It's like the two "Roughriders" in the CFL whenever these two teams get together--drives the announcers nuts. Anyway...not too many PPs in this one, but a couple of guys are obviously quite intriguing, especially UTSU's WR Kevin Robinson, and NMSU's QB Chase Holbrook. The game was really close until about midway in the fourth quarter when NMSU's undersized, and woeful d-line just wore down and allowed UTSU's freshman tailback, Durban Spate (Sp?) to waltz all over them. The "northern" Aggies emerged on top 35-17.
SCOUTING SUMMARY:
College: Utah State Conference: Western Athletic Columnist: Brett Walker
Game Notes
Ben Calderwood 58 6' 2.0" 268 0.00 LB 2008: Leading tackler on the UTSU d-line, and a pretty active guy. He didn't get all that much done in this one, but displays quite a nice blend of power and finesse. Just enough size and talent to be in a camp, but he is definitely NOT linebacker material (why is he listed that way, Brett?) GRADE: Neutral
Paul Igboeli 31 6' 0.0" 210 0.00 LB 2010: Most impressive player on the field in this game. He is certainly not big enough for NFL LB, but I wonder if he can be an in-the-box safety and perhaps a dime back and ST warrior. Shows good range. Shows good pass coverage skills for an LB. Solid tackler. Was all over the place just making plays. Reminds me of JMU's Tony Lezotte--one of IAA's top safety prospects. GRADE: Positive
Kevin Robinson 6 6' 0.0" 192 0.00 WR 2008: Pretty explosive guy. Had an 85-yd KOR TD, and looks very quick as a return man. That may be his ticket to the next level. He is currently 4th in the NCAA in KOR average. As a wide receiver, he sits down nicely in a zone, is fearless crossing, shows good hands, and moves like a smaller man. I'll be really interested to hear what his timed speed turns out to be, because he seem to have the whole package. GRADE: Slightly positive
College: New Mexico State Conference: Western Athletic Columnist: Brett Walker
Game Notes
Chris Williams(2) 0' 0.0" 0 0.00 WR 2009: DNP...Out since mid-season with an injury, and it has really hurt the Aggies.
Chase Holbrook 12 6' 5.0" 240 0.00 QB 2009: A bit of a Dan Orlovsky type. A bit bow-legged. A bit injury prone. Stands tall in the pocket and has a classic delivery and a pretty quick release. Throws a nice spiral. Doesn't seem to want to go deep much, but shows he is OK on the deep post. Did not see him throw any deep outs...Lots of short stuff, flairs to the Rbs, short crossing routes, etc. today. Telegraphs. Not that good of an athlete. Could have Bledsoe issues in the pocket. Glad he has another year to prove himself, as his receiving corps (top 2 WRs) has been decimated this season, and it has really hurt his confidence, I think. Broke the NMSU passing yardage record in this one, and now has over 8000 yards for his 3-year career. GRADE: Neutral
OTHER NOTES:
UTSU: QB Leon Jackson III (Soph, I think) is a surprisingly GOOD passer, with decent escape ability. He is also the best P in the WAC with a 41.7 average. Brett, I was really intrigued by LOG Shawn Murphy...He hunts people up, keeps his legs moving in run blocking and FINISHES his blocks. A bit heavy-legged, but everything is run his way, and he opened up holes. Seals to the inside really well. I think he may deserve to be added.
NMSU: Senior LB Dante Floyd is another guy who deserves to be in the database probably. Team's leading tackler. Real aggressive. Far & away their best defensive player. True MLB. LOT Mike Martinez isn't too bad as a college LOT, but he would have to move inside. He has a guard's feet and body type. He plays to the whistle, has a lot of pass pro experience now. Decent balance. Hits 2 guys a lot.
