I've noticed a distinct lack of activity in this discussion forum and I'm hoping to get some activity started.

The Cardinals are a young team in a winnable division with new coach that I have a lot of respect for. I know this organization has had some problems in the past but I'm hoping they can get those issues straightened and build on this year.

With that in mind, what do you think the Cards need to address in the draft?

They protected the quarterback and stopped the run but gave up to many points in the passing game and couldn't move the ball on the ground.

I think they need to add a good cover corner or a safety in the draft. They also need to give Russ Grimm another year with the line to see if they can develop some run blocking. They could use a back as well but I think the biggest need is in the defensive secondary.

Sorry this is light on analysis. I'll have more compelling smile.gif stats and analysis in the future.

Welcome to the site!!

Glad to have a Cardinals fan on board...

I think you need a pass-rusher like Derrick Harvey.

Secondary, as you pointed out, could also be a need.

Perhaps a young HB to take some carries away from old Edge.

And depth, depth, depth.

The key to your team is keeping your AWESOME WR's healthy and the development of your O-Line and Matt Leinart.

The Cardinals are the new Ya but team.

They need pass rushing help. I dont think Linehart will pan out either.
But most of all they need a shut down corrner.
Rolle is nice but he should be a s. He is an ok #2 corrner.

I totally agree on the DE. They have 3 young DTs, in Dockett, Watson, and Branch. The LDE, Smith actually did quite well this year, is young, and has nice size. A pass rusher across from him, and perhaps another chosen later could set the DL up for a few years. It would also take some much needed pressure off the secondary, because it doesn't matter how good your DBs are if the opposing QB has all day to throw. I believe Dansby is a FA, so signing him is paramount to keeping a pretty decent LB corps together. Hood doesn't look too bad, and Rolle might be suited for FS, although I don't know how he'd adjust. A RCB is a need, as is a backup to Dansby, assuming you sign him. I think a lot of teams will be looking at him, so that may be tough. If you don't re-sign him, you'll need another LB. gpngc is right, when he says you need a young RB, and I would expect one to be drafted or bought in FA. If the right LT dropped in the draft to you, I think that would be hard to pass up even with the need at DE and CB, which are the two positions I expect them to choose from the available draftees when they make their selection.

Great ideas so far. It seems that everyone thinks the Cards will look at a pass rusher first. I agree that it will probably be a defensive player. It certainly can't hurt there coverage if they can get to the QB faster. It will be an interesting off season for them and I hope your wrong about Leinart. It would be nice to not have to worry about QB for a couple of years. They need to give him another shot. They need a running back that can break tackles and take some pressure off of Leinart so he can get the ball to those spectacular young receivers. I was a Fitzgerald fan when I was able to watch him in college and that pulled me into the Cardinal world. smile.gif

Fitzgerald has always been one of my favorite players in the league.

I think if the right offensive scheme is put in place, Leinart can be a very successful NFL QB. In college, he completely reminded me of Kenny Stabler, IMO, one of the very best, who also had a rag arm. He was deadly though, in the short to middle patterns, and threw and completed just enough deep passes to keep a defense honest. You don't need a canon arm to be a great QB. IMO, leadership, reading a D, and pocket awareness are the most important attributes a QB needs to have.

I see them getting a Pass rush DE like Harvey or Campbell... Get a CB in the 2nd. A RB in the 3rd. O-line in the 4th. D-Line in 5th LB in 6th BPA in 7th. I dont know if they have all their original picks but those are the picks i would get in that order.

When I started this thread I was thinking the cards should go after a CB with their first pick. There seems to be a lot of depth at CB in the draft this year so I think I'm leaning towards pass rushing DE and look for secondary help in the second round. I think that really depends on who is left on once their pick comes up. There may only be one CB off the board by the time they pick.

Their is alot of quailty depth at both RB and CB.

The Cardinals have received permission to talk to Tampa's running backs coach Art Valero for their OL coaching position.
PackersPwnage
The Cards need a shutdown CB first. Then they need another DE opposite to Berry, who's getting old. After that, u should get a backup RB.
Here's some ideas:
CB-Try to go out and sign someone like Trufant or Samuel. U not only need a good CB, but a shutdown CB, since you'll probably be moving Rolle to FS. If not, draft someone like McKelvin, Tribble, or Flowers in the 2nd.
DE-Here's where u use your 1st rounder. Get someone like Harvey, Campbell, or Jackson, who can all start for ur team for a long time.
RB-Use a 3rd/4th rounder here on someone like Forsett, Hart, Patrick, or Choice. Don't really need a workhorse here, just someone to take some of the burden off of Edge.

