I just read a write up from Nolan Nowricki on Sherrod Martin. He wrote that he has better ball skills than Leodis McKelvin who he used to play with at Troy.

I looked for a profile on this site, but I didn't see one.

Has anyone watched him, yet? He's a senior.

He's in here. Let me find it and I'll post it. McKelvin didn't have very good ball skills so I don't know how much that's saying.

BPB, This is what I wrote about him when I scouted him against FAU. He doesn't seem to have lights out speed like you'd like and he's had some injury history. Also, from what I remember about his career he can dominate and then just disappear. He doesn't jump out consistently on tape the way a McKelvin or Tyrell Johnson did playing in the Sunbelt. He'll get drafted mid to late is what I'm thinking. I hope that answers your questions.

Sherrod Martin 6 6' 1.0" 187 4.66 CB 2009
Granted a red shirt year and is coming back for his final year. Had excellent coverage on a half back option but didn't fall for it. 5 tackles on the evening and has played safety in the past. Excellent coverage on the evening and wasn't really challenged through the air. Grade: Slightly Positive

I have Troy on tape, but have not scouted them yet this year.

BPB I just read what Narwocki wrote and he has a much faster 40 time at 4.46. From what I've seen of him I haven't seen that kind of speed but I think he is faster than the 40 time I have. Anyway, the Combine will sort out the 40 time shortly. If he can run a 4.46 than he can play corner.

Thanks guys.

Nowricki's write up jumped out at me. He really likes Taylor Mays also, which isn't a surprise. I think if Mays shows he can cover he's a top 10, maybe a top 5 guy. With his size, speed, Mays is a game-changer. The only question is whether he can use his physical tools to their full potential on the field.

BPB,

You're welcome. Mays has the total package. Someone said he'd like Vernon Davis the TE for SF. If he can put it all together he's going to be a pro bowler for many years.

Oooooh, that's not exactly a comparison that's going to make him fans in the NFL. Hasn't Davis pretty much come to personify a guy with a $6 million body and a $0.60 brain?

Hopefully, that's not the case for Mays.

I see your point. I was talking attitude so much, talking more physical skills and the need to put it all together. Attitude does play a part in that though.

Yeah, I thought so, but you just never know with some of these guys. Especially the guys who are so physically gifted that they've been able to get by without ever having to learn their position to this point in their football careers.

Great point. Kinda like the basketball player who can jump great and is quick but never works at it.

Mays has mastered what is essentially an NFL defense in time to start as a true freshman and has lined up at FS and SS due to injuries to Ellison and Pinkard in the past, so his football IQ seems not to be a question. wink.gif
