A Day Late and a Dollar short for Kansas…

Well lots to say here in one respect, not much in another. First Half, really it seemed like Missouri was the only team on the field. Kansas not only missed 2 field goals and but had 2 interceptions. Headline for sure, Daniels over Reesing! One played better than the other giving Missouri the edge!

Coaching: Kansas lacked the on field fire that Missouri had. Missouri’s coaching after a weaker first part to the first quarter, found a game plan that worked, mixed it up on Kansas all night and the let the team take care of the rest, no turnovers huge here, but 14 penalties for 141 yards will not cut it against Oklahoma for sure, now the real coaching starts for Missouri, waking their players up after a penalty filled game. Kansas, well they seemed just as lost as the players did in the first half. It appears they had no solid game plan offensive wise to start the game. Figuring out well to late how to get the ball down the field. The entire offensive team looked confused most the first half, as the defense did their best to stop Missouri.

Special Teams: Missouri will not win against Oklahoma giving them such great field position on that weak kick off method. Were they worried Kansas would run one back? Either way weak! This will not work with their next match up. Maclin looked great on returns for Missouri.

Defensive lines: Missouri did well considering a high scoring second half for Kansas. Kansas and their offense was non existent in a sense the first half and they were able to stop them near the red zone for 2 missed field goals. #99 Lorenzo Williams had a great day, pressuring the QB, and stopping the run. McAnderson had a tough time running all night, rarely getting past the front line of Missouri. Kansas, well once the defensive line did break free after Daniels, they did not have a chance, he scrambles well and played solid under the pressure that was there. #93 McClinton of Kansas was a no show again; he is so Slow, he may be better playing on the offensive line.

Linebackers: Kansas Rivera played well, but against the pass the entire Kansas defense was clueless on how to hold coverage. Mortensen of Kansas was lost against the pass. Lots of key 3rd and long plays all seemed to come up in the favor of Missouri on a scramble by Daniels and a toss down the field at the last minute. They marched the ball well down the field, really never stopping once. Missouri punted 2 times! Need I say more here? Missouri handled things a little better, mainly on the run. But on the pass Kansas was able to get things going late.

Secondary: Other than a decent first half by Missouri (Well Kansas handed that to them) neither team did well. The QB’s for each team had a field day against each other. Top prospect Talib had no huge passes thrown over him; Missouri seemed to steer clear of him and did it well. But he still is very inconsistent against the run and coming off blocks. He is not as fierce when it comes to breaking blocks or getting to the ball once the carrier is in his territory.

Offense: Missouri had the edge for sure with their offensive front line. But Kansas really has no defensive line. Kansas, the front line, had some miscues, but held their own against a strong Missouri defensive front. Kansas’ problem with their offense was not their front line, the fact hat they looked lost the first half and had several miscues was their issue. "I didn't feel out of sync," Reesing said. "But every throw you make isn't going to be perfect." Well I agree, but he was out of sync, the entire offense was. Once Reesing woke up, he had a great second half. Daniels looked solid the entire game, fast and a very fierce competitor he stole the show for sure. Scrambled in the pocket well, no major mistakes, and kept his composure the entire game, to me making the main difference. Missouri also ran the ball well, something Kansas could not do. Great day for receivers on both sides of the ball, tons of hustle, no dropped passes worth mentioning, great game on both sides of the ball.

College: Kansas

#3 Aqib Talib 6' 2.0" 193 4.45 CB 2009: Handled in a sense his side of the field well. No huge passes against him, but a few missed tackles, weak pursuit of the ball, and with his speed that shocks me, he seemed flat like the rest of the secondary for sure. He had the moves put on him during an open field tackle that had him going the opposite direction of the receiver, as well as missed another key 3rd down hit allowing a first down. As a top prospect, being a little harder on him, he is a solid draft choice but not a first rounder for sure. I guess though teams will have a hard time passing up on his speed. GRADE: Neutral

#35 Brandon McAnderson 5' 10.0" 235 0.00 FB 2008: No show like the rest of the team in the first half. Poor play choices and a weak start kept him out of most plays most of the game. He looked flat and has really no fire in him at all. GRADE: Negative

#86 Marcus Henry 6' 4.0" 210 0.00 WR 2008: Caught 2 for 17 yards. He was not the go to guy this game. But he is a hard runner after he gets the ball, ran over quite a few on one play to get a 1st down. He plays hard every play and does not stop until the whistle is blown. GRADE: Positive

#85 Derek Fine 6' 3.0" 250 0.00 TE 2008: Caught 3 for 29 yards. Had trouble holding a few blocks but overall played a solid game. He did look a little tired towards the end of the game though. Looked solid, was not effective on special teams. GRADE: Positive

#93 James McClinton 6' 1.0" 285 0.00 DT 2008: Who, this guy is huge and slow, I mean seriously, he is weak. Daniels was not worried about him all night. Even if he did break a block, the blocker had time to run back around him and get back in front of him. Enough said. GRADE: Negative.

#5 Todd Reesing 5' 11.0" 195 0.00 QB 2010: 2 interceptions, 28 for 49 for 349 yards. Out of sync totally in the first half, no fire, looked confused on most of the pay calls, just did not handle things well. He did come out in the second half with fire, the fire I was used to seeing and played well and played to win. It was really nice to see and I enjoyed the second half. His effort was real and solid for sure. Overall he just got outplayed by his competition. When someone else makes no mistakes and you have 2 of them, it will lose you the game. GRADE: Neutral – although very positive in the second half.

