Some of you may not have heard much about Robert Haynes, but he has been in the 30s in our CB rankings all year, despite playing at DII Michigan Tech up in northern Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Not exactly a football powerhouse, but they had a very good season this year, and were even on national TV at least once.
Robert is a solidly-built corner (5'10", 206) with good wheels and a hitting streak a mile wide. He stood out like a man among boys at the DII level and has gotten some notice from the pros, thanks in part to CDS.
Let me be the first to welcome Robert to CDS and start things off with a question.
Robert, do you have any regrets about playing at Michigan Tech where there is a lack of exposure that some of the other big-name CB prospects get? Also, how do you plan to get the word out about what you can do between now and the draft?

Robert thank you for your time, with your build and solid tackling, have you been ever asked to play FS or SS? Also what are your most recent times in the 40, 3-cone, your vertical and bench reps at 225 or max bench?

To start off I believe you are put in places in your life for a reason so being at Michigan Tech made me work harder because I knew if that day came when I might get the oppertunity to play at the next level I had to work harder than someone from the division 1 level to have a shot. Well I have an agent Pete Huthwaite who represents me so he will be contacting teams and getting my highlight film to them, also between the Michigan state pro day or Central Michigan pro day I expect to put together a great workout. I played in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, going against teams like Grand Valley,Ashland,Ferris,Hillsdale and Northern Michigan to name a few. This year propects I faced Aron Waldie from Hillsdale, Fred Wells from Northern Michigan and Johnny Long from Ashland, all three of those propects I played really well against. I never been asked to play safty but if that was another way of a team taking me I would, the last time I ran a 40, I ran 4.37 three cone 6.97 verticle 39.5 and did 225 bench press 25 times. thank you for the questions hope to hear from you guys soon.

Anyway...I talked to Coach Kearly about you today. He says you graduated, so congrats on that! So, where are you working out now, and who are you working out with?
4.37 is an incredible time! Was that wind-aided? What kind of surface? And 25 reps? Holy crap...are you serious???
Good luck man, and check back with us often!

I've played with Rob and he is faster than a 4.37 40 more like 4.28 and he has the Michigan Tech record for the cornerbacks for the vertical at 41 inches. Rob is a good player and all he need is a shot and he'll make it. I hope you do well at the pro day and I'll see you in a couple of years when we're both in the NFL.

Unfortunately I am just an independent scout (not NFL-affiliated) so I doubt if it would help much. You usually need a couple of NFL scouts to request your presence at a BCS-school's pro day for it to happen, but have your agent give me a call and I'll see what I can do...

Hey everyone, I was there to watch Robert (and also Leroy) at the pro day. Robert definitely put the best numbers there. The 26 reps on the bench were the 2nd highest behind an offensive lineman who did 29. Even Sam Allen, one of GVSU's draft prospects at offensive tackle, did 24 and Dan Skuta, probably the highest potential GLIAC draft pick put the bench up 20 times.
I had two 4.33's for Robert, as he showed off that track speed.
Here is the paragraph I did on Robert at scout.com for GVSU's website (www.gvreport.com):
Among the non-GVSU performers, the guy who stole the show may have been Michigan Tech's defensive back and return specialist Robert Haynes, who first recorded the best vertical jump, going for 38", and then followed that up with a very impressive 26 reps on the bench for his 191-pound build. He then turned on his track speed with a couple 4.33-second 40-yard dashes, the fastest on the day. He also recorded a 4.14-second short-shuttle, a 6.91-second 3-cone drill, and an 11.17-second long-shuttle time.
Great job again Robert.

Sorry, don't have any contact info, and I only got heights/weights on a couple guys. I showed up about 5 minutes into the workout, and height/weight are the first things they do. I actually caught Robert getting put at 191 pounds but didn't catch an official height for him. I'm sure he can tell you though.

Hey everyone, today at Michigan State I did really well from what scouts told me my high school coach contacted Michigan State for my results and got my forty which was a 4.30 which would have been faster than what I ran last week at Grand valley, also I did 26 reps on the bench and under 4.1 in the short shuttle which would also be an improvement from last week.
lastly the position drills we did was much better for me this week and I showed the ability to catch the ball after dropping a couple at the start of the position drills my last five balls I caught.

Unfortunately, no, Robert. I haven't heard anything from them, and I've called EVERY school that's had a Pro Day. Many big schools are acting like the results are the exclusive property of the NFL Scouts, which is complete and utter B.S., but that's what the scouts are telling the university people, and they are letting the NFL lead them around by the nose.

