What Needs To Happen For 2009 Season
-Bring in Scott Pioli and Bill Parcells-(Pioli is Parcells son-in-law and it is reported that if Pioli leaves, then Parcells will go to that team with him).
-Fire the whole coaching staff besides for Sam Gash who has done a great job with Kevin Smith.
-Bring in Steve Spagnuolo as head coach, Jeff FitzGerald(Ravens LB Coach) as Defensive Coordinator, and Jerald Ingram(Giants RB Coach) as Offensive Coordinator.
-Get rid of as many guys as possible and bring back hardly any players. Any guys with trade value, trade them for draft picks. If they little or no trade value, cut them.
Round 1, Pick# 1 - Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss The Lions draft Oher over a QB because they want a safe pick here and cannot afford to have another first round bust. They go with Oher over Andre Smith because he is more of a LT that Smith and has better footwork. Smith is a poor waist bender and is over aggressive in pass blocking. Oher is the LT the Lions have needed for the past 15 years. He is big, quick, long, and very athletic. Oher should help out the o-line instantly and will solidify it for the next 10 years. Him and Cherilus will be great together and are perfect for controlling the dominant DEs in the NFC North. Round 1,
Pick# 20 - Brandon Spikes, MLB, Florida The Lions defense has been garbage this season, mostly due to the poor run stuff. The other reason is that they have not had a playmaker who can pull this team out of a hole when things get tough. Spikes is the guy they need at a much needed position. He is very athletic and very big, allowing him to make some great plays. He can play the pass over the middle or make the big hit on the RB running up the middle. Him and Ernie Sims will make a great duo.
Round 2, Pick# 1 - Herman Johnson, OG, LSU The Lions realize that if they want to win, they need to have an o-line. They have not won in past years mostly due to their poor o-line. Johnson is a monster who can open up holes for the run game and is able to dominate big DTs game in and game out. Him and Michael Oher will help out this o-line immensely.
Round 3, Pick# 1 - Dorrell Scott, DT, Clemson The Lions didn't realize how poor their run defense would be after they traded Shaun Rogers. Scott is a big DT with great ability to get into the backfield. He is the replacement to Shaun Rogers and also the future of this Lions d-line.
Round 3, Pick# 20 - Ron Brace, DT, Boston College The Lions were planning on drafting Scott and calling it good until flashbacks from week 1 came into their mind of Michael Turner running all over them like they were a treadmill. Ron Brace is truly the next Shaun Rogers. He is 6,4 335, and is every bit of immovable weight. Brace can fill a hole better than just about anybody besides for Terrence Cody. He is often overshadowed by B.J. Raji which is why his stock falls to here, but he is worth every bit of this pick.
Round 4, Pick# 1 - Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech COMPENSATORY PICK: The Lions have not had a solid QB in countless years. Harrell will be criticized for the system he played in, but I still believe that he could one day be a great NFL QB. He has great leadership skills, mobility, and an excellent arm. A steal in the 4th round. Look for this guy to start for the Lions some time in the future.
Round 5, Pick# 1 - Jake Johnson, OG/OT, Texas Tech The Lions have a horrid o-line but after this draft, their o-line should be very well solidified and also be able to keep the QB upright. The Lions take Johnson for depth and also to be an eventual starter at Guard. Johnson has unmatchable strength and would make a great RG someday. At 6,7 370 he can move just about any d-lineman in the NFL. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy started from day 1 at RG.
Round 6, Pick# 1 - Brandon Tate, WR, North Carolina The Lions traded Roy Williams this season and they can't expect for Calvin Johnson to be the only weapon in the passing game. Tate is a great option for the Lions here. He has good size and speed. He is very versatile and has good hands. A return man as well. A great choice here in the sixth round.
Round 6, Pick# 20 - Tim Jamison, DE, Michigan The Lions have had some young DEs step up and play some damn good football, which has been a relief. Unfortunately the older DEs are declining and slowing down terribly. Jamison is a big DE who is glowing with potential. He could surprise people and be an excellent DE. He has the Julius Peppers size, just not as much quickness. Jamison is great in run support and if he were to lose 10-15 lbs. he could have the quickness to be a dominant pass rusher. A steal here and a player who can impact the future.
In free agency, the Lions must make some improvements on defense and on the offensive line. The guy they must go all out for is Nnamdi Asomugha. The Raiders are likely to break the bank for Asomugha, but the Lions must break it and then some. If they ever plan on having a solid defense that can win them some games, they must be able to stop the pass. Asomugha is the best corner in the league hands down. His stats don't show it, but that is because opposing QBs will not look his way, EVER! The other guy the Lions must chase in free-agency is Matt Cassel. He is not good just because of the talent around him because if WRs could make a QB as good as him then how come Jon Kitna, Dan Orlovsky, and Daunte Culpepper couldn't get it done this season with Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams(for the games Roy was still on the team)??? Cassel would be perfect if the Lions were to draft o-linemen. The rest of the free agents would be guys who would come in and just be role players. They would see playing time, but not necessarily Pro Bowls.
If the Lions were able to do just some of this, they would be set to win a few games and could see at least six wins next season. If they were to do all of this, they could be next year's Miami Dolphins or Atlanta Falcons.
Oh, and the last thing...The ugly honolulu blue jerseys have to go. They have to have something to do with the losing.
