Full Version: Derek Anderson to Detroit, Minnesota?

Now that he's been benched in Cleveland it looks as though Derek Anderson will probably end up leaving the Browns via trade at the end of this season. The first question I had to ask myself was where would he go, and then it dawned on me.

The Lions have no QB and also now have 2 1st round picks. Consensus says they use one of those picks to draft their future signal caller, but what if they were able to acquire a Pro Bowl quarterback with maybe the second of those picks, or even their second rounder?

The Vikings are another team who could use a top QB and have shown a willingness to give up draft picks in recent years, so they could be in the mix too since the general feeling is that they are a quarterback away from a big playoff push.

Of course, if Brady Quinn doesn't cement his place as a starter, this may all be entirely moot.

I don't think that Detroit will trade for him but I can't tell the future. I wouldn't be surprised if Minnesota would trade for him when it was reported that they tried to trade for Brady Quinn. We shall see.

I doubt that the Lions will trade for Anderson since they recently signed Cullepepper. Plus a first round pick would be too much for one good year.

Yeah, case and point. 1 good year. And the Browns re-signed him for a pretty lucrative, back-loaded contract. So (a) they won't be able to afford trading him, and (cool.gif no team is going to want to pick up that kinda of cap liability. Especially not for a guy who had 1 fluke season as a starter. Believe me, I watched him a lot in College, and though he's got extremely good arm strength, he's usually useless for the intermediate routes.

That said, the Lions will likely unload both first and thirds to get him. laugh.gif

I wouldn't say it was a fluke year, personally. I don't know how you have a fluke year. A fluke game, maybe. But a whole year? This draft sucks for QB's. Who is better than Anderson? Stafford? Stafford is inconsistent as well, the difference is that Derek has made a Pro Bowl and has a bigger arm. Sam Bradford isn't even eligble for the draft, Tebow is not a great NFL prospect. So who exactly is better than Derek?

Actually...Bradford is a RS Soph and therefore is eligible for the draft I believe.

This years QB class is pretty weak, there is nobody really standing out other than maybe Bradford. You look at Stafford, Freeman, Sanchez and they all are pretty similar. They have good qualities, and some not so good ones.

Other interesting thing to think about is, can you place all the blame on Derek Anderson. Now I haven't had the opprotunity to see a lot of their games, but Braylon Edwards is having an awful year, Stallworth has been hurt, and they don't seem to be able to run the ball with too much success. Brady Quinn was brought in and has done some good things, but hasn't set the world on fire. I do remember that Anderson did not look good in the Pro Bowl and through sloppy passes. So can we lable him a one year wonder? Or is he just having an awful year like the rest of his teammates? I can't see him being somebody that a team would risk a 1-3 round pick to get. Even if he does move to another team he probably wouldn't be anything more than a stop gap for a young QB or a veteran back up.

I personally think Nate Davis might turn out to be the cream of the crop, other that being a smidge under 6'2 he has it all and guys like: Jevan Snead, Dan Lefevour as well as Colt McCoy are not too far behind, I think all of the Jr.s would be well-served to return the senior class has some sleepers: Mike Reilly, Chase Clement, David Johnson, Chase Holbrook, Rhett Bomar, Nathan Brown, Billy Farris, Drew Willy and Dominic Randolph are all senior sleepers with a decent shot at sticking on an NFL roster. wink.gif

I do agree about Nate Davis. Personally I think Freeman, Davis and LeFevor will be the best out of this group. I'm sure it was just a mistake, but McCoy announced that he is staying next year.

DA had the majority of his TDs over like a 3 week span. AT the end of the year he was terrible. Somehting like 11 picks over last 5 games or so... I was predicting that honestly. Bradford IS eligible. But why would you draft a high QB, if that's the point you were trying to make?

If McCoy stays in school he has a real shot to be the #1 selection in 2010, as well as Sanchez if he returns to school, along with Darrius Heyward-Bey Maryland, McKnight, Moreno, Everette Brown, etc.

Being a Vikes fan I'm hoping they don't go with a DA plan...
I'd much rather see if Warner were available or if Favre opts out of his contract as a stop gap til TJack, Booty or hopefully a newly drafted guy could win the spot a year or two down the road.
