This was a turnover-laced extravaganza that was very entertaining for the fans. Every time Virginia Tech would pick off Chris Crane, B.C. would block a kick or pick off the Hokies young signal-caller, Tyrod Taylor. Neither team put up much of a running game, so the question was which QB could make more big plays in the passing game. Even though B.C.'s Crane was picked off three times, he did stake his team to a 28-17 half time lead and threw the ball well enough for the B.C. defense to make it stand up in the second half. This was a game loaded with quality PPs, which also made it a very good watch.
SCOUTING SUMMARY:
College: Boston College Conference: Atlantic Coast Columnist: Steve Martin
Brian Toal 16 5' 11.4" 238 4.65 LB 2009: Tragically, Toal was injured by B.J. Ragi early in the game--this, after Toal missed all of last year with and kinruy-- and he did not return. Looked like a knee. GRADE: Incomplete
B.J. Raji 90 6' 0.3" 329 5.20 NT 2009: Still playing at a high level, but not quite as "on fire" as he was early in the season as he came back off his missing year with a lot to prove to himself and others. What a load. Agile and quick for his dims. Great bull rusher...one of the top 2-3 power rushers in this draft. Intensity is still there. Has the whole package you are looking for in a 4-3 DT. GRADE: Slightly positive
Mark Herzlich 94 6' 3.3" 238 4.70 LB 2010: This guy just impresses me more each time I see him. We were the first scouting service to place him in our Top 100, and this week, we will become the first to declare him a first rounder should he indeed declare. Has everything you are looking for in a pro SAM. Size, intensity, angles, pursuit, wrapping, coverage, productivity, blitz ability, intelligence. It's all there. If he were and inch taller and 10 pounds heavier with everything else he has we'd be looking at a top 10 type of pick. Chases to sideline and makes a lot of plays there. GRADE: Very positive
Ryan Purvis 80 6' 3.6" 262 4.80 TE 2009: I was very pleased to see Purvis used as a blocker A LOT today, which answered all my questions about his ability in that area. And the verdict (drum roll please)...He is a great pass catcher who can block OK. Still, that's good to know. Not sure why he was barely thrown to, especially given that the B.C. receivers dropped some easy catches. Chip blocker. Sent inside to block from a position lined up off the LOS from the LOT. Rounds off his square-ins, and that cost him a reception today. 4th round talent. GRADE: Neutral
Ron Brace 60 6' 2.5" 324 5.10 DT 2009: Ron is back from the injury I saw in the first B.C. game I watched this year, and he is showing no ill effects. If Raji wasn't on this team, we'd all be raving about Brace. He may end up being the better value pick for the same type of player. Not quite as nasty or athletic as Raji. It was great watching he and Render go at each other, and it was usually a stalemate. Solid 5th round talent. Can do a lot of everything well, and will be an instant rotational contributor at the next level. GRADE: Slightly positive
Kevin Akins 7 6' 1.8" 224 4.60 LB 2009: Playing a "monster corner" position still, and was tasked with spying Tyrod Taylor much of the afternoon. May be B.C.'s fastest and best pass D LB. Not sure if he has enough to be a draft pick, but he plays both the pass and the run well enough to definitely be in a camp. Comes with bad intentions, and usually gets where he's going before the competition can get by him. GRADE: Neutral
Chris Crane 10 6' 3.2" 239 4.85 QB 2009: I feel good about our decision to include him in our position rankings before the season began, and about his relatively exalted position there. You might wonder how I can say that after a 3-pick performance, but you need to really remember that this is a rookie out there, DESPITE being a 5th-year college senior. Chris has pro measurables, setup, delivery. He has a lovely overhead release, and really knows how to the over the top of the defense. The ball comes out clean and crisp, and SPIRALS. He has some things you just can't teach. Even though he is playing the Jekyll & Hyde role to perfection from game to game, you can see the talent. You can see with your mind's eye what he can become with some solid pro coaching. The game hasn't slowed down for Chris yet, but when it does....look out. Stands in strong, and throws a tight ball. Gives good effort and is a worker who wants to get better. On the downside, his lack of experience is readily apparent. He still makes dumb mistakes, but they are the aggressive kind you can live with, i.e. he challenges DBs because he knows he can. He MUST learn to throw it away when a sack is imminent. He must keep his chin up and develop a short memory. If he can do all of those little adjustments, you may have an NFL starter here one day. GRADE: Positive from a scouting standpoint, Neutral from a college game-day standpoint
Matt Tennant 65 6' 3.9" 294 5.08 C 2010: Techincially sound. Rarely beaten in pass pro. Great worker who packs a punch and never stands around. He has all the tools, but needs to add 10-15 pounds of solid muscle to be ready for the 2010 draft. He should NOT come out, because he could wind up in the 2nd round next year, whereas he is a 5th rounder if he comes out this year. Will also benefit from the B.C. O-line rep. GRADE: Positive
Alex Albright 98 6' 4.5" 245 4.77 DE 2010: DNP. Injured early in the season.
