The Detroit Lions completed the trade of Roy Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for multiple draft picks.

What do you think of the deal?

Draft picks are: 1st, 3rd, and 6th round picks

3 picks for a free agent? No disrespect to the Cowboys but they could have got this guy for free in just a few months time. And bear in mind that Williams doesn't have to sign a new contract with the Cowboys, so they COULD be giving up that huge amount to effectively rent Williams until the end of this season.

On the other hand however, the Cowboys main need in the 2009 draft would have been WR in my view and they would likely have spent a 1st rounder to get the guy they wanted. Heck, they may have used these picks to move up if the one they wanted was going to go early, so at least they're getting a proven commodity in that sense.

The Cowboys are trying to make an extension before the deal is "official".

PS- The trade also includes a 2009 7th rounder i think.

The Cowboys signed Roy Williams to a five year extension so he won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

He hasn't signed yet, but tomorrow is what the reports say. I think it's best for everyone. Roy wasn't getting the respect he deserved across from Calvin Johnson, and he's such a competitor, he'll be happier with a winning football team.

On the same token, the Lions needed to expand their draft options, and I can't remember the last time they had 2 firsts going into the draft. Except, of course, for the year that they drafted Roy (2004).

Good move for Det. First and third are a good value for RW and they moved up to the 6th round instead of the 7th. They have to start looking towards rebuilding again and RW was going to leave anyway.

Absolutely. The last thing a struggling team needs is a Franchise tag controversy. These picks will allow Detroit to make some real moves in 2009. It's certainly going to be the most important draft to me in the last 10 years or so.