Pro Days
Another future pro from the small-school ranks?
Posted: March 28th, 2009 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Furman, Grand Valley State, Joel Bell, Sammie Lee Hill, Stillman College
The Grand Valley State Pro Day was held on March 9, with nearby schools Michigan Tech, Hillsdale College and Ferris State also sending players to work out. Representatives from 17 NFL teams, including an assistant linebackers coach for the Cincinnati Bengals, were in attendance to watch five players perform indoors on FieldTurf.
It seems like almost every year, a player from one of these small schools is drafted. Three Grand Valley State players have been drafted this decade, including CB Brandon Carr in the fifth round last year by the Kansas City Chiefs. The others include DT Keyonta Marshall to the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round in 2005 and WR David Kircus to the Detroit Lions in the sixth round in 2003. In 2005, Michigan Tech’s Joe Berger was drafted in the sixth round by the Carolina Panthers.
The three players to keep an eye on this year are Grand Valley State DL Dan Skuta (6-2 1/2, 249 pounds), Michigan Tech DB Robert Haynes (5-9 1/4, 191 pounds) and Hillsdale LB Tom Korte (6-0 1/4, 236 pounds).
Skuta, who also worked at linebacker, fullback and halfback, had times of 4.76 and 4.72 seconds in the 40-yard dash, a 35-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 9-inch broad jump. He had a 4.42 short shuttle and a 7.05 three-cone drill, and he did 20 repetitions on the bench press.
Haynes ran 40 times of 4.38 and 4.43 and had a 38-inch vertical and a 10-foot, 6-inch broad jump. He went 4.21 in the short shuttle and 7.06 in the three-cone drill, and he did 26 reps on the bench press.
Korte ran the 40 in 4.78 and 4.81 and had a 31 1/2-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 2-inch broad jump. He added times of 4.34 in the short shuttle and 7.16 in the three-cone drill, and he did 21 bench-press lifts.

HOLY CRAP, ROBERT!!
Another brand new posting by Gil Brandt again this morning about the Michigan State Pro Day:
RB Ringer, DE Long create buzz at Michigan State
Posted: March 28th, 2009 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Brandon Long, Brian Hoyer, Javon Ringer, Michigan State, Otis Wiley
RB Javon Ringer (5-9 1/2, 203 pounds) and DE/LB Brandon Long (6-2 3/4, 254 pounds) turned in impressive showings at the Michigan State Pro Day on March 18.
The workout, which was attended by 35 NFL personnel men representing 24 teams to watch 14 players, was done indoors on FieldTurf. There were two running back coaches, two defensive backfield coaches and other position coaches in attendance. Scouts and personnel men were happy to be treated to a big breakfast at the event, which began at 11 a.m.
Ringer turned in one of the fastest times ever in the short-shuttle drill, doing it in 3.89 seconds. By comparison, the best time by a running back at the NFL combine was 4.08 seconds by Branden Ore of West Liberty State and Bernard Scott of Abilene Christian. The top short shuttle by any player at the combine was 3.96 seconds by Kevin Barnes of Maryland. Ringer ran a 4.11 at the combine.
Aside from the blazing short-shuttle time, Ringer ran the 40-yard dash in 4.50 and 4.51 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.66 seconds. He stood on the rest of his numbers from the combine.
But Ringer might have been outdone by Long, who was the talk of the pro day. He posted 40 times of 4.61 and 4.63 seconds and had a 10-foot, 9-inch broad jump and a 37 1/2-inch vertical leap — all of which would’ve ranked near the top at the combine. He also had a 4.37 time in the short shuttle and a 6.88 in the three-cone drill, with 32 reps on the bench press.
Here are other notables from the pro day:
QB Brian Hoyer (6-1 7/8, 216 pounds) stood on all of his numbers from the combine.
S Otis Wiley (6-1, 212 pounds) ran times of 4.64 and 4.67 in the 40 with a 35 1/2-inch vertical and a 9-foot, 10-inch broad jump. He had a 4.34 short shuttle and a 6.97 three-cone drill, with nine reps on the bench press.
OT Jesse Miller (6-6, 320 pounds) ran the 40 in 5.49 and 5.48 and had a 22-inch vertical leap and an 8-foot, 9-inch broad jump. He had a 4.85 short shuttle and a 7.81 three-cone drill, with 25 reps on the bench press.
Michigan Tech DB Robert Haynes (5-9 1/4, 189 pounds), who also participated in Grand Valley State’s pro day, ran the 40 in 4.36 and 4.40 and had a 35 1/2-inch vertical and a 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump. He had a 4.18 short shuttle and 26 reps on the bench.
