Autzen Stadium poses challenge to visiting teams
By GUERIN EMIG World Sports Writer
9/12/2006

Oregon is 24-1 in its last 25 nonconference games at home.
NORMAN -- For Oklahoma to survive its first trip to Oregon's Autzen Stadium on Saturday, it will need Adrian Peterson, better tackling and lots and lots of nerve.

Just ask those who found out the hard way.

"When I coached in the Big 12, Oklahoma and Nebraska were the loudest places we played," said Montana head coach Bobby Hauck, whose Grizzlies lost 47-14 at Oregon last year. "But this was louder. Autzen Stadium is the real deal."

"We've played in some bigger venues in terms of size," said Pat Hill, whose Fresno State Bulldogs are 0-3 at Autzen since 1997. "But the in tensity and the way the stadium is built is a little different. You're down inside a pit."

"Realize that one side has a roof," said Tim Walsh, whose Portland State Vikings left Autzen 41-0 losers in 2002. "The sound bounces off of it, and instead of going off into yonder, it comes right back at you. It's extremely loud."

How loud?

It is the loudest stadium Lloyd Carr has ever experienced. At least that's what Carr said after his then-No. 3 Michigan Wolverines were ambushed at Oregon in 2003.

So loud that voice of college football Keith Jackson once

said he couldn't hear his phone ring for two days after calling a game at Autzen.

It's a zoo, literally -- the Autzen Zoo, otherwise known as the Oregon student section.

"They keep the pace up through the whole game," Hill said, "every down."

It's no wonder the Ducks are 24-1 in nonconference home games since thrashing Iowa 40-18 on Sept. 24, 1994.

Not that playing inside the conference guarantees anything.

The 2000 Washington Huskies finished No. 3 in the nation and won a Rose Bowl. They went 11-1, the 1 coming at Oregon.

"In retrospect, we made an error in judgment," said Hauck, the Huskies' secondary coach that year. "We thought we could play a (quarterback) check game based on their defensive formations, but we flat couldn't get it done. It was loud from 10 minutes before the game to 10 minutes after, and we just couldn't communicate."

Autzen's noise penetrates the ear and silences the mouth.

"You have to be on top of your cadence," said Tyrone Willingham, who has experienced Oregon as coach at Washington and Stanford.

"Silent counts and hand signals will be important," Hill said.

"We had the quarterback walk between the guards and tackles on both sides (before taking snaps)," Walsh said.

The coaches' advice to OU? Get a grip.

Senior quarterback Paul Thompson has a handle on things, but the five false starts Thompson's line committed against Washington is a troubling sign.

Also, get a lead. In 2004, Indiana snapped Oregon's 21-game nonconference home winning streak by jumping ahead 23-0 before hanging on 30-24.

"As Oregon goes, their crowd goes," Walsh said.

"You get behind at that place, you have a big problem."

As Jackie Sherrill, Mississippi State's coach during a 2002 loss at Oregon, said: "It helps to have a good football team, and (the Sooners) do."

Just in case, the Sooners might want to pack ear plugs.

"They'd better be ready for people to get as loud as they can," Walsh warned. "Oregon fans are a special breed."