College: Virginia Tech Conference: Atlantic Coast Columnist: Steve Martin
Sergio Render 70 6' 2.9" 316 0.00 OG 2010: I am not seeing what everyone is raving about, really. Yes, he is solid in both run blocking and pass blocking, but he doesn't blow your socks off in either phase. Actually went backwards on purpose in short yardage (!?) on one key late 4th and short which Va Tech did not pick up. Stands around sometimes. Very nice punch and recoil. Generally stalemated Ron Brace which is no easy task. I can see him being a draft pick in 2010--perhaps even a 3rd rounder, but don't go out and by a Mercedes just yet, young man. GRADE: Neutral
Victor Harris 1 5' 11.5" 187 0.00 CB 2009: Ideal corner back size and approach. Nasty and aggressive. Can really lay the lumber. One of the best technicians at his spot in the NCAA, and is pro ready. Understands responsibilities. Good coverage, and adequate makeup speed. Dangerous kick returner who can even fill in as a spot receiver. Very productive picking off passes, and has very good hands. A game changer. Sometimes is overly aggressive and gets beaten by the double move. Jumps routes too quickly and lets his man behind him. Doesn't have blazing makeup speed for when he is beaten deep. Has bounced around a lot in college and needs to be locked into a role at the next level and have the spot taught to him. Must stay focused off the field and when it comes to the playbook. GRADE: Positive
Sean Glennon 7 6' 3.4" 224 4.85 QB 2009: DNP. Benched behind Tyrod Taylor, and it does not appear to be setting all that well with him--understandably. At the right school, he could be a star and a draft prospect. Right now, he is just an afterthought for the 2009 draft.
Orion Martin 90 6' 1.5" 255 4.85 DE 2009: Nothing terribly special here. Nice collegiate DE with nice collegiate size and get off. Solid pressure applier, but doesn't finish. Hand fights when he should JUST GO. OK in coverage for a DE. GRADE: Slightly negative
Cory Holt 12 6' 3.5" 215 4.80 WR 2009: I didn't see him...
Brett Warren 33 6' 0.4" 237 4.75 LB 2009: Big enough and smart enough to be in anybody's camp. Improving every year. Has a good motor and overall understanding of the game. Puts himself in the right position to make the play, and tackles with solid technique. Very good blitzer. Plays faster than he times. No "wow" factor in any of his measurables. Only really productive in his final year in Blacksburg, and hasn't proven his ability. Liability in coverage because of his size, but he is fairly aware in coverage. GRADE: Neutral
Purnell Sturdivant 45 5' 9.9" 225 4.60 LB 2009: Small, but quick and active. Is generally around the ball. Good blitzer. GRADE: Neutral
Ryan Shuman 58 6' 2.8" 293 5.30 C 2009: Solid in all phases. Fights hard in the running game. Good hand fighter. Good shotgun snapper. Very reliable. Lays people out on the second level if they don't see him coming. Rocked back, but recovers and stalemates after absorbing the initial blow. GRADE: Neutral
Nick Marshman 67 6' 4.2" 339 5.35 OG 2009: Massive guy who will every fight he ever has in a phone booth. Get him out in the open though, and he can be beaten. Lumbers. Slow to recover and change directions. Very solid straight ahead, but struggles hitting moving targets on the second level. Immovable object in pass pro, and really excels in short-area pass protection. Some plays he never touches anyone. Mauler who would be right for a team that uses tight spacing. Would never make it in a zone-blocking scheme or where wide-splits are used. GRADE: Neutral
OTHER NOTES;
B.C. I really feel awful about Brian Toal. Need to keep an ear out for developments on his injury status.
#18 Rich Gunnell (a junior WR, 5'11", 186) had a wonderful punt return/TD where he made 5 people miss in succession as he danced over 50 yards to the endzone.
B.C.'s freshman RB Montel Harris is fairly ballyhooed, but didn't show me much in this one.
Va Tech:
Darren Evans (#32) a freshman RB will be a player.
Junior TE Greg Boone (#8) looked very solid.
Kam Chancellor is the star of this defensive unit (after Macho Harris) and if he declares (he's a junior) he has the size and tools to be a first day pick. ADDED TO DATABASE. Go ahead and read more about him there....TIA...
