This highly anticipated matchup showed the nation that the Golden Bears are back. After losing 35-18 in the opener to Tennessee on national television, most people's opinion of the Bears went back to "good team, bad in big games". However, a very good and undefeated Oregon team came into Strawberry Canyon on Saturday, and the Bears, who sported new yellow jerseys, easily disposed of them. On the very first play from scrimmage Oregon QB Dennis Dixon threw a flimsy offbalance throw right into the lap of Cal DB Brandon Hampton. Cal had the ball on the Oregon 7 and quickly scored a touchdown. DeSean Jackson's eletricfying 65 yard punt return for a td put the Bears up 28-3, putting this game out of reach. Cal has now rolled to 5 straight blowout victories since losing to the Voltuneers in week 1. For the Ducks, their hopes of a Pac-10 title now seem thin. the 2 headed punch of Stewart and Dixon never got going, and the defense could not do anything to slow down Marshawn Lynch and the Bears.
Cal PP's:
Marshawn Lynch, RB, California- was having a pretty good game before spraining his ankle and leaving the game midway through the second quarter: C
Desmond Bishop, LB, California- Had himself a very good game. He had a open field TFL against Stewart, and was a big part in why Stewart only rushed for 25 yards on 18 carries: A-
Daymeion Hughes, CB, California- Hughes had the job of following 6-5 Oregon WR Jaison Williams around all day. Williams did not have a catch until late in the 2nd quarter, but did finish with respectable numbers. Not a shutdown day for Hughes, but a great job on a very tall and physical receiver: B+
Andrew Cameron, OT, California- Has battled nagging injuries all year long, but played well in this one. Longshore was given time all day. The Cal oline dominated a beat up Oregon defensive front: B
Brandon Mebane, DT, California- Went up against Enoka Lucas and wasn't his usual dominant self. There was times where we penetrated and created pressure, but give credit to the Oregon oline for doing a rather decent job on him: B-
Tim Mixon, CB, California- DNP
Oregon PP's:
Dennis Dixon, QB, Oregon- Had a very tough day from his opening throw. Threw for 263 yards with 2 TD's and 3 INT's. Was under pressure all day and had trouble finding his receivers until late in the game when it was too late: D+
James Finley, WR, Oregon- Had a difficult day but still caught 3 balls for 39 yards with a score in the 4th quarter: B-
JD Nelson, S, Oregon- Did not have the best game, but I do have to see I am impressed with him. His is a very hard hitter and is always around the ball. However, there were times where he was beat in coverage and where he did not wrap up on Cal RB's: C
Enoka Lucas, C, Oregon- As I said before, Lucas did a fairly good job on All American DT Brandon Mebane. Not a shut down performance, but if anyone on the Oregon offensive line played good, it was Lucas: B
With the win Cal moved back into the top 10 at #10 and Oregon slipped down to #18.
