Running back Will Ford ran 18 times for 179 yards and a score to lead South Carolina State to a 24-23 win over Norfolk State Saturday afternoon at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. Junior running back Travil Jamison sealed the Bulldogs victory with a 1-yard run late in the fourth quarter to keep the Bulldogs undefeated in conference play.

The win keeps extends Bulldogs record to 5-2, 3-0 MEAC and ties them with Hampton for first place in MEAC standings. The NSU Spartans, who suffered their third straight defeat drop to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the season.

NSU rallied from a 17-13 halftime deficit by scoring the first 10 points of the second half. A 51-yard completion from Dennis Brown to Dario Walker highlighted NSU’s first possession of the third quarter. Brown capped the four-play, 62-yard drive with a 1-yard sneak, and the point-after by Justin Castellat gave NSU a 20-17 advantage.

After the kickoff, SCSU drove down the field to the Spartans’ 6, but on third-and-goal, Bulldog quarterback Malcolm Long was intercepted in the end zone by Jamie Short. The Spartans then drove 76 yards, all on the ground, to set up a 21-yard field goal by Castellat for a 23-17 lead with 3:10 left in the quarter.

But the explosive SCSU offense responded, driving 64 yards on seven plays for the go-ahead touchdown. Will Ford put the Bulldogs in position for the score with a 43-yard run. Three plays later, Jamison scored from 1 yard out, and Blake Erickson’s extra point gave SCSU the lead once again.

NSU would drive into Bulldog territory on its next two possessions. But Castellat missed a 45-yard field goal with 9:31 left in the game. After a three-and-out by SCSU, the Spartans drove to the Bulldogs’ 37. But Phillip Adams intercepted Brown on 3rd-and-8 with 4:31 left.

With the Spartans out of timeouts, SCSU looked like it would run the clock out. The Bulldogs picked up two first downs, but Hasan Craig forced Ford to fumble with 56 seconds left, and NSU lineman Josh Turner recovered at the Spartans’ 42. But Brown was sacked on two of the first three plays of the next possession, and a penalty backed the Spartans up to their 17. Brown’s desperation pass was picked off at the SCSU 32 by Terrance Smith as time expired.

SCSU out-gained NSU 398-305, but the Spartan defense forced four turnovers and used a balanced ball-control offense to hold the ball for 39:17. Brown was 15-of-26 for 168 yards, and DeAngelo Branche ran 26 times for 94 yards and a TD against one of the MEAC’s best defenses.

Terrell Whitehead led the NSU defense with seven tackles, one for loss, and a pair of forced fumbles in the first half. The second of those, which was recovered by Josh Anderson at the Bulldogs’ 8, set up Branche’s 1-yard run in the first quarter. Castellat also connected on field goals of 44 and 29 yards in the opening half.

Long passed for 189 yards and one touchdown, which went to wideout Oliver Young (seven catches, 101 yards).

NSU
Redshirt Sophomore TB # DeAngelo Branche is the best prospect at this position for NSU in about 20 years. At about 5'11 and just over 200 pounds with what looks like mid to low 4.5 40 speed if he gains 10-15 pounds and losses no speed or quickness he has an outside shot at a late round selection, down the line. 94 yards on 26 carries with a long of 28 and 1 catch for 13 yards.

#11 WR Jamar Johnson 6'2.4" 228 4.67 3 Catches 26 yards, a very good downfield blocker if he can get up to 240-245 and not loose any speed or quickness he has a shot as a H-Back or 'move' tight end. Priority UDFA

WR #19 Dario Walker 5'7.6 184 4.41 Has the kind of speed that can change a defense. His 51 yard deep strike showed he can get open even when coverage is shaded his way if he had not been forced to break stride he would have scored. A poor man's Jermaine Lewis, though not as dangerous as a returner. 4 catches 70 yards. Priority UDFA.
Defense

#9 Junior FS Terrell Whitehead 6'1.5" 202 4.54 Is a prototype physically and is growing up fast mentally, he is aggressive which is often good thing but can over pursue and get out of position. 5 solos, 2 assists including a TFL and forced 2 fumbles.

RS Freshman Corwin Hammond was impressive 6'0.2" 218 4.63 very quick look like a classic 'Will' 3 solo 4 assists, 1 TFL.

CB #27 Don Carey 5'11.5" 193 4.53 The times the ball came his way he was usually in good position. He had 3 tackles, 1 pick, 2 PBUs and 1 fumble return. Priority UDFA.

SCSU

Junior TB #28 Will Ford is very likely a future pro he can run, catch the football and block he has deep speed his 510.6" 187 pound frame and his fumbles are the only things scouts don't like. Despite his lack of bulk he ran inside as well as outside and can break arm tackles. He finished with 179 yards on 18 carries with a long of 63 and a TD, for good measure he to catches for 14 yards, the long was 17 and 3 were lost on a sniffed out screen.

Sophomore QB #7 Malcolm Long 6'1.6" 241 4.7 Has a little Garrard to him he had an bad pass resulting in a pick but usually showed a strong accurate arm and was 15 of 27 for 189 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He has a chance to be as good a HBCU QB prospect as we've seen since Bruce Eugene and like "Big Bruce" he'll need to watch his conditioning.

RS Junior WR #3 Oliver Young 5'11.6" 178 4.47 showed me more than I has seen previously. He is a little like Clarence Verdin, quick and fast, decent hands, routes are not always precise. 7 Catches 101 yards including a 53 yard TD catch and run. With a big senior year he might get taken in the 6th or 7th.

Defense
RS Junior #5 Marshall McFadden was playing 'Bandit' a Safety/LB hybrid. McFadden would line up occasionally at ILB but mostly was in the secondary and still moves well eventhough bulked up to 224 pounds during the off-season he still moves like a safety. A 'poor man's' Aaron Rouse he had 9 solos, 6 assists 2 TFLs, 2 sacks and a PBU. If he runs under 4.6 next year and keeps playing like this he has a real shot at being a day 2 pick.

RS Junior CB #11 Markee Hamlin 5'11.7 179 4.49 Is the most celebrated defensive prospect for SCSU. Largely for being Michael Hamlin's brother and Ken's cousin, but on his own merits he had a great game: 7 solo take downs, 7 helpers, including 2 TFLs, he was largely avoided in the passing game for for all the reasons you'd imagine but excelled in run support despite not being a stocky player. Barring injury and /or a putrid senior year he will be drafted late day 2.

#44 MLB Tony White 5'11.6" 222 4.62 Is the leader of the defense his 5 solo and 6 tandem stops were only part of the story he made calls and repositioned teammates at key times including the final NSU drive that had a role in preserving victory. His size makes him a UDFA, but he is the kind of player that's hard to cut.

How did Dennis Brown look, Bill?

Also, did Dennis Marsh not play? He's still listed as a PP right? Mybe he shouldn't be?

Where was Branch in the A&T game? You'd think I would have noticed him.

Where did you find this game? I'm dying to see Ford.
bcdrama
Tape Delayed on 649, thank God for insomnia, Marsh got blocked and stayed blocked he had 1 more assist than I did and Dennis Brown has the parts good arm though not the cannon that Long has, he is very mobile though his longest run was 6 yards and was -21 due 37 lost on sacks. Think Cleo Lemon but not as accurate, currently he's an area passer not a pinpoint passer. wink.gif
