Alex Smith #1 overpick. The 05 draft has the worse top 10 draft i have seen up to date. With Alex Smith, Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, Carnel Williams, Pacman Jones, Troy Williamson, Antrelle Rolle, Mike Williams. All serious underachievers. Alex Smith with only 2td and 4td 916 yards and a 57.6 rating this is by far is worst year. In what was supposed to be a up year for the Niners and Smith has been another embarssing season. Smith has played 32 games throwing only 19 td and 31 int he has a horrible 146.2 yard/game career. He has only played half the games this season. It is looking very obvious to both Niner fans and Niner staff that Smith will never live up to the #1 pick.
Which brings a question. Should the Niners trade him? Obviously they would never get a #1 pick back but they would get something in return for a player who has done so horrible throught his career. Trading Smith also frees up valuable cap space. They could try to make offseason moves with his money. Smith is signed to a 6 year 49.5 million dollers. In what is his 3rd year they could trade him to teams who are in desperate need of a QB and would pay more then what he is actually worth. Bears, Falcons, Vikings, Ravens, Panthers, Jaguars, Dolphins, Jets, Bucs all could be potential hot spots to trade Smith to.
Reality is Smith is not going to ever be a pro bowler in his career. They will not improve while hin under center. They might as well trade him now and get something for him, then keep him until his contract expires realising him and paying him on that money. The smart choice would be to trade him. They probably wont be in a position to get the top 3 Qb this draft. But they could hold on to Dilfer 1 more year and maybe add a Qb like McNabb this season. Trade for another Qb. The posibilities are endless. But 1st thing is 1st trade Smith then move forward.

He could still improve.
I just remember when the news first broke that he was entering the draft and everyone automatically thought he was a 2nd-3rd rounder.
Then all of the sudden people started saying top ten and I was like WHAT??? lol.
I love that he's in Seattle's division....

But how much could he improve? His career stats are horrible. This year was supposed to be his break out year after a sub par season. This is a horrible season for any Qb. the 3rd year is the year most Qb breakout and show you if they have potential. And he has shown the complete oppisite.

Remember Drew Brees?
The problem Alex Smith is he lacks all the necessary skill sets to be a good QB (ability to read defenses, quick release, touch and pocket awareness). The strengths he does possess are all overrated when applied to the QB position (strong arm, straight line speed, height). These are lessons told to us by the Great Bill Walsh when he drafted Joe and pushed for Jeff Garcia.......

Drew Brees played with Antonio Gates LT. And now plays with Colsten and Reggie Bush. He has always played in great offenses.

Yes, he did play with LT and Gates. However, who was to foresee Colsten being as good as he is? And really, what has Bush accomplished. Prior to Brees, the Saints had Joe Horn in his prime, and the QB then did nothing. Also, Brees is the offense in NO right now. As far as Smith is concerned, it's just too bad he didn't have more time to work with Norv Turner. He had a decent year and showed promise last year, while Norv was there. If I were SF, I think I'd find me another QB coach/OC who can further what Norv started. Smith may not become a truly great QB, but he does have the potential to be a better than average QB, under the right circumstances.

Yea Norv leaving really killed him. He would have done a much netter job with him. The Niners dont have the weapons for Smith and Smith doesnt look like he can create plays for him self. Some Blame falls on the Niner offense but Smith has been injury prone this season which is another new knock on him.
And Reggie Bush has done alot for this team. He stretches the defense whether they play him alot or not. Defensive coordinaters always plan a game plan around him. With him in the field they have another WR. With him and Deuce both healthy they can go far. Bush was the runner up for Offenseive ROY last year in my eyes. This has been a down year for him but he is still averging 5.7 Yards a carry. Thats not bad.

The niners were rebuilding really well but i knew smith would bite them in the butt. this guy should never have been the number one pick. He is a player that if he was going to be successfull needed to be completely broken down and rebuilt as a player and the niners didn't do that. to me they might need to retool the offense around him kinda spread like if they do trade i don't think there is that much value left in him outside of a 3rd pick then instead of getting the player they really need this year they have to draft a QB higher than called for repeating an old mistake. Smith has flashes of brilliance every now and then and you have to remember the niners are really bad they need WRs and fast i think if they get two quality WR they'll be okay. its like the WR corps never recovered after that rashaun woods fiasco.

I don't know that he was worth the 1st overall pick either, but I do know he graduated from college in 3 years in a difficult program, so one thing is certain, he's smart, and that to me is one of the most important attributes a QB in the NFL needs. All I have to do, as a Charger's fan, is point to one Ryan Leaf. All the talent in the world you're looking for from a QB, but nothing between the ears. With Smith, you need an OC or HC who understands how to build an offense, and how to take advantage of the strengths of his players, and not put them into situations that expose their weaknesses. You don't need the greatest arm to become a great NFL QB, just look at Dan Fouts. But, you do need a brain, and Smith possesses one. You can build a team around him, you just need someone who can put in an offensive package that takes advantage of the things he does well...and you need a HC who does not make his problems public. I'm really surprised Nolan's still there, personally.

Most thought Nolan was doin great after that 7-9 season. Smith is smart but he seems kind of slow on the field. He doesnt read the plays great and does not need to get the ball out of there on time. It was the system that Alex Smith played in Utah that made him so great and made him so bad in the NFL. I say keep Smith because your not going to get much for him. Get a Veteran QB to help teach him te simple ways of being a QB. Smith never had that father QB his rookie season. After a cuple of games he was just thrown in there. It backfired big time. With Smith your going to have alot of patience now since you should have groomed him his 1st couple of years. They wasted 3 years of his career and now have no choice but to sit him down that he is injuered and playing so awful. I say get a solid vet QB sit down Smith for half a season next year.

Smith has shown little promise and it doesnt look good for the Niners. They need to improve the D-line Secondary WR QB. O line has some soft spots but will need to be on hold because of other pressing needs. How much will A team give for Smith? McNabb will probably stay in Philly for another year.

I agree with you 100%. Im a die-hard 49ers fan and I don't believe Alex Smith is the guy 4 us. He will never be a Pro Bowler as u stated and I just think his play this year let alot of Niner fans down. We had playoff aspirations and we kinda took a step back with a 5-11 season. Thats not dismal, but his 2 TD's and 4 INT's were. I would love to see Shaun Hill get a shot at the job this season. I also would love to see Alex Smith get one more shot if he cant do it this year he should be traded

It's my understanding, from what I've read, that it's not just a "thing" between Nolan and Smith...it's between Nolan and the WHOLE team. This is a coach that should have been shown the door, IMO. He has no respect from his players, so I'm afraid next year will be no better than this year, and perhaps worse. Unfortunately, it's not as easy to show the owners the door, because the 49ers may have the biggest joke of ownership in the entire NFL, in the Yorks. I think Smith could be a quality QB, but not under the current coaching stafff.
