UNC had a perfect game plan for countering Miami's speedy youth movement...Run right at that speed. And, they executed to perfection at Miami without their starting QB T.J. Yates. Backup Cameron Sexton played extremely well for the Heels who improved to 3-1 on the season and made themselves suddenly into ACC title contenders. This is a very physical Tar Heels team, and it starts with a stellar defensive line loaded with guys who have NFL potential (just not for this draft.) Seriously, there are a couple guys who are future NFL stars on that UNC defensive line in Sophomore Marvin Austin (6'3", 305) and #91 T. Powell. The Heels also have a back--#8 Greg Little--who runs downhill harder than any back I have scouted so far this year. Miami is platooning two freshmen QB, starting with #9 Robert Marve, and they both show long term promise, as does their cast of sophomore and freshman skill players led by QB Jacory Harris, and RB Graig Cooper, but they just haven't quite grown up yet. In this game, experience trumped talent....pure & simple.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: North Carolina Conference: Atlantic Coast Columnist: Jeff West

Game Notes
Brooks Foster 1 6' 2.0" 205 4.53 WR 2009: He was barely seen today, as the rookie QB was not in passing mode, and the UNC team was in grind it mode. The one ball I remember being thrown his way was when he slipped and fell and came nowhere near making the grab. Had a nice ST tackle though. GRADE: Incomplete

Calvin Darity 79 6' 2.0" 310 5.25 OG 2009: Wow. This guy got my attention. A road grader. Good short area mauler. Not real nimble backpedaling in pass pro. Quick feet in limited areas, and moves quickly in that area. Quick for his size and run blocks hard. On one UNC TD, there was a huge scrum at the 5 on the play, and Darity literally pushed the pile into the endzone. If I am an NFL team in need of a run blocker at ROG, Darity would have to be a guy I'd consider. GRADE: Positive

Marvin Austin 9 6' 2.5" 305 5.00 DT 2011: This guy has future all-pro potential stamped on him already. Even looks capable of playing 3-4 DE. Plenty of time to scout and write about this guy. But he is GOOD...though #91 T. Powell may be just as good.

Trimane Goddard 31 5' 10.6" 195 4.55 S 2009: I love this kid's game. He is everywhere. Solid in both run support and will not hurt you positioned at SS in your pass defense schemes. Smart. Solid hitter. Film junky who shows up prepared. Even on plays where he lines up deep he shows the speed and anticipation to come up and make plays in the running game. Athletic with good enough size. Can be run over occasionally, because he's not huge, but he makes my roster if I bring him in. Just a football player. Looks like a 2nd round talent in a 5th round body. Can miss a tackle here and there. GRADE: Very positive

Brandon Tate 87 6' 0.0" 195 4.50 WR 2009: Ooo...this kid is bottled explosion. He is one of the nation's premier kick returners, and shows deadly YAC as a receiver. Didn't get as many opportunities in this game due to a variety of obvious factors, but did the most with every opportunity. Snatches and goes. No wasted steps. Understands lanes and running angles after the catch. Top 100 verge guy. GRADE: Positive

Richard Quinn 89 6' 3.2" 262 4.75 TE 2009: Gets off the line quickly. Gets low and cradles the ball. Chiseled. Solid run blocker. Didn't really evaluate him enough though...GRADE: Incomplete

College: Miami (FL) Conference: Atlantic Coast Columnist: Jeff West

Game Notes
Javarris James 5 5' 11.0" 214 4.50 HB 2010: Where was he, Jeff? Is he still on this team? DNP.

Anthony Reddick 26 5' 11.5" 197 0.00 S 2009: Quiet day for Anthony who seems to be playing more CF this year, and this was not a day to be evaluated as a pass defending safety. Showed good goal line run support, and was in on a few tackles, but that was about it. Not enough to evaluate because of UNC's lack of passing. GRADE: Incomplete

DajLeon Farr 10 6' 5.0" 250 4.83 TE 2009: Didn't see him. Even on 2 TE sets, it was Richard Gordon (#84) and #88 in the game.

Bruce Johnson 22 5' 10.3" 176 4.50 CB 2009: see Reddicks write up, above. Barely visible in this one, and is not asked (apparently) to be involved in run support. GRADE: Incomplete

Chaz Washington 75 6' 3.0" 310 5.01 DT 2011: Kept looking for him in the D-line rotation, but didn't see him.

