...ugh, that second half. The score was 14-7 going into the locker room as the Tigers veteran QB Sean Shaefer hit exciting sr. PP WR Tommy Breaux with a 44-yard scoring strike with just 2 ticks left. Towson should have called it a game at that point, because they didn't put up another first down until 8:30 was remaining in the 4th quarter, and that came on a personal foul call against the Tribe's stud CB Derek Cox. In that 3rd quarter, W&M Outscored Towson 20-0, outgained them 204 to -4, and gained 11 first downs to Towson's 0. The bttom line, is that Towson has the skill guys, but they just don't have the depth in the trenches to compete against the nationally-ranked clubs they face week after week in the perennially powerful CAA.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: William & Mary Conference: Colonial Athletic Columnist: Steve Martin

Elliott Mack 2 5' 11.5" 195 4.60 WR 2009: DNP...Out with a knee, they hope to have him back this weekend.

Jacob Phillips 11 6' 2.5" 209 5.00 QB 2009: Hadn't really scouted Jacob much before, but he has matured into a poised QB who runs the optional well, throws a nice clean ball (though often misses high)and manages the game with maturity and poise. One of the bigger QBs in the CAA, he is the 4th that should get a camp look this coming summer from the CAA. Runs with some wiggle. Knows the offense. Nice deep sidelines pass, but misses the other deep throws long. Buys time. Solid throwing form and pocket presence. Average arm strength. GRADE: Slightly positive

Josh Rutter 44 6' 2.2" 225 4.75 LB 2009: DNP. Don't know the story.

Derek Cox 37 6' 0.0" 186 4.60 CB 2009: Cox may be the best 2-way CB in the CAA. Good size. Hits like a safety. In fact, that may be where he gets a look. vrey productive in this game with about 8 tackles, 2-3 of the "wow" type. A pick, and a PF. Shows both solid coverage skills at this level and the ability to read, react, and come up quickly in run support. Tackles like a LB. GRADE: Positive

College: Towson State Conference: Colonial Athletic Columnist: Steve Martin

Jordan Manning 36 6' 0.0" 228 4.70 LB 2009: Jordan may be my defensive POTY in the CAA despite his team's woes. Played standup OLB at times, and then was the MLB on forst and obvious running downs. Not very big, but that's about the only real negative (other than LOC) that you can pick on with this kid. Could play for any college team. I'd start him at WILL, and see how he develops. Should be drafted late, but probably won't be. Super productive. Nice leadership package. All around goo football player who will not get you hurt in any aspect of LB play. GRADE: Positive

Marcus Lee 16 6' 1.3" 195 4.55 WR 2009: Sharp cuts, and pretty sure hands. Has always been Shaefer's favorite target, but doesn't do enough in the YAC department to excite anyone. Tommy Breaux was the obvious better PP in this one. May get a camp look becuase he is fundamentally sound, but he lacks any standout characteristic to make you think he could be any more than a camp player. GRADE: Neutral

Sean Shaefer 13 6' 0.2" 215 5.00 QB 2009: Story of two halves for the CAA's departing passing leader. Was pretty solid in the first half, but fumbled on the first play in the second half, through both his picks in that half, and just never got it going after that sweet TD pass just before half time. Shaefer runs with some wiggle too, and actually scored on a 8-yard run in the first half that would have given Towson a 2-TD lead--something they haven't had in awhile, and some real confidence entering the final 30 minutes. It was called back fro holding, and that has been the story of the Towson season lately. Shaefer has tons of poise. Trows well when rolling right. 3/4 delivery, but he gets it there. Bit of a slinger. 3-step passing is his rhythm builder, but he couldn't get it done that way in the second half with a porous O-line letting the rush in. Checks down very smoothly. Plays with poise, but got no help today. First pick was not his fault, and second was a frustration heave because everything else was failing. Some weeks I think he will develop into a fine WCO passer, and year-one 3rd stringer. Other weeks, I think he will end up being a darned good firefighter like the rest of his family. GRADE: Slightly negative

Drew Mack 15 6' 0.6" 205 4.66 S 2009: Big enough an nasty enough to also go camping. Productive pure SS at this level who will stick you. Got his first pick of the year (and just Towson's second) in the first half. Productive and sure tackler. Could be the best run-support safety in the CAA right now. Had a PD in the second half. GRADE: Neutral

Tommy Breaux 85 6' 7.3" 207 4.65 WR 2009: You can just see Tommy improving week by week. Still looks skinny, but he really churns those long legs and covers ground, and is starting to really look like a football player, not just a basketball player in pads. Showed good separation quickness and is snatching instead of cradling now. Needs another year, but his time is up. Had a nice KR on a reverse handoff to open the game and several big play catches. So skinny...Will get bumped off his routes and manhandled early in his pro career (if he has one) but you can't teach 6'7" and 4.60...You CAN send him to GNC. GRADE: Positive

OTHER NOTES:

W&M: Quite a few underclassmen to remember here. This squad is getting it done with young guys. Chief among those is perhaps freshman tailback Jonathan Grimes (#34) who had 300+ AP yards vs. Villanova and had another fine day today. Great vision. Solid RB hands and a second gear.

RS Fr. LOT Jack Marcey shows promise.

RS Jr. D.J. McCauley (#4, 5'11", 180) is a capable FCS wideout.

RS Jr. DE Adrian Tracy (#97, 6'4", 244) leads the CAA in sacks (8) and showed me 2 of them today. He's a load at this LOC.

RS Jr. DT Sean Lissemore (#93, 6'4", 274) is a very nice size for a CAA DT, and he is a solid run stuffer.

Towson:

Soph DT (#64, 6'2", 295) Yaki Ibia flashes future star potential, but was playing gingerly today, and didn't look like the sam player who gave Navy some fits in week #1.

RS Freshman (and Penn State trasnfer) LB Paul Stefanik (#43, 6'1", 230) showed up, and caught my eye.

NT Marcus Valentine (#55) did some nice things too.

Tommy reminds me of Drouzon Quillen, so no, he's a long shot, but intriguing. I think Manning is the best player on the team with Mack a close second.
