Wildcats Hooked by Spartans in “Fishbowl Classic” [/font]
Norfolk State used two crucial turnovers by Bethune-Cookman to turnover a new leaf, so to speak, in Virginia with a stunning 38-31 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory September 22, 2007 Saturday in the annual Fish Bowl Classic at William "Dick" Price Stadium in Norfolk, Va.
OFFENSE
Jamar Johnson WR/TE 6’3.3” 226 4.73 40 [est] A RS Junior sometimes he lines up at TE and also splits out wide, he has size to go over DBs and is fast enough to run away from LBs he had a high ball he pulled down for a 2 point conversion that displayed real ball skills. If he comes back next year 15-20 pounds heavier he could be one of the MEAC’s top TE/H-Back prospects. If he stays a big possession WR I think he might get lost in the shuffle.
#19 WR 5’7.3” 166 4.48 40 [est] RS Junior Dario Walker was the receiving standout with 4 clutches for 71 yards and a long of 45. He is tiny but very quick, with good leaping ability and reasonably good hands.
#84 5’9.4” 180 4.59 40 [est] WR Rashad Howard did little in the passing game- 1 catch for 12 yards but he had a 51 yard return that set up a scoring drive. If he has any chance it is as a KR/PR, his long speed is only average but he has good vision, surprising strength and excellent agility.
#5 Daryl Jones TB/FB 5’9.1” 252 4.82 40 [est]MEAC Week 4 Offensive Player of the Week: Jones scored a career-high four touchdowns, including the game-winner with 36 seconds left, as the Norfolk State Spartans snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. Jones recorded 118 rushing yards on 21 carries with a long of 32 yards. He also caught two passes for 22 yards. Like “The Bus,” “The Natrone Bomb” and other squat, powerful backs, Jones he surprisingly quick feet and a decent burst. His long speed and conditioning are question marks. He’ll need an all star game to show he can lead block and play some FB, possible UDFA.
#3 QB Casey Hansen 6’5.5” 227 4.99 40 [est] Hansen frankly did not look much like a possible pro prospect, he has the height and a good arm, but both his mechanics and accuracy were inconsistent. His numbers on the day were: 12 of 24 for 153 yards and 1 pick. If he cleans up his mechanics and throws fewer “ducks” he might get a camp invite on raw potential alone. He began his career at CSU in 2004, did well at Chaffey CC but needs more grooming.
#22 TB 5’6.5 182 4.51 40 [est] Timothy Ferrell Redshirt senior the ‘’ Lightning ‘’ in the Spartans “Thunder and Lightning ‘’ tailback attack did not get any carries, I don’t think he was hurt.
DEFENSE
#43 ILB 6’1.6” 232 4.72 40 [est] Marquez Davis led way with a game-high 12 tackles, 6 solo and six assists, three for losses, and half a sack, talented linebacker with good athleticism and speed to play the OLB at the next level and excel on special team he and Maguell are younger brothers of former standout UD linebacker Mondoe Davis, who earned All-Atlantic 10 honors twice, and signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets this past spring while at UD he lead linebackers in spring testing with a 385 lb. bench press and 465 lbs. both he and his twin Maguell looked like possible prospects.
#41 OLB 6’2.1” 236 4.77 40 [est] Maguell Davis who had 5 solos 3 pitch ins, 8TT and 1 TFL of the 2 he is the more natural “Mike” at the next level, better against the run than against the pass and less comfortable in space than his twin. Both are likely priority UDFAs.
Bethune-Cookman
The B-C offense had few bright spots beyond running QB Jimmie Russell who seemed to account for 90+% of the Bethune-Cookman offensive attack. QB #10 5’8.6” 176 4.58 40 [est] Jimmie Russell runs the "Wyattbone" offense very well, has a pretty strong arm and can deliver on the run, but even for the CFL he’ll need to find another position. His numbers: 8 of 15 for 81 yards 1 TD and I Int. through the air and 126 yards on 26 carries with 27 yards lost to sacks.
DEFENSE[font="Palatino Linotype"]
#1 FS 6’0.2” 214 4.52 40 [est] Bobbie Williams was the marquee prospect in the game and is second only to Hampton’s Baird as a MEAC safety prospect, and wisely the Spartan’s tried to avoid him, however he was still 2nd on the team in tackles with: 7 total, 6 solo, 1 assist. He has size speed and ball skills though NSU stayed away from him most of the day. He has the size to play SS though he has been a FS exclusively for 3 years, he is a good tackler but occasionally misses when he gets too aggressive. Williams will likely be selected in the middle of day 2, perhaps as early as the first 10 picks in round 5.
#22 SS Ben Ballard the “other” safety had a very good game leading B-C in tackles with 8TT 7 solo, I assist and 1 PBU, he moves well has decent size and is a solid if not a “blow you up” tackler. He could stick if he stands out on special teams and back up either safety position and even play some nickel.
#49 OLB 5’11.2” 226 4.73 40 [est] Ronnie McCullough The “Batman” of the pair of USF transfers had 3 solos, 3 assists, 1 sack, 2 hurries and was always around the ball. Like many small OLBs he can be washed away be O Linemen and even fullbacks, however he could be a reserve, nickel-type “Will” backer is he can earn his keep on special teams.
#3 6’0.4” 229 4.75 40 [est] Josh Balloon “Robin” to McCullough’s “Batman” actually impressed me more, he only had 5TT 1 solo and 4 helpers, but made correct reads, fought off of blocks and looked very athletic and quick, he looked like a priority UDFA.
#23 CB 5’9.5 185 James Monds 4.48 40 [est] B-C’s best corner was rarely tested, he came up with 1 solo tackle and 2 assists. He is very quick and has very good hands and hips, he’s undersized but may get into a camp, contribute on special teams and become a nickel or dime back.
