...depends on who you ask. It has been obvious to this observer for a couple of years now that the UC program is one that has been clawing it's way up. While the score would make you think this was a blow out, physically it was not. I don't know if OSU outgained the Bearcats, but if the didn't it was close. The UC defense won this game. The fly to the ball and look quicker than in years past. This was the unveiling of UD defensive end Angelo Craig, who looked draftable in this one, despite his lanky frame. The Cincy secondary is the best in the Big East though, and they will anchor this defense all year. FS Haruki Nakamura got the POTG and two picks, but CB DeAngelo Smith also had a huge game, and Mike Mickens may be the best pro prospect of the bunch.

Game Notes
Yvenson Bernard 26 5' 9.0" 203 0.00 HB 2008: Ran hard, but had nowhere to got. The OSU line was awful in this one, except for senior C Kyle DeVan, and they just gave him nowhere to go. The injury to CDS Top 100 OG Jeremy Perry really hurt the units cohesiveness. Bernard never gave up, but did not look like a pro prospect either running or catching the ball (2 drops). He just lacks the elite moves a back his size must have to be successful at the next level. GRADE: Slightly negative
Alexis Serna 13 5' 8.0" 157 0.00 K 2008: The punter quit the team, and Serna agreed to step in and do both duties. He was so-so as a punter, and got one blocked late in the game that led to the clinching TD. He did OK with kickoffs, getting the ball down at the 5-yard line, barely missed ona 38 FG, and hit a 31. Does not look like the Groza guy he was 2 years ago. GRADE: Neutral
Sammie Stroughter 19 5' 11.0" 183 4.56 WR 2008: Looked very rusty in his first game back and was totally blanked by the UC secondary. Had two drops, a nice punt return, and what was called a muff at his own 2-yard line that gave UC a TD. (poor call though). Can not grade him, because they just didn't get him the ball. GRADE: Neutral
Kyle DeVan 75 6' 2.0" 310 0.00 C 2008: Kyle was the only thing the OSU line had going for them in this one. He lacks really quick feet, and appears off-balanced and awkward in pass pro at times, but overall he was pretty solid. Sets up well, steers his man in pass pro, slides well. Does not appear to have enough athleticism to be more than camp fodder at this point. GRADE: Neutral
Jeremy Perry 62 6' 2.0" 329 5.05 OG 2009: DNP. Leg injury.

Game Notes
Doug Jones 86 6' 3.2" 276 4.66 FB 2008: DNP...and I don't know what the story is with him...
Terrill Byrd 95 6' 0.4" 270 4.86 DT 2009: Reminds me of Ramel Meekins in his stature and impact on the field. Not quite as active rushing the QB as the former Rutgers' star, but has the same kind of motor. Uses his hands well, has a good burst, and slips blocks rushing the passer. Holds his position well, and slips off blocks to the ball carrier in run blocking. Will never hold up to a double team at the next level, and will get blown back by better NFL centers, but is a solid collegiate DT who should make a camp roster. GRADE: Neutral
Butler Benton 23 6' 0.2" 220 4.55 HB 2008: Flashed, but lacked consistency picking up yardage. A power back wannabee without as much power as he needs. Has a decent burst to the outside, but not NFL-caliber. GRADE: Neutral
Angelo Craig 82 6' 4.1" 230 4.80 DE 2008: Emerging star of the defense. Really puts the heat on the QB. Good swim. Sure tackler against the run. Looks and plays bigger than he is. Will have to add body mass or be looked at as a possible OLB candidate. Has some skills to work with. I am afraid he will get totally washed out on running plays at the next level though. GRADE: Positive
Haruki Nakamura 13 5' 9.5" 188 4.60 S 2008: A tad of Bob Sanders in this kid's game. He has always been a solid hitter, but he got the game ball in this one for his prowess in defending the pass. Set the tone early with a pick that was the first of 6 by the UC defense. Not sure if he has a home at the next level, but he has a home on my football team any day. Smart in coverage. Disguises what he is doing. Comes up, wraps and takes people down. If he were 2 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier, we'd be looking at a 1-2nd rounder. GRADE: Positive
Other notes: QB Canfield for the Beavers was up and down, but mostly down and was benched in the 4th Q. It will be interesting to see what this game did to his confidence. OSU has a killer schedule and they are going to need him to regain his confidence. Backup DE #58 Slade Norris had two sacks when the game was still a game for OSU. RB Anthony Brown, was a non-factor, and he needed to be today with UC keying so tightly on every move Bernard made.
UC CB DeAngelo Smith looks like a future first day guy, as does DB Mike Mickens.
