Behind an amazing second-game starting performance by QB Keiffer Garton (#13, 6'2", 205) the Penn Quakers held on for a hard-fought victory over a determined Princeton Tiger squad. The kid is an impressive runner, and threw well enough in his second start to keep the below-average (even for the Ivy League) Princeton defense off guard most of the afternoon. To be perfectly honest though, this was like scouting a 5A Florida or 6A Texas high school football game. In fact, the speed and overall athleticism of some of those games would probably surpass what I saw out there.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Pennsylvania Conference: Ivy League Columnist: Steve Martin

NONE.

College: Princeton Conference: Ivy League Columnist: Steve Martin

Ryan Coyle 46 6' 3.0" 210 4.85 P 2009: Only punted once, but it was enough to see the potential there. This guy could punt for any school. The one he got off today was a beautiful 54-yarder with no return. He looked quick and powerful. Still, it was just one punt, but there's a reason he's listed as a FCS All-American. GRADE: Incomplete

Pete Buchignani 97 6' 3.0" 255 4.80 DE 2009: Showed me nothing. No closing ability on the pass rush. Average stoutness at this level for the run. Had a couple tackles, but was far from being any kind of force in this game. GRADE: Negative

OTHER NOTES:

Penn: While they have no senior pro prospects, they have a few juniors who make the database next year.

DT Joe Goniprow was the most impressive of the bunch in this one (#75, 6'1", 270). He got good penertration on almost every snap and was getting double and triple-teamed all day. Fights hard and closes pretty well to the QB. Not sure how he might project, and Ivy guys always have other options, but he's a solid FCS DT for sure.

LB Jake Lewko (#53, 6'1", 225) is a tough little POA run defender at this level. Decent open field tackler.

CB Chris Wynn (#6, 5'9", 175) catches your eye at this LOC.

WR Kyle Derham (#18, 6'1", 185) is a reliable possession receiver with no pro future, but he's a fine FCS receiver.

RB Mike DiMaggio got his clock cleaned, and suffered what looked like a career-ending knee injury (it looked NASTY) but came back and played! Kudos for toughness.

Princeton: Best player on the field for them was Sophomore LB #51 Steve Cody (6'1", 225). He has a shot at a camp in 2011 if he wants one. All over the place and good form tackler.

Jake Lewko is a kid I watched quite a bit in HS (he went to my alma mater). He was a really tough-nosed player for the Shawnee Renegades. He played on the same team as Rutgers OC Ryan Blaszczyk. I think he's one of those typical try-hard Ivy linebackers that might earn a camp invite and impress on special teams, but not much more.
