Full Version: Georgia 17, Auburn 13

cjs206
In the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry game the Georgia Bulldogs were once again to be found hanging on in the final seconds despite being far better on offense than the Auburn Tigers. Indeed, if Kodi Burns could have connected with Ben Tate on 4th and 1 from about the 12 yard line, Georgia would have lost this game. Nevertheless, the class of Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno once again stood out, as did the Auburn defense.

This game, in case you were wondering, is from 11/15 -- I've just been a bit delayed in doing the write-up, so sorry.

College: Georgia Conference: Southeastern Columnist: Craig Strachan

Brannan Southerland 36 6' 0.0" 240 4.60 FB 2009
Has totally lost his place to Shaun Chapas and saw very limited action in this game. The injury he suffered which kept him out of the early season games could well have cost him a lot of money. Grade: Incomplete.

Jeff Owens 95 6' 3.0" 292 4.90 DT 2009
DNP - injured.

Matt Stafford 7 6' 3.0" 227 4.70 QB 2010
For once, Stafford didn't make that shocking mental error that I've come to expect from him. Instead, he looked poised and showed all the sorts of things that will have scouts drooling. His understanding and ability to read a defense are second-to-none. He regularly makes pre-snap changes depending on what he sees. Showed his leadership abilities. Can make all the throws, and then some. Grade: Positive.

Mohamed Massaquoi 1 6' 2.0" 200 4.50 WR 2009
Massaquoi didn't continue his string of big games in this one but he did come up with a couple of big 3rd down catches. One which sticks in my head was a great throw from Stafford through a tiny hole in the coverage which Massaquoi caught and moved the chains with. Isn't among the elite receivers in this draft but probably deserves mid-round consideration. Grade: Slightly positive.

Knowshon Moreno 24 5' 10.3" 208 4.46 HB 2011
I'm beginning to run out of superlatives to describe Moreno. He is so strong, makes players miss almost every time he gets the ball and is a reliable receiver out the backfield too. Here in the UK we having a saying that "he can turn on a sixpence" and although I don't know what the US equivalent is, it definitely applies to Moreno. Grade: Positive.

Tripp Chandler 86 6' 5.0" 250 4.75 TE 2009
Started, but had no impact on the game at all. Grade: Incomplete.

Demiko Goodman 85 6' 2.0" 190 4.36 WR 2009
DNP.

Jeremy Lomax 55 6' 4.0" 247 4.55 DE 2009
DNS and his only impact was a facemask penalty in the second half. Grade: Incomplete.

Geno Atkins 56 6' 1.0" 290 4.99 DT 2010
Today I finally saw the impressive side of Geno Atkins' game after a couple of average performances. He pretty much had his own way with the Auburn offensive line today. Recovered a fumble, knocked down a pass at the line and consistently got pressure on Kodi Burns. Has already said he is staying for his senior year which is the right move in my opinion, but this game gave me an insight into what Atkins could be. Grade: Positive.

Kade Weston 91 6' 5.0" 315 5.15 DT 2010
DNP.

Dannell Ellerbe 33 6' 1.0" 235 4.60 LB 2009
Still recovering from his injury but played more this week than last. Looked very good vs the run and showed he is a solid tackler. Doesn't have star power of say a Rey Maualuga or Brandon Spikes but will make a solid starter in the NFL. Grade: Slightly Positive.

Rennie Curran 35 5' 11.0" 220 4.52 LB 2011
Another member of the "CJ has run out of superlatives" club. Has great football instincts and buzzes around the field all day. Recognized a screen play very early and got to the back to make a TFL as he received the ball. Has good lateral speed. Grade: Positive.

C.J. Byrd 5 6' 2.0" 195 4.50 S 2009
Spent most of this game up in the box trying to shut down any attempted runs by Kodi Burns, which he did fairly successfully. Not tested in coverage. Seems a little light to be playing SS. Grade: Neutral.

Asher Allen 2 5' 10.0" 190 4.40 CB 2010
Always lines up on the short side of the field. Loves coming in from corner to help vs the run. Good tackler -- goes in low and hard. Not really tested in coverage. Grade: Neutral.

Ramarcus Brown 11 5' 11.0" 175 4.45 CB 2009
Nickel corner with little to no chance of being drafted. Grade: Incomplete.

