Navy 46 Notre Dame 44 3OT

In a game with 2 punts (both by Navy), no defensive lines, and just 23 total completed passes by both teams, need I really say more. Good for Navy ending a huge loss streak to Notre Dame. Roger Staughbach in 1963 was the last Navy team to beat Notre Dame. Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada was the player of the game for sure, not for his 6 completions, but not getting intercepted or fumbling, opend the door wide open for a victory.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

Navy:
FB Adam Ballard 22 6' 1.0" 223 0.00 2008: 11 rushes, for 124 yards – had a 14 yard run called back on a penalty. Split time with Eric Kettani, who led the Navy with Rushing yards for the game. Good size player, a slow FB, has some decent blocks, but had little or no power to his runs. To me very weak as a FB, innaffective, and not a draft possibility. GRADE: Negative

LB Irv Spencer 55 6' 0.0" 238 4.75 2008: WOW. Top pick for the Nay huh? This guy was near a bunch of tackles, made a few easy ones but what a poor performance. Undersized, slow, and just seemed to run around like a chicken with his head cutoff. Tough to watch really. Always seemed to be a few steps late to a play. I did see him make a couple of tackles and had good coverage on a pass play. But that was it. GRADE: Negative

Notre Dame:
C John Sullivan 78 6' 4.0" 298 0.00 2008: Team Leader for sure, always in the game and pumped. Nice size, his blocking was flawless. Not a top 100 pick but a great backup center for someone. GRADE: Positive

S Tom Zbikowski 9 6' 1.0" 208 0.00 2008: Ok, this game he sure reminded me of a Bill Bates. He was all over the place making tackles and good coverage. Had a great Punt return when Notre Dame needed it. Great all round athletic ability with good speed. Could possibly be a good special teams player. GRADE: Positive

CB Ambrose Wooden 22 5' 11.0" 197 0.00 2008: A big missed tackle on special teams was about as much excitement that he brought to game. With no passes coming at him, he was really useless against the run. GRADE: Negative

TE John Carlson 89 6' 6.0" 250 0.00 2008: The only top 100 prospect in the game. Solid game…With few passes thrown, had 4 catches for 40 yds. Great leaping catch on a huge 4th down play capped off a great game for him. Most of all he was very impressive with his blocking skills. He hit all his blocks, and held them. Good size, reminds me of Witten when he was a rookie with the Cowboys. Get him to training camp and in a few years you will hear his name more. GRADE: Positive

FB Asaph Schwapp 0' 0.0" 0 0.00 2009: Seems like a solid college FB. Had some decent blocks, helping Notre Dame run all over Navy. By far his biggest asset to the team is blocking, had 1 rush for 5 yards. Really not much else to say here, not that exciting of a player. GRADE: Neutral

LB Maurice Crum 40 6' 0.0" 230 4.70 LB 2008: Both linebackers had good games, Crum better than Brockington. He had a ton of tackles, recovered a fumble, even though the Navy ran all over them (Due to the weak front line being rendered useless) he had a solid game with really no obvious missed tackles or plays. Neutral grade though, why, coming off the field in the first quarter on a time out, his tongue was hanging out and he purposely looked tired. WEAK! No scout wants to see that. GRADE: Neutral

LB Joe Brockington 52 6' 2.0" 240 4.75 LB 2008: Basic game really also, although he missed a few tackles and had some weak approaches to some outside runs. Seems slow, and gets tired really easy. But I guess most players would being backed down the field each possession. I do not see him playing past his season anywhere. GRADE: Neutral

Other Notes: Armando Allen of Notre Dame looked sharp and quick legs on kick returns. Great speed and anticipation on what hole to take.

Congratulations to the Midshipmen!!!
As a former Marine I've been waiting for a victory over ND. It's the first one in my lifetime!!
For those that may not know the Marines get their budget from the Navy and are a part of the Navy. Henceforth, when Congress breaks up the military pie it's in three pieces. Air Force, Army, and Navy all get a piece and the Marines get theirs from the Navy. That's also why there's only three military academies.

P.S. I don't really know the deal on the Coast Guard, so maybe someone can enlighten me!?!?

Kevin,

Excellent write up! I have seen Irv Spencer play much better, but it doesn't seem like Navy has a defense. 44 against Nortre Dame this week, 59 against Delaware last week...scary.

Do you think Carlson can add 20 pounds and still run at the next level?

The Coast Guard plays on the same level (DIII) as their counterparts in the merchant marine service academies. (Maine Maritime, Mass Maritime, Texas Maritime, etc...)

For sure on Carlson, that is why he reminded me of Witten, Starting out he was smaller, I am trying to find his rookie stats and size. But what aplayer, steady, great blocker and great hands. He had a great grab on 4th down. An NFL team can add to his weight easily. Seeing some highlights on him, his hands are like glue, catches everything.

Spencer, you know, he looked whipped, beat, tired even. He had some good tackles, but seemed a tad bit to late on many plays. To be honest, each team was ran all over. The front lines for each team might as well not heave been there at all. So the linebackers and secondaries got tired early.

By the way the CG was an offshoot of the Treasury Department and the ships were originally known as "Revenue Cutters." wink.gif
