New Mexico showed a great ability to score and play team defense as they shut out freshman wonderkid QB Colin Kaepernick and the Pistol Offense. New Mexico got up early and had control of the game the whole way.

Ezra Butler 56 6'2.0" 248 4.60(E) LB 2008
This guy gets a lot of hype and some scouts really like him. I'm unimpressed. Hype has him being a 3rd rounder or so, I think he plays more like a 7th rounder. Has a tendency to disappear and needs to be more active. Had a few tackles and plays, but I'd expect a little more. Should have been more of a factor in the run game as the defense got shredded by NM. Grade: Slightly negative.

Matt Hines 57 6'1.0" 285 NT 5.15(E) 2008
A NT who shows ability to plug holes and is fairly active. Blocked a FG. Another one of these guys who is a very good college player, but probably undersized and doesn't have enough for the next level. Grade: Neutral

Adam Bishop 88 6'4.0" 245 4.75E TE 2008
Big TE who is a block first type of guy. Did not catch a pass. Is used much like a FB at times as he is put into motion and then hits the hole first and the RB follows. Had a few good blocks. Would struggle as an in line blocker at the next level but, is good in space at hitting a moving target. Specialty is the red zone and NV wasn't able to use him in that capacity this game. Grade: Slightly Positive.

College: New Mexico Conference:Mtn. West Columnist:Jay Strickroth
Name # Ht Wt Speed Pos Class Game Note
Cody Kase 47 6'1.0" 216 LB 2008
An active middle linebacker in the 3-4. Is effective on the blitz and is able to come free and get pressure on the QB. Looks to be a good college LB and nothing more. Very undersized for the next level. Grade: Neutral

Travis Brown 81 6'2.0" 202 4.55 WR 2008
Nice big target with good hands who can get separation. Finished the day 7-120 and a TD. Got stripped of the ball on a 22 yard catch. Split the DBs on his TD reception. Tough WR who will fight for YAC. Grade: Positive

DeAndre Wright 2 5'10.5" 193 4.50 CB 2010
Good coverage all evening. Gave up nothing of note. Looks to be a nice young player to keep our eye on. Did a good job on a 3rd down keeping the receiver in front of the sticks. Grade: Positive

Glover Quin 19 6'0.0" 203 4.49 CB 2009
Another CB who had good coverage all evening. Gave up very little and will be watched closely next year. Grade: Positive

Rodney Fergusen 21 5'11.4" 229 4.54 HB 2009
DNP Academics

Vince Natali 66 6'1.8" 309 5.17 C 2008
Nice college center who looks to get out in space and the 2nd level to make a block. Looks to be a little short and doesn't seem to have the quicks for the next level. Grade: Neutral

Tyler Donaldson 55 6'3.5" 228 4.70 DE 2008
An undersized DE who would have to move to LB for the next level. Can string down the line and make the ball carrier cut one way or another. Gets into the backfield and had pressure several times. Grade: Slightly Positive

Marcus Smith 4 6'1.2" 214 4.48 WR 2008
Before you could even get settled into watch this game Smith had caught a TD on a crossing route. Works the zone coverage and finds the soft spot. Had a drop. Got snuffed on an end around at the goal line. Finished the evening 5-86 and one TD. Grade: Slightly Positive

Game Notes- Paul Baker RB NM was the player of the game. He had 167 yards on 22 carries. This was his first start filling in for Rodney Fergusen. He may get the job permanently if Fergusen can't make grades...Donovan Porterie QB NM was 20-36 354 yards 2 TDs and 1 INT. He's definitely worth paying attention to next year and seems to have all the tools you'd want....Colin Kaepernick was 13-31 for 137 and no TDs or INTs. For the first time he really looked like a FR. He'd been tearing apart the WAC....Marko Mitchell WR was 6-96 yards, but they were quiet yards not big plays... Marko Mitchell and RB Luke Lipincott are NV JRs who I'll put into the system and scout heavily next year.

Do you like Smith or Brown better, Brett? They seem pretty close, to me.

Same with Quin and Wright.

Can Donaldson move to OLB and still be an effective pass rusher?

I like Smith better, a little more physical. Donaldson is probably just a camp guy if that. His best situation would to probably make a practice squad and learn how to play OLB and go from there. Based on this game I like Wright better, but I need to see more of him.

congrats to the Lobos on their first bowl victory sine '61! I watched the end of this game and the fans looked so happy, haha I can only imagine. When I used to be the writer for the MWC, New Mexico almost always had the most talent in the league, congrats to them on the big victory.

This was supposed to be a close game, as the line was NM -2. Kaepernick looked terrible in that game.
