Kansas QB Kerry Meier tried to play all game with a banged up shoulder and was in obvious pain. He played decently for three quarters before he was finally yanked after getting beat up even more. This day belonged to Mizzou's Soph QB Chase Daniel (5'11.5", 225) who showed he had a ton of moxie and was on target to his two excellent TEs all day. He also is a load to bring down when he tucks it and runs. What could be the best CB in college football, KU's Aqib Talib was outstanding as usual, with 3 PDs, 12 tackles and a 42-yard catch and run for a TD when inserted once on offense as a slotback.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Kansas Conference: Big 12 Columnist: Jeff Carnahan and Jim ODell
Name # Ht Wt Speed Pos Class Game Notes

David Ochoa 74 6' 4.0" 285 0.00 C 2007: Nothing special. Just your average college center who gives good effort. But lacks size and special qualities. GRADE: Neutral.

Aqib Talib 3 6' 2.0" 193 4.45 CB 2009: If he comes out early, he gets my vote as the #1 corner in the draft. Is able to press in 1-on-1 constantly and make up the ground. Fills against the run very well. recognition seems good. Awesome in pass defense. Times his tipaways perfectly. Shows great makeup speed. Does not always play as hard as he could. Saw him give up on a long pass completed out of his area where he might have possibly caught the receiver with 100% effort. But, my goodness, does he have the package NFL D-back coaches are looking for. GRADE: Positive

Jon Cornish 29 6' 0.0" 205 0.00 HB 2007: Man, I don't know. Sometimes I think he will make it at the next level, and other times not. he lacks elite moves and speed, so the 205 pounds tells me "no,"... but...there is something about this kid. Jon became the #1 rushing back today (single season) in Kansas's long and storied history, passing Tony Sands. Finished the season with nearly 1500 yards rushing and 9 TDs. Doesn't look special breaking the huddle, but he has a nice stutter step, great lane vision, good balance and runs hard once he hits the hole. Not sure how well his size transitions at the next level. Showed hands, but nothing spectacular. May not have the speed to run away from NFL defenses the way he does in the Big 12 North. GRADE: Slightly positive

Jerome Kemp 24 5' 10.0" 200 0.00 S 2007: Did not scout him.

Brian Smith 39 6' 4.0" 230 0.00 DE 2007: DNP

Martin Rucker 82 6' 5.0" 245 0.00 TE 2008: Rumors abound he may come out, and he showed me a lot in this one both as a receiver and as an edge blocker. Catches the ball cleanly and really rumbles after the catch. GRADE: Positive

Adam Spieker 77 6' 2.5" 305 0.00 C 2008: Ho hum. Nothing special here either. Bad shotgun snap was the only thing that caught my attention. GRADE: Neutral

Chase Coffman 45 6' 6.0" 230 0.00 TE 2009: More of a pure pass-catcher than Rucker. Not sure why we are looking at a 2009 guy? Anybody know?

Ded Harrington 33 6' 2.5" 245 0.00 LB 2007: Not as instinctive as I was hopin he'd be. Drops into coverage a lot. Doesn't hit as hard as you want a 245-pounder too hit. Not around the ball enough today to make much of an impression. GRADE: Neutral

David Overstreet 8 5' 11.5" 215 0.00 S 2007: A tough guy who plays hard in run support. Puts himself in the right places. Doesn't waste steps. Didn't see him do much in coverage today though, so I can't really grade him. GRADE: Inc.

Brad Ekwerekwu 86 6' 3.3" 215 4.55 WR 2007: A long strider who is deadly after the cacth. Had a 75-yard seam pass for a TD called back where he ran away from the coverage. Aquib was blocked in the back, but would not have caught him. GRADE: Positive

Notes: KU LB Mike Rivera (#40) is an intense guy. I like the way he gets after it, even though he was called for unnecessary roughness once.

Steve, that was my doing. Before the season started I heard that Coffman would develop into a stud this year. My apologies.

Yea, he was impressive, but we only put stud juniors or super stud RS sophomores (i.e. 2009 guys) in the database if we have good reason to suspect they are coming out. It saves us work...but hey, more power to you boss!