Prince Miller 23 5' 8.0" 190 4.45 CB 2010
Like Asher Allen, Miller was rarely tested in coverage. He did muff a punt which was recovered by Auburn and the Tigers duly scored off it. Grade: Slightly negative.

Clint Boling 60 6' 4.0" 286 5.20 OG 2011
Boling has filled in admirably at LT for Georgia after all the injuries they suffered but I still feel he will be much better suited back inside at guard. He doesn't look comfortable in the passing game but appears much more of a natural run blocker. Was called for a false start in this game. Grade: Neutral.

College: Auburn Conference: Southeastern Columnist: Craig Strachan

Tez Doolittle 99 6' 3.0" 300 5.05 DT 2009
Despite being the slightly less heralded of the Tigers' DTs Doolittle did rather a lot in this game. He blocked a Georgia FG on the opening drive, batted down a pass at the line and had a couple of TFLs. He played in significant role in forcing Stafford to throw early by causing lots of problems for the interior Georgia OL. Might want to consider a name change to Tez Dooalot (sorry...couldn't help it!). Grade: Positive.

Rod Smith 80 5' 11.0" 185 4.50 WR 2009
Made his first catch in this game early...in the 4th quarter. No impact. Grade: Negative.

Brad Lester 1 5' 11.0" 198 4.48 HB 2009
DNP.

Oscar Gonzalez 78 6' 7.0" 295 5.15 OT 2009
DNP.

Jason Bosley 68 6' 4.0" 280 5.10 OG 2009
Started again at center and did another good job there. Sure, he's not exactly Jonathan Luigs but he is solid enough to consider drafting in the latter rounds as a backup with potential. Blocks well enough to move back to guard too. Grade: Slightly positive.

Tommy Trott 5 6' 5.0" 250 4.75 TE 2010
Didn't really get involved in this game a lot. His biggest contribution was dropping a very catchable pass after Burns had rolled out and evaded the rush to extend the play. Grade: Slightly negative.

Tray Blackmon 10 6' 0.0" 220 4.70 LB 2010
DNP - injured.

Antonio Coleman 52 6' 2.0" 250 4.70 DE 2010
Another key member of a very good Auburn defensive line. Gave Clint Boling a lot to worry about on passing downs and as I already said Matt Stafford made a conscious effort to get the ball out early in this game to avoid the rush. Has a nice set of moves and quick feet. Grade: Positive.

SenDerrick Marks 94 6' 1.0" 296 5.15 DT 2010
The third Tigers' defensive lineman who would hear his name called sooner rather than later in April if they all come out. Showed his power and upper body strength. Was also seen firing up the crowd on several occasions which is a good thing in my book. Still looks slightly hampered by the injury but showed why he deserves a lot of attention in scouting circles. Grade: Positive.

Tyronne Green 71 6' 2.0" 307 5.25 OG 2009
Didn't show me much either way today really. Not a stand out, must have player that's for sure. Was called for holding and it couldn't have been more obvious if he'd painted himself bright pink. Grade: Slightly negative.

Lee Ziemba 73 6' 8.0" 288 5.00 OT 2011
Didn't get to see much of him in pass protection but he showed today that he is just as effective a run blocker and is willing to get into the second level as the play develops. Grade: Slightly positive.

Ben Tate 44 5' 10.0" 185 4.40 HB 2010
Nothing special -- "just a guy" in the words of the great Bill Carroll. Has OK hands. Doesn't play as fast as the 40 time would suggest. Not a tackle breaker. Grade: Neutral.

Jerraud Powers 8 5' 9.0" 190 4.45 CB 2010
Was generally outmatched against Massaquoi and Green as they had 5 - 7 inches over him. Did make a big play in the red zone as he tipped the ball away away from Green on a 3rd down play. Unless he is able to jump through the roof of the RCA dome his size is going to prevent him from being giving a significant shot in the NFL. Grade: Neutral.

Chris Evans 59 6' 0.0" 225 4.70 LB 2009
Present. Grade: Neutral.

Aairon Savage 5' 10.9" 190 0.00 S 2010
DNP.

Other Player Notes

Georgia's Freshman WR AJ Green is a future top 5 draft pick, probably in 2011 which I believe is the earliest he can declare. Put that in your diaries right now.

Auburn HB Mario Fannin got the start today and looked impressive. He showed a good level of playmaking ability, a good burst of speed and accounted for both of Auburn's TDs.
