Lepsis retiring really hurts, and nyyjones people wanted to play in Denver when we were winning. Last season was our first losing season since 1999, the year after John Elway retired.
I think people wanted to play with you when you had John Elway. Since he's left, Shanahan has proved to be remarkably inept in the talent evaluation area, and the Broncos may have overspent on more over-the-hill players than Dan Snyder.
I remember making a post some time back, Broncosfan713, that if I were running that team, instead of bringing in these old DTs, I would have started the young ones they have, who I think could pan out, if given some experience. I for one, am hoping your team improves, because I think a strong conference schedule sets you up better for the playoffs. However, your team is, IMO, quite aways from being good again.
Here are my observations of the Broncos:
Offense:
OL - It all starts up front, for all teams. And on your Oline you can start at LT, with Lepsis' retirement. The rest of your line is young, and for the most part, ordinary. I think OC is a weakness too.
WR & TE - Marshall is a definite keeper, big time. A real talent. Stokley must come back and be effective, but he's really best in the slot, not across from a No1, so you need another reliable WR. TE is okay...not great, but not a weakness either.
RB & FB - Other than Henry, who will be 30 in Oct, you have some good young backs. Overall, a team strength.
QB - I like Cutler, but like all young QBs, he still needs another year or two, but there's little you can do about that. The bigger need is a better OL in front of him, and a WR across from Marshall so Stokley can move to the slot.
Defense:
DL - Again, it all starts up front. I really like Dumervil, but you need a better, DE across from him big time. Marcus Thomas only needs more experience, IMO, to become a really good DT. I am not that high on Burton, and Mallard is too small for a DT. You need another DT.
LB - You need a MLB...period. DJ had a good year...statistically. However, he did not call the defenses very well, and is just not a natural MLB. He needs to move back outside where you had a big hole without him there. A MLB will really help that D.
DBs - Your starting corners are set, and good, the strength of your D. Your safeties are perhaps the biggest weakness, other than the DL.
ST - Punting is a big problem. And how much longer will Elam, who I've always like play? You need to get someone for the return game too.
All in all, you really need to have a good draft this year, or the Broncs could be in for a big slide. If you have a bust draft, it will take several more to catch up, and by then some of the good players you have now will be getting old. To maintain continuity and keep the bridge between veterans going, you must have a good draft. I would stop trying to hit the home run in FA, although I might target one or two players, but not at the cost of my future payroll, or on anymore old players who have seen there better days some time ago.
Now, that's how I see your team. How I see your front office situation is a bit different. I don't think Shanahan is a great talent evaluator. Overall, there aren't enough lower round players, or UDFAs making a real impact on your team that the better teams have. Shanahan made a good call on Cutler, IMO. But once he gets past the 1st round, his picks become questionable, IMO. He did hit on Thomas, but everyone knew the only thing that kept him from being a 1st rounder, were his off field issues. I believe the Broncos would be better served with a real GM, one that's adept at talent evaluation, and for Shanahan to stick to his real strength, which is coaching. IMO, he has too much on his plate to be truly effective in both areas. He should have some input, but the final personnel decisions need to be put in someone else's hands.
Just some observations from a Chargers fan...good luck next year, Broncosfan713.
