Full Version: JP Losman to the UFL?

Am I the only one who is surprised this guy isn't getting any NFL attention as a free agent? In his one year as a full time starter ('06) he threw 19 TD's and 14 INT's, with a 84.9 QB rating. You've got to think if Dan Orlovsky can get a 3 year, $9+mil deal to backup the injury prone Matt Schaub, Losman is good enough to still be in the league. Anybody agree/disagree?

Losman to UFL

I'm not too surprised. Mike Florio brought up a good point in the article. He can go to the Vegas franchise, be their starter (instead of being a back up), and work under Fassel (who helped Kerry Collins).

Im interested to see what QB's go to the new leagues. I hear there will be a New Jersey Ufl team. I cant wait.

I know this belongs elsewhere, but "Mark My Words" Losman will have a Maddox-like return to the NFL in 2-3 years, he always had talent, maturity was what he lacked. wink.gif

I'm sure you all will remember most of these guys, it's pretty interesting.

Yes, very interesting... The one that intrigues me most is Chris Perry

I agree that he is talented enough to make an impact in the NFL ... but he could make a huge impact in the UFL (and translate that into some big earning$ as well).

It will be interesting to see where he ends up and which guys are the QBs in the UFL.

I'm curious if the UFL has some success, and players like Losman rejuvinate their careers if more backups/once starters go to the UFL to get playing time.

I forget where I saw this but I did see that Orlando already has an offer waiting to be signed by Michael Vick if he does not end up back in the NFL. Anyone else hear/see this and what do you think about this?

Wow... Rien Long?

There's a nice mix of players there... some vets making their last hurrah and some young players looking to prove themselves. Plenty of legit players there... should make the CDS scouting service even more valuable now.

Indeed. We may need a conference call to brainstorm ways to jump on this.

Thoughts? Opinions? Questions? Ideas? about any of that...?

I read on the UFL site that next year they plan to have their draft the week before the NFL draft.

There could a real impact on NFL draft ... suppose a projected lower-round NFL guy goes "in the first round" of the UFL draft; does his NFL draft stock go up or down or does he come off the NFL board entirely? The UFL says their pay structure is 'a little better than practice player pay' with top pay at $4 million for the 7-week playing season (which they say is comparable to about $12 million annually in the NFL).

Does a player in this situation 1) take the UFL job (the "bird in the hand") and hope he does well enough to get 'picked-up' when the UFL season is over, or 2) wait until after the NFL draft to respond to the UFL, or 3) completely ignore the UFL draft and hope for the NFL to come through, knowing that if he doesn't make the NFL team roster in August, he'll probably end-up in the UFL anyway? And are there other scenarios?

Will there be any 'affiliations' between NFL and UFL teams - the league says there is no affiliation at this time, but things I've read certainly leave the door open. Suppose an NFL club had a prospect, but felt he 'needed development' - is it crazy to think an NFL club might offer cash/etc. to a UFL club to bring in that player to develop him? Or after training camp, there might be a guy who is the last one cut, would an NFL team say to a UFL team 'take this guy, and if you get him where we like him, we'll pay you $X for him in November, plus we'll contribute Y% of his salary for now.' Anything seems possible, and with the potential to get unseasoned players game experience, with professional NFL coaching, it seems like there will have to be some relationships starting to develop between NFL and UFL clubs.

Or is D-I college already the NFL developmental league, with no cost to the NFL? smile.gif

I don't suspect the UFL draft will affect the solidly "top" round (say rounds 1-4,5) players, but it could mix things up in the late rounds for sure.

I think the success of the UFL this year (everything I've seen and read really looks like Commish Huyghue is doing it up right) will determine what kind of impact their UFL draft will make on the NFL draft.

There are going to be a lot of 'unknowns' with this new league and the draft will potentially see some wild twists and turns.

Lots to talk and think about!

Very interesting speculative commentary here, Jay. My personal guess is that the UFL draft (as you have alluded) will have almost no effect on the NFL draft, year one, other than with players drafted very late. There is no established track record of success for the UFL, and agents are far more likely, IMO, to "hardball" any UFL contracts to guys they draft early who are predicted to be NFL draft picks also. With the track record of "developmental leagues" and other professional football leagues over the decades (despite my overwhelming desire to see one finally succeed) I feel that agents would almost rather have a camp offer from the NFL than a "guarantee" from the UFL of big money. A contract with longer than a 1-year term from a UFL team would have to be considered nothing more than a firm one-year contract (if they even have one year's salary for their players in the bank--which I doubt) and I bet bookies are giving even odds right now the UFL will not see year two. Chances are UFL drafees may never see year two of their contracts, and agents know it.

On the other hand, if the UFL fills stadiums, finds major TV contracts with some cash flow and is well in the black after year one, year two of the "dueling drafts" could be a very different animal, though that is not really likely, I don't think.

The NFL is EXTREMELY monopolistic in their practices, and I can bet you there have been many strategy sessions already as to how they can squelch this new threat--minor though it may currently appear to be. I will be surprised if there is any really meaningful "partnering" of any kind between the two leagues any time real soon.

Oh, and yes...DI football is DEFINITELY the NFL's developmental league, AND IT ISN'T RIGHT and ought to be changed somehow. JMHO...