With the signing of Fitzgerald, and the fallout that will surely come from Boldin and others, do you think the Cards open up talks with Philly for Boldin? They could resign Bryant for a lot less than it will take for Boldin, and gain some draft picks. Meanwhile, Philly gets the WR they need. Other teams that might be interested in Boldin might include Tampa, Washington, 49ers, and Carolina (they may be close to getting Hackett) among others.

I would be sad to see Boldin go. I think they can hang onto him this year. It would be nice to keep both him and Fitz but two great receivers in Wisenhunts offense might be a luxury they can't afford. I think it depends on who they pick in the first round.

I like the new look of the site and the fact that I can finally get in using firefox. I couldn't get on the site in any meaningful way for awhile there.

I don't know what your problem was...must have been a setting in your software, firewall, or something else, because I've been using Firefox for about 2 years with no problems...can't say the same about my cell phone though:(

Wow! Does anyone still use this site for the Cardinals as it seems pretty long since anyone has posted. OK here is my opinions on the Cardinals. In the 2009 NFL Draft they need a RB, OL, and defense. The only 1st round RBs worth the money and pick is Moreno and Wells and I am afraid that they are going to teams like Cleveland or Denver before ARI can select them. So that leaves people wanting to secure up the OLine but the OT, G, and C picks that are left are not worthy of taking this high again for the money and pick. I know people would argue and say someone like Alex Mack at C but there are enough big Centers to wait for the later rounds. So that leaves the defense to look at. They have no pass rush and low sack rating at DE. Or the OLBs give up too much on the ground and can't blitz or rush the offense of other teams. So they will end up taking a DE like George Selvie from South Florida or a OLB like Sean Weatherspoon from Missouri or Gerald McRath from Southern Miss if he declares. Then in the 2nd round try to pick up a talented back like LeSean McCoy from Pittsburgh, Donald Brown from Connecticut or Javon Ringer from Michigan State. Then in the 3rd and 4th rounds I see them getting a OT like Sam Young from Notre Dame or C like Eric Wood from Louisville. Then fill out the rest of the defense or special teams needs with the rest of the draft. Of course this is all without them trading anyone for other picks or knowing who they will cut after the season. Thank you for reading this.

Thanks for posting in a dead forum! Hope to see you on the boards more and welcome to the site. Good insight!

Don Brown is coming back to UCONN.... Welcome!

I wouldnt count out Moreno though. there arent too many teams that need RBs. I think Clay Matthews of USC should also be at a 3-4 OLB in the 2nd
kj197728
I still think that Moreno or Wells are going to other teams. I would bet that Cleveland, San Diego, Denver or Cincinnati take them before Arizona. If one does end up going to Arizona I hope it is Chris Wells. But the other teams I think will take a great back even though they need other positions before the RB. Arizona has the system to plug a RB in if they get the left side of their line built up. Gandy and Sendlein certainly need to be replaced with free agents or draft picks to make holes for RB to get through. I still think Center on OLine or defense at LB or DE for the first round pick. Then pick up a better back like Arian Foster, Devin Moore or James Davis in the 3rd to 5th round. Still talented enough to make it in the NFL if their OLine improves. Thanks.

Mike Gandy is one of the most underrated LTs in the league. Hes been a nice surprise for them and has been protecting kurt's ass all year....
kj197728
Are you kidding? Gandy is horrible. All he knows is how to pass block but he can't push the defense around to make holes for the running backs. He will be gone with a draft pick or moving Brandon Keith in at left tackle. The right side is great with Lutui and Brown. The Cardinals will replace Gandy, Sendlein, and maybe Wells off of the left side and center. They need to open up the running game. The Cardinals can't stay as a passing team with being last in the league in running. No 1000 yard rushers at all and no running game is exposing them and the last games they have played show this. Next year they need to change even more. They need to trade some players and cut others to make them a double threat team. Staying as a passing team they will not make it. Making some cuts and trades will make them go backwards a bit but it will end up moving them even more forward. I believe it will be a big year next year if they do the right things. There are a couple of moves like trading Boldin and moving in Leinart next year that will work. If you know about football this has to be done for them to succeed. Thanks.

I said he's been protecting Kurts ass... Not making holes. I shoulda said underated pass blockers int he league. Chill

if we're talking pass rush than two names come to my mind
Clint Sintim and Micheal Johnson both of these guys are extremely athletic and will make their presence felt

if the Front Office chooses to go with a RB in the first round, depending on Moreno's pro day i can see him in a cards uni come this 09-10 season and if Moreno and Wells are both gone before the Cards pick than i can see them taking Donald Brown inn the 2nd

I would love to see Sintim in AZ.

What are everyone's thoughts on McCoy? At the start of the year I was interested in what he would do but he didn't look good at times this year. He's listed as the Birds choice in the CDS mock draft but I would hope they would go for a position of greater need since there seems to be quite a bit of depth at the RB position.