College: Missouri

#82 Martin Rucker 6' 5.0" 245 0.00 TE 2008: 5 caught for 40 yards. Solid game for sure, had a touchdown, and caught what was throw to him. Good size, very strong and has solid speed. They have a great TE combo, that has set many school records. As a top pick for sure, this guy has great size and great speed for that size. Rucker has solid hands, good blocking and a team player for sure. Missouri uses their tight ends well. GRADE: Positive

#77 Adam Spieker 6' 2.5" 305 0.00 C 2008: Great game, handled the ball well and had no mistakes there. He also manhandled the defensive line of Kansas with no issues for sure. Adam does not seem to be as on fire and as much of a team leader as some of the top picks out there but he played very well. GRADE: Positive

#45 Chase Coffman 6' 6.0" 230 0.00 TE 2009: The other half of their stellar tight end combo. Solid guy, needs to put on a quite a few pounds to me to be more effective in the NFL, but has great hands and good speed for his position. Had 2 catches for 14 yards and blocked well. GRADE: Positive

#10 Chase Daniel 6' 0.0" 225 4.75 QB 2009: 40 for 49, 360 yards, no mistakes, period! He was on fire and in sync the entire game for sure. Quick when pressured, accurate passes on the run, and did not get ahead of himself or his receivers the entire game. Need I say more. Will be interesting to see how well he does next year. GRADE: Very Positive

#22 Tony Temple 5' 9.0" 200 0.00 HB 2008: 22 rushes for 98 yards, he had huge holes all night, runs well and stays to the hole and behind his blockers. He held onto the ball on a few big hits, and was focused. Pretty good speed, I would not say he is the fastest I have seen, but he was patient and ran well. GRADE: Positive

#2 Will Franklin 6' 2.0" 205 0.00 WR 2008: 5 catches for 32 yards, no dropped passes, solid speed but not a great at breaking tackles and forward momentum after the catch. Less aware of where to go and what’s around him. GRADE: Neutral

#79 Tyler Luellen 6' 7.0" 295 0.00 OT 2008: Solid game for sure. Good size guy, was able to hold most his blocks and played consistently well the entire night. Seen him on quite a few plays not giving up during Daniel’s many scrambles out of the pocket. GRADE: Positive

#99 Lorenzo Williams 6' 1.0" 295 0.00 DT 2008: Great game. Good size here, a little slow for the NFL to me, but was able to beat blockers numerous times and played with the same fire and intensity the entire game. Good QB pressures at times for sure. GRADE: Positive

#3 Darnell Terrell 6' 3.0" 205 0.00 CB 2008: Played well In the first half, had some miscues in the second. Some passes thrown his way, gave up a few big passes, but mirrored the ball well and was in hot pursuit of most plays. Too many struggles though holding his coverage. GRADE: negative.

Fun game to watching the second half, would have been nice to see Kansas hold Missouri a time or 2 more. Maclin looked great on returns, very fast and plays hard.

Kansas just looked out of sync on offense most of the first half while the defense struggled to hang on. This lack of fire surely caused them the game. Missouri, other than tyring to let Kansas win with 14 penalties, made no other mistakes.

Who will win the Oklahoma - Missouri matchup????

Asteinebach
I'm confident that it's going to be the Tigers who win next weeks matchup. Oklahoma has upset written all over it, but this kid Chase Daniel is just too good to go into things unprepared. 40-49 is just downright sick, that's 81% or so passing with 3 TD's. A performence right on par with that of Darren McFadden, who also had himself a day on Friday. I'm starting to wonder why they say that Chase wouldn't be able to get things done on Saturday. He reminds me of Derek Anderson in that sense. I'll be very interested to see where he goes come draft day, my guess is round 2.

Who will win the Oklahoma - Missouri matchup????

Nice writeup, Kevin...I have to go with Missouri. I predicted before the season began that this was a team to watch out for this year as a potential BCS Championship Game contender, and I'm not deserting the boat now!
bcdrama
Very solid but I have a few questions about the mesurables on a few prospects: KU
Reesing is not 5'11" and 5'10" might be a stretching it Chase Daniels is jus over 5'11"! wink.gif
Talib is a big corner but there are concerns about his speed, 4.45 seems a little unrealistic, he is likely in the low 4.5s. Henry is about a 4.6 guy but I think that like Wilford he will be a good big bodied possession receiver, note to the Steelers, [something you have lacked since Plaxico departed!] I like Fine more than you did, he reminded me of a shorter Ben Hartsock could be a decent #2 TE soon.
MU-
Coffman is 6'5 and a half" and 243, he needs to get stronger but he hasn't been 230 since Spring of 2006. Maclin's only a RS Freshman but he is a taller Harvin 4.38 speed, moves vision and he and KU's Herford, the reason Mizzou was afraid of a return might be future superstars. What did you think of Witherspoon? I think he might eventually be the best pro of either teams defenders except possible Talib. wink.gif

I had predicted big things for the Big 12 North, but I thought KSU and Mizzou would by fighting for #1 with KU battling NU for #3. I thought WVU would be the BCS champ back in the Pre-Season, I'd love to see Missouri face the Mountaineers for the crown!
jwest
I'm happy to hear that Reesing didn't sulk after a poor first half. Being able to come out and turn things around in the second half is a huge plus. Was it just a case of youth and inexperience leading to the mistakes in the first half?
