If it's possible for a HOF guy to be underrated, Upshaw was, I as sorry for those too young to remember him, he along with John Hannah, Larry Little, Anthony Munoz, Jimbo Covert, Randall McDaniel, Art Shell, Mike Webster, Jackie Slater, Dan Dierdorf, Jim Otto, Dermontti Dawson, Russ Grimm, Ron Yary, Larry Allen, Bruce Matthews, Mike Munchak, Joe DeLamielleure, Gary Zimmerman, Conrad Dobler snf Jim Langer IMHO are the best 20 Offensive Linemen of the past 40 years in other words all players I have seen with my own eyes and Upshaw played between 255 and 267 and was an just a shade under 6'5" yet he was probably one of the top 10 fastest players on those Classic Raiders teams of the 60's and 70's I remember Marv Hubbard had trouble keeping up with him on sweeps and he was in top 5-10 passblockers in the game's history, that unit gave up 14 sacks in a 100+ game stretch!! Upshaw was the best athlete of the three HOF members on that line and that was a top 3-5 unit in the history of the game!!!

If you want to teach an athletic, young lineman how to be a completely dominant force show him lots of Gene Upshaw.

NFLPA Executive Director Gene Upshaw has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 63. As well as being remembered for his role at the NFLPA, Upshaw will be remembered as a Hall of Fame offensive lineman.
On behalf of all at CDS, I would like to extend all our condolences to all those close to Upshaw.
