As a bear fan here in Illinois I don't hear much jets talk. It appears to me that Vernon is perfectly healthy, yet has no more tackles than any of us could accumulate by now.
Is he a bust, not getting playing time? Whats the deal?

i would like to know this as well. im in an IDP fantasy dynasty league, and i drafted him this last season on one of my teams. sure, i'll have him for as long as i want him, but it still would be nice to know what's going on there.

I could be wrong, but from what I heard he was just not playing well. I did hear he got deactivated for the last couple of games.

So far, he has been a bust. The Jets originally drafted him with designs of inserting him in place of OLB Bryan Thomas...needless to say, he could not beat Thomas out. Thomas had a fair year, nothing great, but he did have 5.5 QB sacks, and numerous pressures. When Gholston entered the draft, many questioned his move. It was rumored that he lacked both football intelligence and instincts, and was more workout warrior than football player, and this may, or may not prove to be the case. On the other hand, with a year now under his belt he may step up this coming year to prove he's not a bust...don't go betting your mortgage on him though.

that's what i had heard, and was worried about, was the football smarts or, in this case, lack thereof. i thought that might have been the reason, lacking instincts and not being able to get the playbook.

I was very down on him people went nuts over his workouts, I couldn't believe it.
Not claiming to be a know it all, i always like to keep things unbiased so on the ther hand I will remind everyone that I thought desean jackson would get ripped in half the first time he got tackled and have zero impact in the NFL.

good call huh?

ohio state re-enrolled him and they still couldn't beat texas. naw he has gone the way of bigfoot and the loch ness monster, but remember what mario williams did so don't call him a bust just yet.

I said I thought DeSean Jackson was the best WR in the draft, but thought Ryan would struggle with speed of the game and a substandard offensive line.

But on Gholston I believe he should be used like Mathis, let him just rush the passer. He does not have to be bigger, heck Mathis weighs between 242 and 237, the 2nd coming of Fred Dean! You have to let round pegs be round pegs and not try to force them into square holes.

i think that we should just get his hand in the dirt and let him rush the passer, his coverage skills are not great ,football i.q and instincts so far are poor,i think rex will gets this kid some swagger, by lettin him get after qb;s him ellis and jenkins on that d line will work to me, i think mangini just misused him he didnt play to gholston's strenght he was forcing the issue

Yeah, I missed on him, too... And Matt Ryan. I don't know how I could've doubted a guy with the 6th best passer rating in a power conference like the 2007's ACC and a wide receiver who was coming off a year in which he was less-explosive (by a lot of accounts) than the previous year, and weighed less than 170 lbs soaking wet.

Ehh I wouldn't say missed yet... You know better than this bud. After 1 year, when he struggled to get on the field, he wasn't successful. Sure, it's not what you hope for from the #6 pick, but there's no denying his physical ability. Still has plenty of time to get used to the game as a 3/4 backer, (I dont remember him playing up at OSU, but could be wrong) and Rex Ryan who will definately make the most out of him.

right now it definitely looks like he is a bust but we must give the lad more than one year to prove himself so lets see...i still think he can workout at olb but i do like the idea of letting him just rush the passer and see what he can accomplish simply just doing that...also i agree that rex ryan will be able to get the most he can from him

I wonder how the addition of rex ryan and his 3-4 defense will develop Vernon Gholston?
How is he doing this training camp?