It's a big weekend for Big 12 and Pac-10 football
By George Schroeder
The Oklahoman
You'll pardon Mike Bellotti if his feathers get ruffled.
The Oregon coach is perpetually annoyed at the idea the Pac-10 is, well, soft. He hates the perception the league is Southern Cal and, well, nobody.
"Any coach would bristle at that," Bellotti says.
Bristle away, then — because the perception isn't going away. Or maybe this weekend, Bellotti's Ducks can help fix it.
Oklahoma-Oregon is just one of four games matching Pac-10 and Big 12 teams. USC has invited Nebraska into its lair. Washington State will play Baylor in Seattle. Arizona State travels to Colorado.
The Pac-10 teams are all favored. Bellotti sees a chance to grab some respect.
"You realize you're not just carrying the University of Oregon, but you're representing the Pac-10," Bellotti says.
Which is funny, when you think about it. Because what would beating up on the Big 12 really mean?
First, a little Pac-10 bashing. Because it's fashionable, and fun.
Pac-10 insiders say the league is underappreciated because of its time zone. Movers and shakers and average fans nod off after a long day of football, then awaken on Sunday to find no Left Coast scores in their newspapers.
If anyone stayed up late enough, the story continues, they would see good football being played by teams not named USC.
OK, but does Cal-Tennessee ring a bell? The Bears were supposed to challenge the Trojans for Pac-10 supremacy; they were a chic pick for the national championship.
Then came the Rocky Top Horror Picture Show. The nation snickered.
Add losses to Auburn (Washington State), LSU (Arizona), Boise State (Oregon State) and OU (Washington) — combined margin of defeat: 130 points — and the Pac-10's reputation was reinforced.
But maybe we ought to cast a more critical eye on our own league.
Yes, Texas won the national title last year. OU has played for a bunch of national championships, and even won one a while back.
But what has the rest of the Big 12 done lately?
The Big 12 North has been a mess for years. Missouri's win over Ole Miss looks nice, but only until you realize how bad Ole Miss really is. Then there's Colorado, everybody's new punch line.
Which brings us to Nebraska's date in the Coliseum. All of Huskerdom is in hyperventilation over Bill Callahan's recent success. But a decimation of Louisiana Directional School — twice — doesn't mean the Huskers are ready for Pete Carroll's latest bunch of future NFL stars.
And it's not like the Big 12 South has much to brag about these days.
First off, let's stop all this talk about the toughest division in football. In reality, the Big 12 South has always been about two teams. Neither is riding high just now.
Texas remains in the national title hunt, but just barely. The Longhorns were overmatched at home against Ohio State.
OU has been impressive enough in two wins to drop in the polls. At least right now, this isn't the team of preseason expectations — fueled by media, but fed by coaches.
Anyway, that brings us back to this weekend, when the Big 12 breaks from an almost-steady diet of dainty pastries.
A few wins out West would go a long way toward combating a growing sense that the Big 12 has been overrated in recent years.
Colorado isn't going to help. But a Baylor victory (real or moral) against Washington State in Seattle isn't out of the question.
The headliner games — OU at Oregon and Nebraska at USC — would go a long way toward elevating the Big 12's status. Unfortunately, the Huskers are about to learn how far they still have to go.
Which leaves it up to OU.
The view from Norman is it's either just another game, or a very big one. Depends which Sooner is talking.
The Ducks aren't conflicted. They've been gearing up for this one for a long time. They see it as big — for themselves, and for their league.
Whether anyone acknowledges it or not, OU's visit to Eugene is big for the Big 12, too.

Yeah WOW what a great game ohmy.gif . I got to watch the last two minutes of the game and it was phenomenal. I can't imagine what it would of been like in person...
jwest
Wow... what a finish... almost unbelievable. I like Oregon, but I'll be honest... Oklahoma got jobbed by the officials late.

That was the best game of football I've ever seen! Eugene was crazy after the game and even on the way back to Portland. The officiating was bad ALL game and the Sooners got a bad call at the end but it was going both ways. Ivan Maisel but it best:
"Two things come to mind: One, both Oklahoma and LSU still had opportunities to win their games and did not. Two, these are the sorts of problems that instant replay is supposed to resolve. All it has done is increase the amount of frustration on the part of coaches and fans who see their team being shafted over and over again."

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is outrage in Oklahoma and Louisiana.
Fans of OU and LSU feel cheated, robbed, victimized even -- all over a few disputed calls that went against their beloved Sooners and Tigers in huge losses Saturday.

A little advice to those anguished souls: Get over it. Refs don't lose games, teams do, and your teams blew it.

First, a recap of the supposed atrocities.

The Sooners took it on the chin twice from the officials at the end of their 34-33 loss to Oregon.

Trailing by six with a little more than a minute left, the Ducks recovered an onside kick. At least that's what the officials ruled.

It certainly looked like Oregon touched the ball before it went 10 yards, which by rule would have given it to Oklahoma. It also appeared that the Ducks interfered with the Sooners players who were trying to field that bouncing kick within the first 10 yards, which is also against the rules.

