Full Version: Top 4 Offensive Tackles?
CDS Boards > General Access Boards > Discuss the Prospects for the 2009 Draft

I'm not even gonna pretend I know everything about these guys, I just think it'd be interesting to see everyone's opinion on them. Here's what I think:

1. Michael Oher: This may be because I've seen him play the most (3 games this year + Senior Bowl) but I really do think he'll be a quality LT. He gets great drive in the run game and looks like a "natural bender" with pretty good feet. I really respect his decision to play in the Senior Bowl, and give him a lot of credit for showing up when he didn't have to.

2. Andre Smith: I've seen him play 3 times this year and I came away impressed every time. He's nimble for a guy his size, but he should probably lose a little weight. His absence really showed big time against Utah. Guys with his size and athleticism don't come along too often. He doesn't have prototypical LT height and long arms (or it doesn't look like it).

3. Eugene Monroe: I only caught 2 UVA games this season, but he definitely looks the part physically. Big frame, athletic and looks very comfortable getting to the 2nd level. One knock on him is inconsistency, it doesn't really seem like he plays to the whistle. Reminds me a lot of Alex Barron.

4. Jason Smith: Former TE, very athletic but might need to get a little stronger. I can't say a whole lot about him since I only watched 1 Baylor game.

Feel free to share your thoughts on any or all of them, this is one of the most interesting topics of this year to me, it'll be fun watching how it all plays out on draft day

I dont wanna give reasons, too lazy currently, but my 4 are

Smith
Monroe
Oher
Jason Smith...

The order I think they'll go?

Monroe
Jason Smith
Andre Smith
Mike Oher

1. Andre Smith

He is the best overall tackle in the draft. He is probably better suited to play RT but could play both guards and LT too.

2. Jason Smith

Former TE with great feet. Is probably the best pure LT in the draft.

3. Eugene Monroe

He was the guy who kept Brandon Albert at guard at Virgina.

4. Michael Oher

I think he should be higher, but people are down on him because of his inconsistency.

Eugene
Jason
Michael
Andre

Are the order in my opinion. But I am typically wrong!!!

All I know is I hope one of them slides to 18 and the bears continue to make o-line a focus.

1. Andre Smith - Physical beast who, with some coaching and NFL training (i.e., weight room and diet) will be a stud at either tackle position.

2. Eugene Monroe - Probably the most technically sound and NFL-ready of the linemen. Does everything well.

3. Jason Smith - Excellent athlete for a big man and has the most unrealized upside of the top OLs.

4. Michael Oher - Athletic big man with a great frame. Has some boom/bust qualities to him though.

I agree with you that the Bears need to upgrade their offensive line, but do you think that if one of those guys falls to the Bears at 18 that Angelo will actually take them? He might, but with them taking Chris Williams last year to be their LT of the future and all of tackle except Andre Smith are LT I doubt it happens.

My list: wink.gif
#1. Michael Jerome Oher was a fantastic guard, has been a top LOT for 3 years, is still raw but was a 3 sport athlete in HS, lettering twice in basketball and twice in track. For a nealy 300 pound basketball player he was extraordinary averaging 22 points and 10 rebound and earned All-State honors. In track, he was state runner-up in discus. He is still in need of upper and lower body strength and refinement of his puch and placement, but his potential is like that of Orlando Pace.

#2. Eugene Monroe has a very high football IQ, having played with Brandon Albert and DeBrickashaw Ferguson certainly did not hurt. Monroe is a technician a little like Vanderbilt OT Chris Williams and his frame is still a bit slender, for his position, he has a tendency to lean a bit to the outside and he will need to improve on his conditioning a bit, however he has the kind of athletic ability, instincts, mind and feet that allow you to play in the league for a long time, he has Walter Jones type upside.

#3. Andre Smith is the most dominant college player on this list, he started 13 games at left tackle and has surrendered just one sack, how can he not be #1? Because he's about 6'3.7" 334? Actually he's tall enough and he showed improved conditioning this year, but that 1 sack stat is a bit misleading he got beaten 4 or 5 other times and the QB tossed the ball under duress or got across the line of scrimmage, now don't get me wrong, I forsee a 14 year career for him but at ROT, if worst case scenario is that he's a pro bowl ROT that's not too shabby. He may struggle at LOT, but he has incredible talent and might stay on the blindside but I'd worry about matching him against: Merriman, Ware or Umenyora. He is a bit like Jason Peters, but not as quick on his feet.

#4. Jason Smith is the anti-Andre Smith he is lithe and a bit light at just 6'4.5" 302, he plays out of a 2 point stance and was recruited as TE, he is long and lean he looks like a 3-4 DE and is likely to run about 5.18 in the 40 at the combine, but his build and shaky technique might keep him from being a day 1 NFL starter.

I actually think they will. They have neglected the o-line and wr position for far too long. You are correct they did take Chris Williams, but other than knowing his name and position he is a total question mark. The bears have no idea if he will be good or healthy. John Tait is aging very rapidly, josh beekman is nearly the smallest gaurd in the league and Kruetz is going to decline each year.

I am not saying they WILL draft one of those guys, but I think if one of them did fall that far they would.

The teams 4 most pressing needs by far are; WR, Pass rusher, O-line and Safety in no particular order. They need to address at least one of them via FA and then take the other 3 with first 3 rounds. I don't care what round or order they take the position.

I would love them to sign Jordan Gross, Terrell Suggs or T.J. Whosyourdaddy (not toatally sold on him though)

What a long, wordy pile of crap for a simple answer!! Yes, I think they would take an OT.

So 3 out of 6 think Andre is the man, 2/6 for Oher and 1/6 for Monroe. I'm a big believer in Oher but I do recognize some of the risks to taking a guy like him a top pick. I think at the very least he'll be a solid starting OG somewhere, and at best he'll be a Pro Bowl LT. If the ship sinks, I'm going down with it.

My opinions:
1. Jason Smith
2. Eugene Monroe
3. Michael Oher
4. Eben Britton

If you'd like, I can send you a full powerpoint presentation that I made explaining my reasoning for each ranking, and my full scouting report for my top 5 OTs... But I doubt you need that much info, lol.
yerckson3420
No Andre in the top 4 at all huh?

Not that I care, because I am not the biggest fan of him.

Can't wait to say I told you so when Andre is the first OT taken. Why on earth would you make a pp on this?

1st of all: Don't ask why, lol.
2nd: I do think Andre will be a top 10 pick. My rankings are not based on where I believe they'll go, but my own opinions on them.

1) Jason Smith

Andre Smith is Leonard Davis Part Deux. An All-Pro Guard who will struggle at OT.
