What was billed as an important Southland Conference showdown, really never turned out to be much of a game really. McNeese has a very good offensive line, and they just totally dominated the SHSU front giving room for junior tailback Toddrick Pendland to just run wild (25 carries for 215 yards and 3 TDs.) Much ballyhooed QB Rhett Bomar of Sam Houston had his worst game of the year, and he wasn't helped much by the fact that his receivers couldn't catch a cold today.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: McNeese State Conference: Southland Columnist: Bill Carroll
Name # Ht Wt Speed Pos Class Game Notes

Quinten Lawrence 6 5' 11.6" 177 4.38 WR 2009: DNP. Injured...And that was a shame as I really wanted to see Lawrence whose sub 4.4 speed is legendary.

Lance Fremin 67 6' 1.3" 300 5.45 C 2009: One of three McNeese linemen who could be in a camp. Gets off the snap fast. Gets to the second level quickly. Powerful, and can knock the DT backward (unless its Mikolajchak). Needs to do a better job of sustaining his blocks. Is short. He gets plenty of credit for Pentland's afternoon, as I they made him look like an all-American. GRADE: Positive

Jeremy Haynes 16 5' 10.2" 185 4.45 CB 2009: Solid job in both phases. Tall enough to get the job done. Aware in the running game. Fast , and comes up fast. Generally tackles well. Showed good hands. Picked one off that was called back in the first half on a penalty, and had a pick 6 fro a 42-yard TD in the second. Two other PDs and a TFL. Solid camp prospect. GRADE: Slightly positive

Terez Jackson 26 6' 1.1" 259 4.85 FB 2009: DNP, or DNSH.

Jamelle Juneau 1 6' 1.0" 215 4.60 S 2009: Nice size. Not overly aggressive. Looks to bump first, then wraps if that doesn't work. Had a missed tackle in the second he should have had. The package looks pretty, now I'd like to see it unwrapped? GRADE: Neutral

LaDarius Key 20 5' 9.4" 177 4.54 CB 2009: Better CB right now than Haynes, but may have a lower ceiling. Very active cover corner who gets it done at this level. Two very nice PDs. Big hitter for his size too. Lots to like about his collegiate efforts, not sure they translate that well to the next level, but he has technique and ability. Not sure if he will be given a fair shot due to his size and lack of blazing speed, but he deserves one. GRADE: Positive

Kyle Link 71 6' 5.7" 300 5.45 OT 2009: Something ugly about his game, but he gets it done in the run game for sure. Herky jerky in pass pro. Lazy when the play is away. Lazy with feet. Prefers a last punch when the defender has gotten deep on him rather than another step back. Limited drop range. Better run blocker than pass blocker who might add some weight and move inside. Does a real nice job caving in the DE (who he outweighed by 70 pounds in this one.) GRADE: Neutral

David Ballard 70 6' 3.4" 302 5.25 OG 2009: Only played sporadically, and hardly at all late in the game. Not sure what the problem was. #61 was in for him most of the second half. Gives too much ground too quickly in pass pro. Slides and seals well. Pulls right well. Overextends and falls down. Nice chop after pulling. Not enough data to grade, but he was looking pretty good when in there. GRADE: Incomplete

Brant Linde 38 5' 11.1" 188 4.51 S 2009: Didn't see him do anything though he was announced. GRADE: Negative

Toddrick Pendland 22 5' 8.6" 174 4.47 HB 2010: Just a junior, but he looked like a future all pro in this one. Good in the openfield. Fast. Must cut sharper. Showed a wicked spin move on his 80-yard gallop early on. I can't tell how much talent he has because McNeese gave him holes the size of Texas most of the afternoon, but he looks promising. GRADE: Positive

Rhett Bomar 7 6' 2.2" 218 4.76 QB 2009: Probably picked Rhett's worst game of the season to scout him, which is OK, because the hype probably needed to be balanced out some anyway. Classic setup and release. Throws into double coverage. Trusts his ability a tad too much. BIG arm (and that's why the raves). Slightly better than a 3/4 delivery, but it is not a true overhead delivery and he did get some balls knocked down. Not tall anyway, so that becomes a magnified concern. Quick release. Decent mobility, but he is slower than he thinks he is, and should not run so much. Will get nowhere running in the NFL. Rhythm passer who was out of it most of the day. Gets frustrated and makes mistakes. He deserved to be frustrated with his receivers today, though. Nice footwork. Not fast enough to escape the rush, though he feels it and tries. Will lower his shoulder and deliver a pop when running. Doesn't have a great supporting cast, but has generally gotten the job done this year anyway. Big arm, good technique, looks like a pro. Doesn't always play like one. Boom or bust type. GRADE: Neutral

Chris Brown 8 6' 2.0" 220 4.65 DE 2010: Chris played great against Kansas earlier this year when he first caught my eye, but he was totally shut down by Link today. He shows good pass rushing ability, but needs to vary his approach when his bread & butter isn't getting it done. Way too small to be a NFL DE anyway. Desperately needs a position change next year. GRADE: Slightly negative

Catron Houston 2 5' 10.1" 184 4.55 WR 2009: Catron and the whole SHSU receiving corps had a sever case of the dropsies today. Cost them the game really, along with the D-line's inability to match up. Quick with the quick outs. Goes down nicely for that low throw over the middle and usually comes up with it, but not often enough today. Has some ability, but needs elite hands at his size/speed, and he just doesn't have them. GRADE: Slightly negative

Eric Mikolajchak 68 6' 3.3" 321 5.25 DT 2009: Nobody is talking about EM, but CDS is. He has the ability to be a rotational 4-3 DT right now. Great size. Good stamina. Can play 4 quarters. Can run for a big man. Hand fights too much. When he gets high he gets blown off the ball, but he generally makes the pile and makes a play when he stays low. Goes after the ball. Had a tackle 20 yards downfield on one play and a couple near the sidelines--something you don't see that often for a 320 pounder. Looks like a 6-7th rounder who should stick because of his willingness to work. Will never be an all-pro or FT starter, but he should make the right roster. GRADE: Positive

OTHER NOTES:

Sam Houston: Who was that #47? Sounded like they were saying "Bootcheck?" He was their best defender today, though the whole defense stunk in the running game overall.

#10 backup TB Tymagic Robinson had a decent game. What a name....

McNeese: QB #4 Derrick Fourroux throws a very nice deep ball, and outplayed Bomar completely today. Legit conference POTY candidate.

#7 Steven Whitehead took up the slack for Lawrence and had a noticeable afternoon.
