Can anyone make this make sense? We're 1-6, going into a bye week, so heck, lets just waive our starting NT. Please feel free to vote and comment with your thoughts.
QuietStorm
I don't really understand it. The trading deadline was last week, why not try to get something for him if you're not happy with him? Same with Texans and Gado.
jcarnahan
This was a real headscratcher for me. It'll be interesting to see if anyone picks him up over the next two weeks. If nobody does, I think we'll have our answer.

Flowery Branch — News of the decision to cut Grady Jackson did not go over well in the Falcons locker room. Several veterans refused comment on the release of the defensive lineman, who had started 22 of 23 games.

One player that did not withhold comment was DeAngelo Hall.

"I don't know what kind of message it sent to let Grady go," Hall said Wednesday. "Coach [Bobby Petrino] didn't address anything with us. You guys probably know more than we know. You guys just talked to him. We don't know nothing. We're going to have to wait and read what y'all put out. We had a team meeting today, kind of thought the team meeting was to talk about that; didn't say one word about it. Had a defensive meeting, didn't talk one word about it. Had practice, broke down practice, didn't talk one word about it.

"We kind of don't know what the reason was, why, what's the next step.We don't know anything. I'm going to read your article tomorrow and see what he had to say."

When Hall was told Petrino said the move was a football decision, he responded: "If that's the case they need to cut about 52 [players], they can cut me too, they can cut all 53 of us. Ain't nobody playing the way they should be playing right now. Obviously. We're 1-6. To single out Grady is asinine. It's ridiculous. We got so many players that haven't made a play around here. It don't make no sense. We gave a lot of people jobs. To sit there and single Grady out and say that's the reason why, that's ludicrous. If you've got something else better and more concrete to go off of, I'd love to hear it. I'm not buying that one."
Other highlights from Hall's interview:

• On Alge Crumpler's remarks earlier this season that the Falcons are minimizing the roles of veteran players: "We all that are in this locker room, we felt what Alge was saying and we kind of agree with him. Obviously, we don't think that was the right way to go about it, but we pretty much agree with Alge was saying."

• On the coaching staff: It's tough to go out there and lay it on the line when you feel as though no one else is laying it on the line. As far as not players, obviously the players are going to play as hard as they can. When you feel like you're not getting – I don't want to say coached 100 percent — maybe they are thinking of something else. It's kind of hard for other guys to play 100 percent ... knowing that everyone's not on board, from the front office on down.

• On his future: "I didn't just sign a lucrative deal where I can sit around and watch this ship sink. I can't do that. I got one more year left on my deal. I feel I can go out and get a ton of money, whether it's here or somewhere else."

Yeah, no kidding. Halfway through the season, and it sounds like Petrino's lost the lockerroom.

I've never heard a player refer to a move by his own front office as "assinine" or "ridiculous". I cannot imagine that there's anyway DeAngelo Hall is going to be a Falcon next year.

But I'm sure it'll work out okay. I mean we used to have that loud-mouth showboat corner who wore #21, and after he left the team it's not like he blew up and helped two other teams get Super Bowl rings or anything.

Luckily, corner is starting to look like a deep position in the draft. Even luckier, when the dust clears this offseason... and there will be A LOT OF DUST, the team could find itself $35 million under the cap.

We can go get Asante Samuel and Albert Haynesworth. Provided Arthur Blank can write a check big enough to get them here.

Anybody else think the idea of a D. Hall for J. Vilma trade makes sense?

Probably for the number 1 if we're honest. I mean, the Dolphins are going to win sometime - they've got the Bills and the Jets in their division. And we've still got to go to St Louis in week 13. This is almost throwing the towel in already - I mean, I can almost hear Bobby Petrino shouting " Hey, Steven Jackson! I just got rid of my big DT so that you can run straight through us in a few weeks! Thought you'd fancy that!"

The Vilma for Hall swap makes perfect sense, FOR ATLANTA, but for the New Jersey Jets, not so much with, as you noted, a deep CB draft this year they can find good CBs even late day 1. wink.gif

Petrino talks with a British accent in your head? Weird.

The only positives are that we have a little more cap room, and that Trey Lewis gets a great opportunity to earn a starting spot going into next season.

Well...as a Brit its quite difficult to try and make him sound American in my head! You knew what I meant though!

Hey, if he stats talking like Rex Harrison, and the Dirty Birds, I guess that means something different on the East End! wink.gif], win 3-4 straight then maybe Petrino will keep the accent!

It's just funny. I'd love to hear a Brit and an excited redneck as an announcer team for a football game.

Well, you're talking about getting a veteran player who's established himself as a top 5 or top 10 player at his position -vs- an unknown quantity in a rookie. Plus, there've been trade rumors on Vilma for a while b/c he doesn't fit the new scheme (those are the rumors). Both players will be going into the final year of their contracts in '08.

Corner is a higher demand position in the NFL, and to me that offsets the probable lack of supply at LB in the 2008 draft.

It makes sense to me, and with all the rookies Atlanta has on the roster now, and will have next year, I'd much rather bring in a veteran to the team than another rookie, even if he's a high draft pick.

I haven't heard one player whom I thought was sincerely supportive of the decision to waive Grady. Joe Horn said the right things in an interview that's posted on the team website, but if you look at his face, it's fairly obvious that he's angry.

The Jets do have many, many needs but the seem to need line help, O and D more than CB maybe you could have packaged Jackson, a decent OT or OG and a mid rounder for Vilma, oh wait you cut Jackson. blink.gif

Unwrap your brain from Madden. Grady is 34-years-old, and in recent memory there's only been one 2 player for 1 player deal in the NFL, and that one hasn't worked out at all for Detroit. We probably could've gotten something for Grady, but we'll never know now.

I'm merely pointing out that Hall and Vilma are in similar situations. Teams don't just trade veteran players for players. However, here are two players who are on the outs with their respective teams (for different reasons), which is why I'm posting this.

Both franchises are young and also staring the possibility of getting nothing for one of their star players in the face. And I think both would rather have a veteran player than another draft pick at this point. Especially, in this draft.

Atlanta will most likely start with 5 first day picks and a total of 10 overall, and there were 11 rookies on the opening day roster this season.

It's October. The offseason is a long way off, but what I'm saying is that there are a lot of positives for everyone involved if this occurred.

There's an article on profootballweekly.com about how Vilma is doing everything he can to get traded away from the Jets this offseason, and Dwayne Robertson wants to sneak out the door before it closes behind Vilma.

Food for thought.

It's after the deadline. He can't be traded until March.
