Clemson hosted rival BC on Saturday; wherein the winner would represent the ACC’s Atlantic Division for the ACC Championship. Both teams entered the contest with two losses apiece in conference play and 8-2 records overall. Boston College’s Heisman Hopeful, Matt Ryan, entered the game having thrown 7 interceptions in his previous three starts. Meanwhile, Clemson ironically entered the game after an unusually strong start to the season and weak finish down the stretch.
The game itself was marred by inconsistent play throughout the first 3 quarters and ended in thrilling fashion with BC running over 3:40 off the clock in the final 5 minutes of play to score the winning touchdown for a 20-17 victory.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:
Matt Ryan #12 6' 5.0" 218 4.90 QB 2008: After a quiet weekend by Darren McFadden, Ryan failed to utilize this game to gain on the leading Heisman candidate. However, Ryan continues to show he has the attributes to be a 1st Round selection in next year’s NFL Draft. Ryan finished the game completing 31 of 47 passes for 315 yards, including 1 TD Pass and 1 Interception. Ryan again showed he possesses an extremely lively arm that can make every throw at the next level. Ryan also showed he has control of an offense, can go through his progression fairly easy and has one of the faster set-ups when making 3, 5 and 7 step drops. On a downside, Ryan has a tendency to get amped up during a game when trailing, which leads him to throw off his back foot and make errant throws. Ryan did show he’s a little more mobile after being forced to scramble more than usual when the right side of his O-Line failed to provide sufficient blocking. Another slight negative was that Ryan could have done a better job of getting rid of the ball instead taking 5 sacks during this game for -49 yards. GRADE: VERY POSITIVE
Gosder Cherilus #77 6' 6.0" 320 5.25 OT 2008: Cherilus entered the game having started every game of his college career, to include his entire freshman year. Cherilus is a converted RT, where he played his first 3 seasons. This game proved Cherilus is not a LT at the next level and is a natural on the right side. Cherilus is a huge man and had some trouble holding up against Clemson’s speedy and undersized ends, something he’d have to face on a continuous basis at the NFL level. Cherilus has impressive strength and a noteworthy hand punch. He also showed some impressive mobility for being such a large man by actually diving at chest level to take out two on-coming Blitzer’s. One thing I noticed that was not impressive was the fact that Cherilus seems lost when not engaged at the line. Several times I saw Cherilus fail to slide to his right so he could assist the LG that was being overwhelmed by a DT when the end dropped back in coverage. Look for Cherilus to make the move back to RT in the NFL where he’ll face less imposing DE’s compared to the left side. GRADE: POSITIVE
JoLon Dunbar #40 6' 0.0" 226 0.00 LB 2008: Dunbar saw his first action in three games after being out with a severe ankle injury. Dunbar played sporadically and finished the game with 2 solo tackles, 2 assists and 1 pass defended. One thing I like about Dunbar is he plays with a lot of emotion but not in a cocky way. It is easy to see that he is the leader of the BC Defense. Dunbar fills gaps quickly from his LB spot and has plenty of quickness to drop back in coverage. I’m sure he’s quicker when healthy and will make a fine LB in a Cover 2 Defense. GRADE: NEAUTRAL
Andre Callender #32 5' 11.0" 199 4.50 HB 2008: Callender was by far the star of this game. Although he’s not the flashiest running back in college football, he may be the most efficient. Callender finished this game with 22 Rushes for 75 yards and 11 receptions for 92 yards. Callender looked very comfortable catching the ball out of the backfield, whether it is by design or serving as an outlet. Callender certainly made a point to be a late round draft pick or definite UDFA acquisition who could serve well as a 3rd back and ST’s player. Callender has good vision but lacks the speed to hit holes at the next level. Callender does an excellent job of gaining yards after contact and several times sustained drives by his exceptional second effort. GRADE: NEAUTRAL
Jamie Silva #44 5' 11.0" 210 SS 2008: Silva actually looks like a Fullback in BC’s Defensive Backfield. Silva finished this game with 5 solo tackles and 2 assists. Silva actually did a decent job of making plays along the sideline; however, he was fairly unimpressive in run support at the line of scrimmage. Silva looks like a big hitter but his play in this game did not support this character. Silva was also unimpressive in the return game as well and made several fair-catches as a PR that could have actually been returned. GRADE: SLIGHTLY NEGATIVE
GAME INACTIVES:
DeJuan Tribble #27 5' 9.0" 170 CB 2008
College: CLEMSON UNIVERITY Conference: ATLANTIC COAST Columnist: JAY STRICKROTH
SCOUTING SUMMARY:
Barry Richardson 79 6' 7.0" 345 5.30 OT 2008: Richardson looked every bit a NFL Left Tackle is this game. Not once did I see any pressure come from his side and it appeared every time Clemson designed a pass play with a QB roll out, it was to his side. Richardson looked very nimble and engaged defenders well. He also does an excellent job of staying with a defender during running plays. Richardson also gets to the second level well and displays excellent strength. I was quite surprised by how good Richardson’s footwork was because everything I’ve heard was how that was a weakness. Maybe it was this game or how he wasn’t challenged but he seemed to drop back in passing plays with good balance and positioning. GRADE: POSITIVE
Nick Watkins 32 6' 1.3" 220 4.65 LB 2008: Watkins finished this game with 5 solo stops and 6 assists; however, he wasn’t a force for the Tiger defense. Watkins is a fine college LB but I’m not convinced he’ll be able to transition to the next level. Watkins failed to attack the gaps with any authority and a majority of his stops were from behind. GRADE: SLIGHTLY NEGATIVE
C.J. Spiller 28 5’11.0” 190 RB 2010: Spiller again split carries with Junior RB James Davis and didn’t get involved in the offense until late in the second half. Spiller finished the game with 11 carries for 52 yards. Spiller, a former High School sprint champion, again ran with speed that appears better suited for the open field. Spiller doesn’t yet hit holes with authority or his noted speed; however, he looks more comfortable utilizing his speed to attack the perimeters. In the Punt Return game, Spiller wants to run laterally rather than vertically, and he could probably add an additional 7 yards per return if he would immediately run up field. Spiller continued to display his shiftiness in the open field by making several BC Defenders grab nothing but air out in the flats. GRADE: POSITIVE
GAME INACTIVES:
Chris McDuffie 68 6’5.0” 330 OG 2008:
OTHER NOTES/PLAYERS TO WATCH:
BC:
Deleon Gause #9 Freshman CB: 7 solo tackles, 2 assists, 1 TFL. Gause was all over the field making plays. Although he is a not a fundamentally sound tackler at this point, the talent is definitely there. Look for this kid in the future.
Anthony Castonzo #74 Freshman RT: Castonzo is another future stud from O-Line University. Castonzo is 6’7” 276 lbs and although he could add another 40 lbs, this kid will develop and follow a long heritage of NFL Linemen.
CLEMSON:
NONE
