The Elon Phoenix had run off 7 victories in a row since an opening loss on the road at Richmond, and earned their highest national ranking ever entering the contest (#3/#7) with 6-1 (#4/#8) Wofford, whose only loss also came early on (against South Carolina) but they got brought back down to earth against a very disciplined option offense that compiled 7 rushing TDs on the day. Wofford's QB Ben Widmyer (#6) ran the offense beautifully and was a very slippery running threat himself, and Phoenix just did not have the horses on defense up front to stop the option attack. The Terriers have their own version of thunder (RB Dane Romero, #18) and lightning (RB Jeremy Mitchell, #5) and they looked just like Navy out there in more ways than one. Also, Elon's excellent sophomore QB Scott Riddle (#16) just did not look himself early on, threw three picks in the game, and really didn't get much going until the second half when the game was already pretty well over. Not a lot of pro-level talent here, but a couple of very well-coached teams who are fun to watch and who play hard.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Elon Conference: Southern Columnist: Bill Carroll

Terrell Hudgins 19 6' 2.3" 237 4.58 WR 2010: Just a junior, but already looks like a pro. Nice build. Stiff arm after the catch will take you down. Pretty decent patterns, but needs to sharpen them up some more. Above average hands. Not a real good toe toucher. High points the ball and looks it in nicely. Big soft hands and long arms. Could be the next Marques Colston. Creates his own separation with that build. Set the SoCon record today with his 34th career TD grab. GRADE: Positive

Brandon Lane 31 6' 4.2" 258 5.09 P 2009: The real deal. Booms it and it gets great hang time. Only punted twice. One was a 59-yarder which was fair caught, the other a 48-yarder downed inside the 20. Top 10 punter in this draft without a doubt. Great size. GRADE: Positive

Corey Weaver 10 5' 11.5" 215 4.55 LB 2009: Was not around the ball much in the first half, but came on nicely in the second half. Had two TD-saving tackles, but they ended up getting those TDs later anyway. The whole defense frankly stunk. It's half personnel and it's half scheme and lack of adjustment. Weaver does show decent hips and COD. Could be a SS candidate, but he will really have to catch someone's eye at a pro day, and I'm not sure that's going to happen for him. If it did, he has ideal size, weight and speed for the position change, though he'd have to be paired with a good coverage safety, and be given time to retool. GRADE: neutral

College: Wofford Conference: Southern Columnist: Bill Carroll

Seth Goldwire 43 5' 10.2" 223 4.63 LB 2009: A very solid FCS LB with enough fluidity and diagnosing ability to be brought to camp. Smooth drops into coverage. Very productive. Playing inside now, but he looks like a WILL to me. If he's really 4.63, he'll get to camp. GRADE: Positive

Andy Strickland 17 5' 11.5" 197 4.62 WR 2009: Another very good possession receiver who showed surprising quickness getting behind the last man today. Had a 59-yard TD catch over Elon's best cover corner in the second quarter which really deflated Elon, especially since their CB went out with a pretty bad hammie pull on that play. Clever and sneaky. Gets open and shows very good hands. If he gets to camp he'll be a real tough cut for somebody to make. GRADE: Positive

OTHER NOTES:

Elon: #43 Brandon Williams is their best defensive player at OLB. Just a sophomore, but a definite database guy later on.

#11 Bo Williamson is a nice complementary receiver to Hudgins. Looks a tad faster than Terrell.

#2 Brandon Newsome is just a sophomore, but he has a nice shot at being an elite SoCon back over the next two years.

Wofford: Their 1-2 running back punch will be hard to beat, and these guys play with grit, determination and discipline. This team rarely beats itself, and they can control the clock with their offense. A definite possibility for the nation title game here folks...

They also have to good FCS linemen in ROG Ben Miller and ROT Derek Wooten, but both were on the ground too much to be in the database though they have pro size. #93 Layton Baker is a nice FCS nose.
