A hypothedical situation, but if you where in charge of the draft what would you change. Or would you leave it the same?
The thing that I would do is have the 1st round on friday night in prime time. Rounds 2, 3, and 4 would be satruday during the day starting at 12:00 and then on sunday you would get rounds 5, 6, and 7 starting at noon also.
That in itself would change the dynamic a little. Because teams could regroup two nights (instead of just one night) and evaluate who was left on the boards for the next day. There always seems to be some consideration about the first handful of picks the second day being very good after GM, coaches and scouts can regroup the night between rounds.
The only thing I would personally change is the insane contract structure in the high picks that reward 20 year old kids that frankly are a coin flip tens of millions of dollars. I don't have the numbers to back this assumption up, but I think Jamarcus Russell will make more money in his rookie contract than future hall of famer Kurt Warner will make in his entire career.
I do understand the average career in the NFL is very short and its a violent game, so I understand the big money given out. So I don't have a perfect solution to the problem, but it could be incentive based.
