Junes Jones is going to need to start bringing heart medication along on his road trips. Hawaii narrowly escaped Reston, LA with an OT win over LA Tech earlier in the season, and they remained undefeated with a dramatic comeback win over San Jose State on Friday. QB Colt Brennan was really, really stuggling with wet turf for 3+ quarters, but got his act together in the 4th quarter to keep his name in the Heisman discussion with his 6-0 Warriors still undefeated. By my count, the senior signal caller was 45 of 75 for 546 yards, 4/4. San Jose State has perhaps the best pair of big, physical corners in college football with Dwight Lowery and Christoper Owen, and they did a decent job defending the run and shoot for much of the day, but it was unheralded Hawaii CB Myron Newberry who was the hero in this one, intercepting SJSU's QB Trafalis in the end zone in overtime to seal the win.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

Hawaii:

Colt Brennan 15 6'2.4", 200, QB 2008: What an up and down game for Brennan. He threw 5 picks earlier this year, and threw 4 more tonight. He struggled with his accuracy all night--until it really mattered, and then he was miraculous. Soggy field was probably the problem for him, but he was missing constantly early on, and did not seem to be at all in sync with his receivers. Short, quick release. Good mobility. Worry about him running with his size, though. Leader. Tremendous system QB who has NFL ability not matter what system you want to put him in. GRADE: Neutral

Davone Bess 7 5'10", 187, WR 2009: Davone is simply amazing. Flashes great hands. Great YAC ability. Realy wiggles after the catch. Tough. Good lower body strength. An Andre Rison clone. GRADE: Positive

Jason Rivers 84 6'2", 186, WR 2008: As much as I love Bess, I think Jason could develop into an even better pro. Very good leaping ability. A bit inconsistent with the hands, but I think he will mature into a fine middle-round find for somebody. They say he runs 4.4...but I am guessing he's a little slower than that. Fights for the ball. Runs over people after the catch. GRADE: Positive

Michael Lafaele 67 6'0", 306 DT 2008: A true warrior. Slugs it out (literally) in the trenches, and really uses his hands to keep the O-linemen's hands off of him. Fights through the double team. Shows good lateral quickness. Does not really bull rush, but pushes the pocket. Slaps people away. Good loop move--which he may use a bit to much. Good stamina (lost 30 pounds during the off-season.) May have a shot if he gets in camp. A pretty firey, relentless guy, who is a bit under-sized for NFL NT, but he has everything else you look for. GRADE: Slightly positive

Gerard Lewis 23 5'9", 175 CB: Tough little smurf who will come up and whack you. Nice turn and go. Very fluid hips. Smacks people on the sidelines. Gets run over by bigger backs, but what do you expect from a 175-pounder. Competes hard. A bit of Ellis Hobbs in his game. GRADE: Neutral

San Jose State:

Dwight Lowery 25 6'1", 185 CB 2008: Has the whole package physically. Great punt returner. Tough battler. Good hands for the pick (even though went right through his hands for a TD in this one). Impressive physical specimen. More of a cover 2 corner than man-on-man guy. May bulk up a tad and make a very good NFL safety. Explosive player. GRADE: Positive

Yonus Turner 34 5'7", 180 RB 2008: DNP--injury.

Matt Castello 34 5'10" 215 MLB 2008: Nice little college LB. Grade: neutral

Waylon Prather 15 6'3", 220 P 2008: Has the size you want, and a pretty good leg. Had a 52-yarder in the first half, and 2 punts inside the 20 late in the game when SJSU was trying to hold off the Hawaii comeback. GRADE: positive

Other Notes:

Brett...there are a couple of guys that I would really suggest adding to the database:

SJSU:

#29 CB Christopher Owen. Looks like a 4th rounder at worse. Good cover guy. Impressive upper body. May be a better man-to-man cover guy even than Lowery.
#17 QB Trafalis...what year is he. Big, tough kid who throws a pretty nice ball when he is in the clear.

Hawaii:
#1 WR Ryan Grice-Mullen...if he's a 2009...nevermind, because he won't declare, but he is a Wes Welker clone.
#44 LB Adam Leonard. He was everywhere and made THE big plays late in the game to allow Hawaii to get back into it. Looks big enough, fast enough, and seems to be in the right place a lot.
#3 CB Myron Newberry (is a 2008): I'd take him over Lewis, myself. Seems to be a better pure cover guy...but maybe they were just avoiding Lewis's side, and I am all wet...He has 2 HUGE interceptions in this one--the one to seal the win was great, but the first one was AMAZING.

Jason Rivers, as you know In my "Other Guys" post I highlighted Rivers, the time I have on him is about 4.53. I think he will be a very good pro, at leat a top #2 WR. Lewis might become a solid NB/3rd CB. Leonard and Newberry are mid to late round bargains that I believe could make it. Lafaele needs the right situation but he has good upside. Brennan is bigger and tougher than Rattay, he's more athletic and has a better arm than Shane Matthews but far from a can't miss pro, IMHO.

Adam Trafalis is a senior, he is a guy who would have been helped by NFLE, he's not quite NFL ready. Owen and Lowery are both impressive.

Trafalis did look good but, he's been very unimpressive. I've seen him a few times this year and I don't think he has what it takes. I thought Owens was a junior. I'll check on him.
I agree on Grice Mullens. I'll get him in soon. Leonard is a Jr. I believe and he's coming off a knee surgery so he's back and I'll add him in too. Newberry had a good night but, hasn't really shown me that much.