And finally, the officials appeared to be too quick to award the ball to the Ducks when the guy who came out of the pile with the ball was a Sooner.

Bad job by the officials, and it got worse when the Sooners were flagged for pass interference moments later on a ball that might have been tipped at the line. Even if the pass wasn't tipped, the call was questionable.

Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen said the league will review both the onside kick and the pass interference.

After those two calls, Dennis Dixon found Brian Paysinger wide open behind the secondary with 46 seconds left to give Oregon the lead. Oklahoma had one last chance and Garrett Hartley's 44-yard field goal was blocked.

The game is already going down as one of the most infamous in Sooners history. Highway robbery!

Really?

On three occasions, the Sooners drove inside the Oregon 10 and settled for field goals. The Ducks piled up 501 yards against an Oklahoma defense that was supposed to be one of the best in the country but is now ranked last in the Big 12.

Even Adrian Peterson knew the Sooners were in trouble if they had to rely on their defense to make a big stop.

"I was just praying we would get that onside kick," Peterson said. "Once we didn't get it, things got really ugly from there."

How about this, Oklahoma? Punch in couple of those red-zone opportunities or cover someone every now and then instead.

hmm... i will probably lay out my thoughts over a few days on this game as intense thoughts are in my mind especially after getting back home and seeing the tv replays....wow.....this game went from being an espn classic game to a game that will be forever the showcase of complete idiocry in striped zebra shirts and some old geezer sitting in a booth watching the jeffersons, eating cheetohs instead of watching the replay of the plays...

oregonian columnist john canzano (who wrote a story sunday morning saying the ducks should be humble since they got the break on the calls) has hinted that he's writing a column in the morning (http://www.oregonlive.com) that the possibility exists that the replay official never actually watched the onside kick replay. i have no idea what the specifics are but he says the story is big and to read his column in the morning... stay tuned...

ok let me give my thoughts of the complete weekend......
Eugene was a beautiful place with a great college football atmosphere...you can immediately tell who the long term duck fans are and the ones who have been fans since '94.....

the older duck fans-the 40 plus- were gracious in every conversation, in every story told about the years of support and remembering when there wasnt much support for the ducks...and i will add that i have no hard feeling toward the ducks or their fans about the game decisions...

the younger ones...well i stopped counting how many times i was told f*** you at 75 times....throwing trash and stupid stuff...even had one college student tell my friends 12 year old son f*** you and flip him off....very nice.... the band was held up for an extra 30 minutes afterwards because of college kids cussing at them, threatening them, and different junk....and the promised escort out never showed....

i found the running onto the field by the fans quite comical really....as well as the call 5 minutes before the 2nd half to call the fans back to their seats....wow...

i listened to dan fouts on espn radio after the game calling the end "the most abusive calls" he has ever seen..espn radio out of portland was not to bad....

if i was too evaluate loudness in the stadium, there was moments were it was pretty loud....some on 3rd downs and different times...but it was not Texas A & M....nothing i ever experienced in a stadium still really competes with it....i know that the crowd felt it was responsible for the false starts but look at what OUs line did at home the week before...6 false starts, twice getting 2 in a row...so not sure really about that...i ve been in every big 12 stadium plus 10 others(wont list them all) so i have a pretty good feel of places that rock.

In the end, Oregon's atmosphere, stadium experience, and loudness was remeniscent of K State....bout the same capacity, about the same fan response as far as the jerks and the good ones, and loudness...not K State now but in 99-2000....

extra info: hiking was great and gave me some time to get away and not be so angry....and a duck fan bought me and my entire entourage breakfast because of guilt.....sweet!

