Full Version: John Carlson of Notre Dame

After watching the Navy game, Carlson, at 6'6" and 250 is a great tight end. One that will come out lower in the draft than some, yet to an NFL team that can grow him and utilize him, a huge prospect. at 250 he needs another 15 pounds or more on him.

Compared to Jason Witten of the Cowboys (who is having a great year, utilized well in the Cowboys new plans) he is 15 pounds lighter, but a much better blocker, soft hands for a tight end when catching. Witten had blocking issues coming out of Tennessee. Carlson seems to have none.

The 2 seem very similar to me.

It will take some time for him to grow into a solid starter, but in the right program, like many players could come up huge later round pick for someone!

i agree with everything you said. coming into this year i think he was the number 1 TE. hes just been overlooked because notre dame has been pathetic this year. i definately think hell be a sleep this year. i think he has as much talent as any te in this draft.

Carlson has not been overlooked by the scouting community and is solid in all areas which is why he's rated #3 or #4 TE by almost everyone, he is not as nimble as Whitten and lacks exceptional open field ability/agility. He has run deeper routes and in part due to Notre Dame's

pathetic
offense, has benefitted as he is a "security blanket to ND's besieged QBs, but he's isn't a true big-play threat in the mold of past highly-touted tight ends such as Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow or Vernon Davis. He also has had some lapses in concentration, where he'll drop easy passes or miss blocks. With all that said he's an upgrade from Fasono and will be a very solid pro. He does not have as much raw talent as Rucker, Davis or Tamme, he is however a far better blocker than the others. The very raw Kellen Davis at MSU is a true sleeper and I like Keller a great deal also. wink.gif

Maybe so, Witten was terrible when he first joined the Cowboys and 2 inches shorter. CArlson will fgrow a ton with the right team, rather than one that can't muster up a victory during his senior year. Dropped passes, well that still an issue for quite a few NFL players. He will be a good solid fit, and great blocker for sure.
