Most folks picked UConn either second to last, or dead last in the Big East this year, but they are now 4-0 with an impressive 34-14 victory over the Pitt Panthers on the road last weekend. Now, UConn (in all fairness) has beaten up on the likes of Maine and Temple prior to this upset, but they are flying high right now behind Juco transfer (RS Soph) QB Tyler Lorenzen. Lorenzen has finally brought stability and quality to the QB position in Huskie land that they haven't had since Dan the Man graduated.
SCOUTING SUMMARY:
College: Connecticut Conference: Big East Columnist: Steve Martin
Ryan Henegan 43 6'0" 234 4.75 LB 2008: DNP--out with a knee injury
Danny Lansanah 48 6'0" 238 4.64 LB 2008: Nice collegiate LB who comes up fast and looks for the ball. Playing out of position (in terms of where the NFL is likely to try him) at MLB. Has just enough, size and strength to be in a camp. Pretty good leader, and pretty good tackler when he gets there. However, he gets planted when OG's get to the second level. Does not play at 100% the whole game. Becomes a pile inspector when he is tired or the score is lopsided. GRADE: Neutral
College: Pittsburgh Conference: Big East Columist: Steve Martin
Derek Kinder 81 6'1.0" 205 4.55 WR 2008: DNP, out all year with an ACL. His absence is really hurting the Pitt freshmen QBs.
Joe Clermond 58 6'3'0" 260 4.80 DE 2008: Lacks pro size for a 3-4 DE, and speed for a 4-3 DE. Gives pretty good effort most of the time. Gets buried in short yardage situations. Lacks variety in his moves. Gets stoned by bigger OTs on his pass rush, and has trouble disengaging. When he gets free he wreaks havoc in the backfield however. Just does not have the package for the next level. GRADE: Slightly negative
Darrell Strong 14 6'5.0" 260 4.80 TE 2008: Purely a pass catcher. Does not start. When lined up in the 2 TE set, you know he is probably going to be thrown too. When he tries to blcok it is a half-hearted single shove and then he is into a pass route. Pitt does not even attempt to use him in line. Still, he has size, and could possibly bulk up and be trained to block. Looks like camp fodder. The NFL does not have time to make blockers out of oversized and slow WRs. GRADE: Neutral
Other notes:
Pitt freshman RB Lesean McCoy looks like the real deal. He was actually offered a full ride at USC, so you know he's got the goods. He runs the offense when the Panthers go to their special packages. UConn QB Tyler Lorenzen looks like the next great QB prospect out of the Big East. He originally went to Iowa State, but they wanted him to play WR so he transferred to JUCO and played QB. He is a future stud PP. Great size (6'4.5", 225), very accurate. A lefty. Shows enough mobility. Good straight-ahead runner in short yardage, or when Plan A fails. Ripped athlete.
