The UNI Dome is always a tough place to play, but the Colonels of Nicholls State took their triple offense into this game and found themselves tied 14-14 at the midway point of the third quarter before they began to fumble (literally) the game away. UNI has about 14 players in the pros, and there are another 2-3 coming...Nicholls has Lardarius Webb...

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Nicholls State Conference: Southland Columnist: Bill Carroll
Name # Ht Wt Speed Pos Class Game Notes

Lardarius Webb 20 5' 9.5" 205 4.45 S 2009: They avoided him like the plague, and he let a WR get behind him for a TD pass early, but he showed on one play what he is all about. He came flying across the field to make a pick going up high in front of the receiver. Range. Ups. Hands. Saw the talent on that play, but didn't see enough on this tape for a really good feel. Solid tackler, but was dinged up on a mano-a-mano situation in the 3rd quarter and did not return. Smallish. GRADE: Neutral

Chris Noble 85 6' 3.2" 245 4.80 DE 2009: Decent run stopper. Sets the edge OK for a smallish DE. Not explosive off the snap. Doesn't fight. Looks 4.9ish. GRADE: Slightly negative

Vincent Montgomery 9 5' 11.4" 185 4.66 QB 2009: Pure runner who has become adept at the triple option. Ball security issues in the second half cost his team the game though. Decnet runner. Decent short crossing routes. Not much else to write home about here....GRADE: neutral

Patrick Gordon 15 6' 5.2" 220 4.65 WR 2009: Todd-Blythe like WR. Alabama transfer who had three big catches with nice YAC and YAC moves, but two of them were called back. Sneaky fast. Can make people miss despite his angularness. Oustanding adjustments to the ball. If he's sub 4.6, he'll get a camp look. GRADE: Positive

College: Northern Iowa Conference: Gateway Columnist: Erik Sandelin
Name # Ht Wt Speed Pos Class Game Notes

Corey Lewis 1 6' 1.0" 192 4.60 HB 2009: I put this tape in because I wanted to see Webb and Lewis and both of them got hurt and had very sub par performances. Even before Lewis went out with the injury I was noting his lean look...the fact that he looks more like a Pat-White style QB or WR than a RB, the upright running style, etc.. And sure enough, BOOM, he gets taken out. Looks faster than 4.60. Gets off fast and to full speed soon. Slasher. Can not play like this at the next level. Saw he came back the next week, and on the season is averaging 5.1 ypc. Can catch a little. Not going to be drafted as a RB, or as anything else (unless he runs 4.4s). GRADE: Neutral

Johnny Gray 4 5' 8.0" 185 4.65 WR 2009: The kind of guy who will be a better pro than college player. Outstanding change of direction. Good hands. Small, but uses it to his advantage. Very good punt returner. Has got to be faster than 4.65. Looks 4.50 out there to me, but maybe it's just the quickness I am seeing...Blown up on one play but held on. May be a tad fragile. Could really flourish on special teams. GRADE: Positive

De'Veon Harris 15 6' 1.0" 215 4.60 LB 2009: Eh...good college LB. GRADE: Slightly negative

Darrell Lloyd 23 6' 0.0" 191 4.50 CB 2009: Run support corner who actually leads the team in tackles. Doesn't do much in pass defense, and that's kind of important to have on your resume if you want to play beyond college. Human missile. Nothing here to make me thing he can blow up pro backs and receivers the same way though. GRADE: negative

Mark Huygens 96 6' 6.0" 265 5.10 DT 2009: More highly touted of UNI's tall DTs, but not the better PP. Plays hard. Diagnoses poorly and was constantly tackling the wrong guy in the triple option and leaving his lane open as a result. Gets cut and washed. Size potential is there, and so is the effort. Worth a camp look. GRADE: Slightly positive

Everette Pedescleaux 95 6' 6.0" 305 4.90 DT 2009: Another CDS "find." A poor man's Richard Seymour who has gotten no ink, YET. Has the size you want. Lumbers down the line but lays out for the tackle and closes quicker than you might think. Needs to keep feet under him better, but does protect his legs from the chop pretty well. Rotated, and/but gives good effort on every snap he's in there. Quick up and off for his height and bulk. Walks o-linemen back (but these were 275-pound average Southland linemen.) Raw, but definitely has some talent. Looks like he could go 325 and still play this position. Definitely a coveted 3-4 DE candidate. GRADE: Very Positive

OTHER NOTES:

Nicholls: Little S., LB Andrew Eddie (#25, 6'0", 215) is a darned good football player. But where do you play him? Far and away the most impressive defensive player for Nichols in this game.

Junior running back Marlon Meeks (#32, 5'7", 210) is interesting.

Nicholls rotated in Sr. QB Chris Bunch (#7, 6'3", 190) who is an even better runner than Montgomery, but also more of a single threat than even Montgomery. Both these QBs need to look north.

RB Isa Hinds (#21) got a lot of different things done pretty well.

UNI:

nothing.

I have Webb closer to 4.53 than 4.45 and he was only 173 last Spring is he really 205?!! I guesstimated him at 182, but if he has put to rest all the character questions I could see him going late day 2. Gordon is about 6'5" and I am trying to get a good 40 on him, but I think he's at least as good a prospect as Carr or Turner though a little less polished, think he could gain 20 or so pounds and become a H-Back or 'move' TE?

The numbers I have on Lewis are 5'11.3" 192 and about 4.56, he has run 4.5 flat on a fast surface, can he work on his hands and become a 3rd down back? Did UNI's #71 Bob Swift catch your eye? I hear he is a guy who has played LG and RT well and might get at least a camp invitation. Gray has been timed as fast as 4.54 on an indoor rubberized surface so 4.59-464 on a a slower surface I'd guess, but Troy Brown was a bout that fast and only a tad bigger right? wink.gif Could Lloyd move inside to safety? unsure.gif

I am not sure where I got 205...Maybe their website? He doesn't look 205. But 4.53 would still be plenty for a safety, right? Tell me more about his character issues, Bill. Would ya?

Gordon is Todd Blythe reborn. Not sure he could be the same guy with 20 pounds. Let him be a 5th WR and redzone guy?

Yes, I suppose if Lewis really worked his hands he could be a 3rd down back...maybe. No, I didn't even look at the o-line in this game, as there wasn't anybody listed as a PP.

Let's ask Erik to check into Swift and see if there is any buzz out there.

On Llyod...maybe. He hits like one and is almost big enough.

bcdrama
Southern Miss has been a bit vague but he was hanging out with "bad guys" and had been told to stay away from them, but did not. No fights, 2.45 GPA, no missed practices or classes. But he's from a tough background and coach Bower was afraid for him. There might be more to it but I can't get more out of the involved parties. wink.gif

Swift is an almost-23-yr-old redshirt senior who has, as previously mentioned, played both RT and LG. He is currently UNI's starting LG. 6' 6" 315lbs 5.18. Ranked 34th out of 196 OT prospects profiled by nfldraftscout.com (442 out of 2634 prospects regardless of position). According to them, his stock is on the rise. PFW had him ranked as the 89th OT prospect (out of 97) on their "Pro Prospects Preview" magazine. They gave him a 4.00 grade, which is their lowest grade and basically equates to him possibly being invited to a camp.
