WR Jacoby Jones brought the NFL to the doorstep of Lane College several times last year, and this year they have a guy with similar abilities in 6'3.5", 215 pound Edward Williams. I chose this game primarily to scout Williams, but came away even more impressed by his mate, Virgil Union.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Lane College Conference: SIAC (DII) Columnist: Steve Martin

Edward Williams 1 6'3.5" 215 4.53: Big guy with some separation ability. Blocks. Fights for the ball. Inconsistent hands. Not explosive or a deep threat. Nowhere near the prospect Jones was at this stage last year. Does not appear to have a lot of drive or determination or leadership skills. GRADE: Neutral

Other Notes: I added WR Virgil Union who had 2 TD catches and also handles the PR and holder's duties for Lane. Shifty in space. Showed me good hands and concentration, especially in traffic. Showed the ability to go up and get it, and "see through the fence" of defenders hands to make the tough grab. Reminds me of Hines Ward a little.

Lane has a junior DE (6'5", 270) named Clifton Stanford who will be drafted late in '09. Good first step and really gets after it. Set the tone early by making a very loud TFL on Kentucky State's first play from scrimmage. Other junios of note include RB Marcus Adams, and QB Sherard Ellis, who is almost like a mini-Vince Young type at his level. KSU has only one player who flashed any chance of getting a look by the NFL--DT Anthony Richardson who is fat, but is pretty nimble nonetheless, and has a better motor than you might think for a man with his dimensions. Fights hard. Return man Jamarri Gordon returned a KO 90 yards for Kentucky State.

Steve, for KSU did RG#79 Martavius Mitchell 6'2.7" 329 5.48 Est. and WR#2 5'9.7" 190 Jerome Bryant play and/or make any impact?

I didn't notice either one of those guys. Sorry, Bill!
