So with Garrard struggling a bit here at the end of the season, and Leftwich injury prone, do the Jags draft a QB early in the 2007 draft?

I think you have to. Personally, I don't see a first round type but, Rounds 3/4 would about right. Leftwich has shown he's basically a Drew Bledsoe style QB who also can't stay healthy. Seems like they believe more in Garrrard.

I think Leftwich is gone after this season (what's his contract situation- tradeable?, cut-able?).
I think they like Garrard as the QB of the future, and will get a guy to groom/challenge him in rds. 3 or 4... (Kevin Kolb, John Beck, Trent Edwards, etc.)
I think there's a chance they go late first round for JaMarcus Russell or Troy Smith, but as of now I wouldn't guess so...
Tornadosoul, welcome to the site. What do you list as the Jags top needs this offseason (besides QB)....?

Well, the feeling in Jagland is that this team will look to add a speed WR (or two) through FA or the draft, a safety (possibly Reggie Nelson if he drops that low in the first round), a DE, and more depth at linebacker.
As far as the QB situation, most think that the Jags will end up trading Leftwich while drafting a QB to groom for the near future. The QB position really hurt this team in this past season (as well as injuries) so look for a change there as well as a shakeup at the WR position.

Tornado,
Who do you see as the Jag's opening day QB in 07?

Right now it is pretty tough to tell, as there seems to be a chance Leftwich might be back, but it is still up in the air. My best bet would be that the Jags trade Leftwich or Garrard, draft a QB in the later rounds, and possibly have a free agent QB or even one through a trade (David Carr) as the starting QB.

Just a little update, Jaguars resigned Byron Leftwich to a 3-year contract extension taking them thru the 2010 season. It looks like Leftwich is still their guy, but I'm curious as to who they will be looking at early in the second day. Perhaps a proven winner like Troy Smith would be a wise choice for them.

Thanks Adam,
Very interesting post. I think you are definitely on the right track, but I bet the pick is Chris Leak. And, I don't make many predictions, but if that should happen, Chris will step in at some point when Leftwich next goes down, and will play better than anybody could have guessed...

If I have a choice between Leak and Smith, I'd take Smith 10 times out of 10. Only reason, quite simply, is because Smith performed well on a more consistent basis than Leak. I think Chris Leak is a few years of professional training away from starting for any team in the NFL. At times, he looked phenomenal in his career. And other times, you're just left scratching your head. The biggest downside to Troy Smith, on the other hand, is his lack of true athleticism. I think he might be a more durable version of Byron Leftwich, in the sense that he won't be leaving the pocket a whole lot. Leftwich was injury prone coming out of college, I just think that Troy Smith would be a real great value for them.
Do you know something I don't about Leak?

I understand Matt Jones is in a frenzy trying to beat off the various credit card companies trying to get him to endorse their card as his card of choice. Stay tuned.
