MPC Computers Bowl – Boston College vs. Boise St. Dec 28th , 2005.
It was a soggy night on the smurf turf as Boston College built a 27-0 lead thanks to 3 first half TD’s from Matt Ryan and some big plays from Will Blackmon and a swarming BC defense. 1:30 remained in the third quarter as Boise State began it’s second half comeback with a Zabransky to Drisan James 53 yard TD . Quinton Jones added a 92 yard punt return for another score but Boise State’s comeback feel short when Jared Zabransky was picked off by Ryan Glasper with 40 seconds to play as Boston College went to win the game, 27-21.
Boston College:
Mathias Kiwinuka (DE): 606.8, 265, 4.65 (40)
Has quick first step and shows power on bull rush. QB hurry on inside swim move. Can consistently drive his man into QB. Sometimes plays too high and loses leverage. Can slide and works well down the line. Terrific initial quickness and speed is evident in backside pursuit. Uses long arms to gain separation and shed blocks. Is disciplined and intelligent, will hold assignment and has excellent overall speed. Finished the game with Several QB hurries, but no sacks. A raw talent that is an unselfish team player and has excellent leadership qualities. Finished the game with 1 solo Tackle and 1 assist. 1 TFL .Neutral
Jeremy Trueblood (OT): 608.0, 322, 5.22 (40)
Plays with Solid Base, ability to locate 2nd tier defender, shows strength to turn and redirect defender. Excellent lateral movement. Uses long arms to gain and maintain separation. Has a strong upper body and is able to absorb initial contact. Keeps head on a swivel. Nice job sliding off initial block and picking up delayed blitzers. Seemed to toy with Boise St. DE’s , throwing them to the ground like rag dolls. Plays with aggression.
Had a Fumble recovery to keep 1st quarter drive alive. Shows athleticism in Pass Pro and power in the running game on drive blocks. Natural waist bender, fluid and natural at position with adequate knee bend. Plays hard to whistle and finishes blocks. At times, uses strength to stun opponent with initial pop. Has very good feet, kick and slide in his lateral movement. Impressive performance with no sacks allowed and although Trueblood is currently graded as a 2nd Rounder , could very well slip into the bottom of the 1st. Very Positive
Will Blackmon (WR/CB/KR): 601.0,185,4.47 (40)
Athletic playmaker that can take it to the house on any given play.
Has shake and bake but lacks elite straight-line speed and needs to commit to running up field with less jukes in the return game. Does possess very good short area quickness.Had several key receptions. Times leaps well and catches ball at highest point. Blackmon has terrific natural athletic ability but is not a polished route runner and will need to refine this area of his game. Can start and stop on a dime, excellent change of direction. Leads ACC with 20+ yard plays. Has Reggie Bush type qualities, is a threat every time he touches the ball. Elusive in the open field. Finished the game with 5 receptions for 144 yards and 1 TD. It will be interesting to see if Blackmon will play WR or CB at the next level. There is no doubt he should have an impact in the return game but whether he plays on offense or defense remains to be seen and could simply be a result of how an NFL team feels he will have the greatest impact. Positive
Pat Ross, C: 604.0 , 298
Stiff hips, lacks ideal strength at point and struggles sustaining blocks. Did show some ability to anchor, does well in space although he lacks fluidity in movement. Most experienced lineman at Boston College. Has good overall technique but remains a second tier prospect based on limited athleticism and questionable strength at point. Neutral
Ray Henderson (LB): 603.0 , 245, 4.94
57 Yard fumble recovery. Does a nice job in recognition, reacts quickly and flows to ball. Plays with a good motor and intensity. Shows speed when hitting the gap. Several TFL’s.
Shows ability to shed and make the tackle. Has a nose for the ball. Lacks muscle definition. Heady player that takes good angles and flies to the ball. Lack of overall timed speed hurts his draft stock but could be a second day guy with good workout numbers. Finished game with 3 solo tackles and 5 assists. Very Positive
Boise St.
Daryn Colledge (OT): 604.5 , 305, 4.93 (40)
May project as OG at Pro level. Does a nice job widening out defender in Pass Pro. Extremely fast getting to downfield blocks at 2nd tier. Uses hands well to engage and control defender. Holds up well at point when run blocking. Does not play to his 6’4 frame. Plays a bit shorter and this may push him to OG at the next level. Shows ability to anchor and has excellent knee bend, rarely overextends. Athletic on pulls and traps. Beaten on stunt for Sack and had a couple of false starts. Has good pop at point. Can sustain drive blocks. Excellent job handling both bull rushes and swim, spin moves against Kiwanuka. Colledge’s versatility is an asset, effective in tight or in space.
Very Positive.
Lee Marks (RB): 507.0, 181
Scat back with good hip swerve and lateral agility. Undersized and projects as a 3rd down, change of pace back. Has ability to make the first defender miss, elusive in the open field. Primarily a perimeter runner that hits the edge hard. Struggles between the tackles. Pretty Much a non-factor and finished the game with 8 carries for 24 yards.
Negative
Other notables: Boise St.
Quinton Jones (PR): 509.0 , 186 , 4.3 (40) Electric playmaker in the return game. Fastest player on Boise St. roster. Finished the game with 7 punt returns for 151 yards and 1 TD.
Alex Guerrero (DT): 601.0, 295, 5.12,(40)
High motor kid that can disrupt and has terrific instincts. Had several TFL’s and was a force the entire game. Has good short area quickness and at 601.0 , has a low center of gravity which helps him to hold up well at point against the run. Finished the game with .5 sacks, 3 solo tackles and 2 assists.
Korey Hall (ILB): 601.0, 228
Hall was all over the field and showed impressive burst getting to the ball carrier. Instinctive kid with a nose for the ball. Has a chance to improve his stock with a impressive senior campaign. Finished the game with 8 solo tackles and 7 assists.
Jared Zabransky (QB): 602.0, 203,
Has above average mobility and did his best to bring his team from behind. Tough kid with good mechanics. Has struggled with consistency throughout the year. Finished the game with 20/35, 279 yards, 1td and 2 INT’s.