Eric Moncur 94 6' 1.3" 250 4.70 DE 2009: A studly beast. Fast. Muscled up. Announcers raved about his sack during which he was totally unblocked. You can see the talent, but he honestly didn't get that much done with it in this game. UNC ran right at the center of the line, and so he didn't get that many opportunities to make plays. On passing plays, he was generally near the QB but was not as disruptive as you might have expected given his gifts. He'll be drafted, I just couldn't tell where based on today's performance. GRADE: Neutral

Spencer Adkins 48 5' 10.0" 246 4.68 LB 2009: DNS. Not sure he even played.

Darryl Sharpton 50 5' 10.1" 235 4.67 LB 2010: Yea, he started and played, and made a few plays in the running game, but I wouldn't hold the presses or anything. Good line backer, in the literal sense of those words. Really gives nice support to the run-stuffers up front. RB Greg Little just showed him up today a couple of times. Covers a lot of ground from his OLB slot. Solid in short yardage situations. GRADE: Neutral

Lovon Ponder 35 5' 11.0" 219 4.60 S 2009: DNS, Did not see him.

Dwayne Hendricks 93 6' 2.8" 300 5.16 DT 2009: Had to add this kid to the database, Jeff. He is nearly as good as the two UNC D-linemen I've been raving about. Got to love the pro size and size potential. Fights through the double team. Keeps coming at you. Some speed chasing down the line and to the sidelines. A big movable object. Gets low and frequently wins. If he's not a late draft pick, I'd have a guy on the phone with his number in hand as the draft ends FOR SURE. GRADE: Positive

Glenn Cook 3 5' 11.3" 228 4.65 LB 2009: Quick MLB who is a solid tackler, and also warranted database inclusion. Lateral movement skills appear exceptional. Very good in pass defense for a MIKE. Good at the POA despite size. Not much not to like here except 228 pounds. GRADE: Positive

OTHER NOTES:

UNC: Keep an eye on underclass DL Tydric (sp?) Powell #91. He's a star in the making, no doubt about that!

RB Greg Little (#8) is a downhill thumper. Don't know if he has the wheels, but he punishes tacklers. Reminds me of Greg Jones.

UNC's Freshman backup (normally 3rd string) QB Mike Paulus is (yes) from that Paulus family. He's 6'4", 215 and looks like he could be starting in a couple years and be a future draftee.

Junior CB Jordan Hemby is a superior run-support corner. Looks like a SS playing corner. Was not tested much in pass defense, but definitely a guy to keep an eye on for the 2010 draft.

MIAMI: This team is loaded with babies who are playing a ton. Both QBs are oozing talent, and they complement each other's styles. Not sure if long term platooning is the secret to success, but they can both play.

RB Graig Cooper may wind up being the player from this game who is drafted the highest. Has future top 10-type potential. Great open field moves and anticipation. Not the most powerful runner, YET.

WR Ladarious Thomas (sp?) is another young stud to remember.

Javarris James is expected to miss anywhere from two to four weeks after suffering a high ankle sprain in the first half against Florida.

In 1-3 years these will be teams that nobady will want anypart of. Davis is back in his element and don't be shocked if he beats the 'U' to some top talent in S.FL. Litte has been timed between 4.55 and 4.64 from what I hear and is 6'2.6" 216 with a frame that is still filling out. Some who saw his in HS saw that SS is actually his best position. Austin is the 1st of the "Baby Sapp's" I have sen who could be as good as the original!! The UNC WR corp is, as I stated previously, perhaps the most underrated in D-1. Goddard is a PUDFA-6th round guy who will make a squad for special teams but like Dawan Landry at the 1st chance he'll grab a job at either S spot and not let it go for years to come. I think Tate is a bigger faster Bobby Wade and anytime mid 4th on he's a steal. Jacksonville could use him.

UM is on the right track if the give Shannon time they'll win. The do still need a QB, they should try to arrange a trade with USC, one of SC's reserves for some line depth! Cook, Cooper, Hendricks and Moncur will be drafted. Who else did you think will be?

I'm willing to bet all the UNC guys will be drafted some day except for Quinn.