I'm sorry to hear about the younger fans. That's never excusable however, I've never gone to any football game on the road and not gotten cursed at. If that made a big impression then you must not get to enough road games. When I was at the Bronco game in mile high last year and got cursed at repeatedly. It's called bad fans and every stadium has them.
Speaking of bad taste, the Sooner fans that won't stop calling the refs and sports writers are really bad. Yes, there were bad calls in the game but it went BOTH ways. Stewart was down on the fumble, Kelly pushed of Thurmond for a TD, the play clock expired on the Sooners twice, the pass interference call was on 1st down not 3rd or4th down, you could have made the field goal!!!! I'm truly sorry about the terrible calls late in the game but welcome to football. Does anyone remember the Super Bowl last year? That was a lot worse as far as one sided calls and you didn't hear the Seahawks president demanding outrageous things!
This is not directed at you bobstoops I'm just tired of the other fans and TV personalities that didn't watch the entire game and comment only on the two replays.
Broncosfan713
I just wrote up the game in our evaluations forum. My thoughts are that it was a very good hard fought game. Both RB's were as good as advertised and both will be top 10 picks in the NFL Draft. Give Oregon credit for coming back and blocking that last minute field goal, but they were also given some very favorable calls. But like you said WB, teams lose games, not refs.
oh no problem and enjoy reading your posts btw....good luck against the sun devils too...i dont get into personal name calling and respect all of your views and have too...because both you and i look thru green tinted and crimson tinted glasses at this whole thing and thats the way it is...i apologize in advance if i ever come across offensive or in a attacking matter..you can fly to oklahoma and beat me up...

No excuses for these sooner fans, most of which have never been to a game, calling and being stupid....they are the 99-2000 fans that dont know jack about the history of the program....

you know the only big 12 schools that i have been cussed at were at k state and colorado.....and nebraska is a place i love to go to games.....never has been a bad road trip....alabama was a tremendous road trip...never was cussed at......ucla was another place that it wasnt like that.....not to us anyway.....

absolutely the positives outweighed the negatives....and most of the duck fans we spent time with made the trip to norman in the 31-7 game and said they really enjoyed the experience and the way they were treated here....
the thing that is irritating, and obviously the commissioner of the pac 10 agrees, is that those calls at the end were not judgement calls...

a holding here or there, down by contact or other calls that were made that were terrible throughout the game were judgement calls....and i agree that they went both ways....but its not about one sided calls...

the calls at the end were not judgement because they, quoting dan fouts on espn radio, "were painfully obvious to anyone with eyes", and were reviewed...the example bob stoops gave today was the questionable late hit on AD out of bounds....stoops said thats not even an issue because it was a judgement call and he said "we were on both sides of calls, good and bad, during the game....

but when you stop the game, which is not done for the other calls, and take time to look at over and over and over again.....and you see, even in tom hanson's eyes and gordon riese's eyes(now), how awful the review was, thats a big problem....

wb, all this led up to an onside kick that dealt with possesion of the ball at the most crucial times, and they inexcuseably and undeniably blew it......

i figured that this would be a 2 or 3 loss season for the sooners, so i am not so terribly upset that i cant handle it....the oregon games were a great series for oklahoma....win at home, win on a neutral field, lose on the road...2-1 is not bad......and this team showed they can go on the road in a great environment and compete with a good football team...

I just went back and watched the last minute or so and both those calls were so blatantly obvious it was ridiculous. I really don't know what those replay officials were thinking.

I've been so caught up in the controversy surrounding this game that I forgot to talk about before the game. One of my buddies flew into Portland with a couple of Sooner fans before the game and he invited them to tailgate with us when they got to Eugene. We had already invited two older Sooner fans to join us who were very nice when the couple from the plane found our spot. We learned that he was Rufus's adopted father. I guess the local paper had an article on him the day before but I didn't catch it. He was really a cool guy and his story is even more inspiring. He was Rufus's high school coach and he adopted him from a very bad situation.
I also had the pleasure of sitting next to two Sooner fans for the entire game! They kept us informed of who the Sooner players were and vice verse. Anyway, in my experience Sooner fans are very nice people and I'm sorry it had to end that way.
bobstoops
good to hear man.....the tailgating experience was good for us as we were guests of some duck fans before the game......thing that stinks is now i have to find a reason to come back to do some more hiking......probably be in seattle around the end of the year so may be able to get back as i will be there for a while visiting friends at the city church...

with upcoming home and home series against ohio state, florida state, miami, and other tradition rich schools, i look forward to doing some fun tailgating..
