Dixon is the readers’ choice.
……Well….at least the “readers” that have responded to this blog.
In an earlier entry I asked for input on the QB competition between Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf. And thus far, Dixon has received 100 percent of the vote.
The overwhelming consensus is that Dixon has already outplayed Leaf, is already in front of Leaf on the depth chart and simply has more talent. Most agree that Leaf can get the job done but not one person sited a single advantage that Leaf has over Dixon. But readers are gushing of the latter’s potential within the spread-option.
However, one almost universal concern has been Dixon’s durability. He said he’s trying to gain weight but so far hasn’t had much luck. At 198 pounds, Dixon could be in danger of getting slammed around. However, QBs seem to get hurt most often when they are sitting ducks (no pun intended but I’ll take it) in the pocket. QBs are safest when they can run and protect themselves and avoid direct hits. So, maybe Dixon will be OK.

Niether of them had ever even started a game , before clemens went down with his ankle injury .Leaf against Cal lead them in ot to win the game and then against wsu dixon lead them to the win and against osu both them did there part when the ducks killed the beavers .After clemens went down both of these guys had alot of pressure on them to succeed. They both performed very well in those games and they did alright in the holiday . record the last 4 games of the year 3-1 the 1 loss coming oklahoma .You cant really say they suck when you probaly dont even watch uo games and they did have winning records when they played

AJL and ASU FAN....
Let's allow the QB's decide this argument next year. How about a friendly wager on who will have the higher ranked QB's in 2006
1) QB Rating ---1 dollar for every full point difference (i.e. Rudy Carpenter had a 175.01 Rating and Sam Keller had 145.78 vs. Kellen Clemens 152.9 and Dennis Dixon at 142.40) --Well compare #1 and #2 QB's
=$25 (ASU) at this rate....
2) Total Yards ---1 dollar for every 25 yards difference (i.e Rudy Carpenter - 2273 and Sam Keller- 2165 vs. Kellen Clemens- 2,406yds and Dennis Dixon - 777)
=$50 (ASU) at this rate...
3) TD Passes ---5 dollars for every TD difference (i.e RC-17 and SK-20 vs. KC-19 and DD -6)
=$60 (ASU) at this rate...
4) INT's ---3 dollars for every INT difference (ie. RC -2 and SK- 9 vs KC-4 and DD-3)
= $12 (UO) at this rate....
This would be $123.00 for the ASU fan....

Oregon History -
Throughout Mike Belloti’s tenure at the University of Oregon few teams in the nation have been as successful. The Ducks have had 9 bowl appearances since 1994 and a #2 national ranking at season’s end in 2002. Starting with coach Rich Brooks passing the torch to Mike Belloti in 1995, Oregon Football has been able to enjoy 10 winning seasons in the last 11 years. Oregon is also one of only 14 schools in the country to make at least 12 appearances in bowl games in the last 16 years.
Not only does Oregon have great football players in college but the coaches have transformed them into great players in the Pros. Over 40 Ducks have played in the pros since 1994. With the help of the marketing department at the University of Oregon the Football team has been transformed to a national figure. Billboards from New York to Los Angeles have given the Ducks a bright light in the media. The Ducks have also appeared on national network television 38 times over the past five seasons.
Oregon’s commitment is no better illustrated than in its football facilities. With the department completing the $15 million Moshofsky Center indoor practice facility in 1998 and the $90 million Autzen expansion in 2002, the University of Oregon facilities that are unmatched by any other school in the country

Very nicely done AJL2321. The Ducks are not a perennial powerhouse but under Bellotti we've had a lot of success. Most people don't know that he turned down the USC job before it was offered to Pete Carroll. He's a great coach who gets more out of his players than most. Unfortunately who have to opposite kind of coach for basketball. Kent is a superb recruiter but all his players underachieve. I like how you brought up Gibson and Trucks. As you stated they were both one stars who became great college players. Bellotti can also land the big names like Ngata and Stewart. Both were five stars and ranked number one at their positions during their senior year. Bellotti has said in the past that he won't leave the Ducks without a National Championship. Go DUCKS!!!

Apr 5 2006, 7:50:59 PM
The sun broke out in the Willamette Valley on Tuesday just in time for the first day of the Oregon Ducks spring workouts. The Ducks may have felt the effects of the sunshine as they conducted a practice that last about two and half hours and Oregon’s head coach was pleased with the results. When Mike Bellotti walked out onto the practice field he commented on the good weather and at the conclusion of the session he was equally pleased.
“I’m glad the weather is cooperating, it is a great day,” said Bellotti before practice started. “I think that adds a certain energy and bounce to everybody’s step.”
Bellotti’s team is coming off a 10-2 season last year and although some big names in Duck Football have moved on, the 2006 Ducks are as deep and balanced as any team to wear the green and yellow. While each position is up for competition there is no doubt that talent level on this team should give fans much to be excited about.
“I think we’re very excited to start spring ball,” observed Bellotti. “Build on what we accomplished last year, fill in some holes on defense and continue to improve the offense.”
As typical of a first day of spring practice there was no contact and team concentrated on drills, conditioning and learning some new plays. One question that might be settled is that Dennis Dixon appears to be firmly placed as the starter. Dixon started all four games in 2005 after Kellen Clemens was lost for the year and even though Brady Leaf saw significant playing time. For now Dixon is the starter and Leaf is the back up even though Bellotti left the door open by saying that he expects competition at each position.
Bellotti also gave some indication of what fans might expect next fall.
“Doing some things from a teaching standpoint offensively to enable us to run the ball better,” Bellotti explained of the initial training session. “We won’t really know that though until we put the pads on.”
Running the ball more means that Budding stars Jonathan Stewart, Jeremiah Johnson and Terrell Jackson should be getting a fair amount of work. During the session all three showed good acceleration and speed. Both Stewart and Johnson are showing the effects of hard work in the weight room. Stewart recorded an impressive 410 pounds in the bench press and his physique showed it.
Bellotti commented on his budding star saying that Stewart learned much from last year and one of the coach’s task is to ensure that the hard running Stewart learn to stop running when the play is done in order to avoid injury.
Two other players that caught Bellotti’s attention were Matthew Harper and Jameel Dowling. Both are transfers and are capable of playing either safety or cornerback.
“I thought I saw some good things from the incoming DBs, (Jameel) Dowling and (Matthew) Harper,” commented Bellotti. “Sometimes they might have fallen into some plays, but the were in the right place…it looked like they move well.”
The two transfers were among six new players to take the field on Tuesday. Also on hand were wide receiver Derrick Jones, tight end Brandon Bair, offensive linemen Pat So’oalo and Fenuki Topou.
Several players have changed their number for spring ball. Cameron Colvin wears 3 instead of 80. Jeremiah Johnson is now 24 and last year his number was 20. Drew Larson wore 80 during Tuesday’s practice.
Most of the practice time was spent with the team broken up by position and the session ended with a passing drill.
Notes:
Bellotti reported that no one was injured on the first day of practice.
