guy at best at the next level. Made a couple plays, but is nothing special and is far too small to do anything as an interior lineman at the next level. NEUTRAL

Rodney Fowler 23 600.0 195 N/A S 2006: Geez...when I printed my game tracker a couple weeks ago he wasn't here. Glad to see he is now...Dave's been a busy beaver. Maybe you could comment if you saw him, Dave, because I didn't scout him. Seems to me his name was called a few times though. N/A

Charles Gordon 3 510.0 180 4.34 CB 2007: He played exclusively at WR tonight and was THE man in the Jayhawk passing attack. He is a much more polished two-way guy at CB-WR than Will Blackmon and he does everything fluidly. No wasted motion, gets where he's going VERY quickly, displays good hands, is dangerous ATC. Too small to block, but does anyway. He should be a first rounder if he declares. I think he is the 2nd or 3rd best CB in the draft, and the Patriots would be the kind of team that would salivate to get a guy like this. VERY POSITIVE

Nick Reid 7 604.0 230 N/A LB 2006: Kind of a quiet night for Nick, but you can see the talent set is there. He reminds me of Spencer Havner in pass d, and he is a smart QB-type linebacker. He is a guy I would not hesitate to grab in the late 4th or 5th if he is there. A heady ballplayer who will not hurt you with his head. SLIGHTLY POSITIVE

College: Houston Conference: Conference USA Columnist: Greg Herrington
Name # Ht Wt Speed Pos Class

Vincent Marshall 17 507.5 175 4.32 WR 2007: Vincent was the first option in the KR and PR departments tonight, but couldn't break out. He was roughed up and drew a 15-yard penalty on one PR catch in the second half. As a wide receiver he dropped two, but also caught a couple, and had a nice 8-yd reverse run. One particularly costly drop was half Kolb's fault...it was a slant pass over the middle that would have probably gone the distance had he been able to hang on. Kolb has thrown those slightly behind Vincent all year, and he did again on this one. They did not throw deep to a 4.3 WR who was the team's leading receiver and there was no Gordon back there! I just don't understand it. Marshall was their leader all year (69 catches coming in) and they throw deep to everybody but the fastest guy on the team?!?!? SLIGHTLY NEGATIVE

Kevin Kolb 4 602.8 220 4.85 QB 2007: Solid first half. Awful second half. Kolb has a bit of Kenny Stabler, gunslinger mentality to him, but it backfired in the second half as he threw into coverage a couple of times and was picked and did not loft a quick bubble screen high enough to Marshall and it was also picked off for a TD by DE Charlton Keith. I like Kolb's approach to the game. I love his scrambling ability, but he showed me tonight why he is not mentioned as a possible draftee often. He makes too many dumb mistakes and still struggles with accuracy on ALL his throws. He needs another year...but he doesn't have one. NEGATIVE

Anthony Evans 6 509.8 215 4.53 HB 2006: Played very sparingly. This guy was thought of as a potential first-day RB two years ago, but has been injured so much he will be lucky to get a camp invite now. Did nothing with his 2 or 3 carries. NEGATIVE.

Will Gulley 18 603.3 210 4.68 S 2006: DNP...Greg...can you see what the deal is with Gulley? He may be suspended or something. I was high on him as a possible first-day safety when the year began. I've only seen three Houston games this year, but I haven't seen him at all. N/A

Kade Lane 62 601.8 270 4.89 DT 2006: Kade was just another guy tonight. He did not get enough push on the bigger KU line to help his very slim shot at the draft tonight at all. He is a lunchpail guy who usually plays with good intensity, but I didn't see it tonight, especially in the second half, when UH desperately needed someone to rally the troops. NEGATIVE

FINAL COMMENT:

In my opinion Keith deserves to be somewhere in our position tankings. All three times I've seen KU this year he has impressed me. The question is, where?

Hey Steve, I'm working on a review of this game of my own so I'll make sure to post it this evening (after the Steelers game of course!).

Charlton Keith looks great doesn't he? I was so impressed with this guy, he was a force out there. Very underrated.

I believe Will Gulley has been out the whole year with a knee injury. He had surgery last year and was expected to play this season but maybe he had a setback?
PatriotofMaine
OK, great Dave. Thanks!

Yea, Keith deserves to be ranked as a DE.

Be sure to watch for Fowler, as I didn't scout him as a late addition to the database.
DaveJ
Will do, Steve. Also, just as an FYI, I recently added those Kansas players to the database but they still need writeups so I'll make sure that gets done this weekend.
