The Rams managed to draft not one player I wanted but that's probably a good thing.
Jason Smith is an obvious stud, ranked by most mocks as the second best talent and the best offensive tackle. Given that they released Pace and that Barron is their only other starter, this was also a real need pick. It's great when BPA meets need. I wanted Eugene Monroe here because I thought he was a great pass blocker and that J Smith had some holes in his game.
James Laurinaitis has never been one of my favorites and I would have preferred Eben Britton. MLB certainly was a big need for the Rams. I always felt that Laurinaitis had poor range and only fair power. I have been looking at him for three years now and was amazed by people who were calling him a top five pick. However, he is intense and seems smart. He is a good blitzer and drops back almost as fast as he runs forward. He is excellent at watching the action and making the right choice. He won't be constantly overrunning plays like Pisa and some previous Rams backers. He reminds me a lot of Stewart Bradley and Antonio Pierce who fit this LB system well.
I didn't know any of the Rams second day picks when they were announced except Ogbonnaya. I was hoping for a receiver like Casey, Collie, Knox or Dillard and they came up with Brooks Foster in the fifth round. He was the number 3 WR at North Carolina and never had a breakout season. He seems to have the physical attributes, even has an NCAA Basketball title as a walk on at NC. Good size, long arms, good hands.
Fletcher Bradley did have a breatkout year in 2008 and appears to have solid credentials, size, speed and ball skills as a CB. It's a definite need position for the Rams as Tye Hill is looking like a bust.
Dorell Scott is the only guy the Rams drafted who seems to have a motor problem. He is a big and mobile DT from Clemson who lookis good in highlights but his reviews always indicate an underachiever. Again, this was a major need position with only Ryan and Carriker in the rotation.
The Rams picked up a developmenta QB from Division II, Keith Null who seems to have a chance. Their last pick, Ogbonnaya, the running back from Texas, looks like what Brian Leonard was supposed to be, a fill in for S Jackson who could block, catch passes and be a decent runner.
Undrafted free agents are always a crap shoot but the Rams spent some money this year and seem to have some prospects, including two big OG's, Allen and Fienga, and a DE, Campbell.
This draft isn't going to change the Rams very much this year. 2009 still looks bleak. However, Smith and Luarinaitis should help and a few of the other acquistions should contribute in the future. It looks like step 1 in a three year rebuilding program went well
