Full Version: Taylor Mays

Mr. Knowitall
Well, I see Mays is #7 on the top 100 and many other sites have him ranked highly and I understand the hype but I question it. I, personally, am not a fan of Taylor Mays, I think he's a grossly overrated workout warrior. I think Mays is an athletic Roy Williams or Michael Lewis. He's a bigger hitter with average cover skills and tight hips, I expect him to post big time workout numbers which will put him in the top 10 maybe even over Eric Berry which I think is the biggest mistake a team can make. Berry is the most complete DB since Ed Reed, he has it all and really no noticeable weaknesses. I think Mays is more of a 2nd to 3rd round pick then a top 15 guy. I just am not a big fan of his, I think he's just a big hitter...he's not much of a playmaker or cover guy and has benefited from USC's defense.

Also, is Jake Locker really at #2 guys? Jake Locker? Come on. He's over Sam Bradford? I love Sam Bradford, he doesn't have that big arm that scouts seem to love but I think Arm Strength is absolutely overrated, Bradford is polished, poised, very accurate and has a lightning quick release which is exactly what you want a QB to have when drafting one. Brady does not have elite arm strength neither does Brees but both are so good because of their elite accuracy and quick releases. I think Bradford will be an elite starter. Now onto Jake Locker, I think he's an athlete who will get overhyped. The guy doesn't even have a career 50% completion percentage in college but since he has a strong arm and is an elite athlete, scouts fall in love with him. I think if Locker is taken first round, he's a bust. He's a major project and I fail to see where he is a better prospect then even Tim Tebow. People think Tebow may move to H-Back and also think Locker is a top QB prospect? What exactly does Locker have over Tebow? Arm Strength. That's it, Tebow is more poised, accurate and has all the intangibles. Excuse me for ranting on a difference subject, I just hate my boy Tebow getting all this "hate" from the experts because he's a project when he's a better project then Locker who is being looked at as a top prospect.

I agree with you completely when it comes to Jake Locker. When I saw that he was ranked as the #2 I was shocked. I'm not saying that he isn't going to be a good quarterback, but what has he done that would make him the #2 prospect for the NFL draft? He hasn't played in a pro style offense til this up coming season and his career record is awful. They didn't even win one game last year. Your comparison to Tebow is right on the mark.

I'm going to agree and disagree with your Taylor Mays argument. I agree that Mays is overrated and that he is going to put up monster numbers at the combine. However I don't think that he is that overrated (Does that make sense). I still think that he is first round worthy, but maybe not top 10. I still think that teams will take Eric Berry over him. NFL teams are not that dumb.....except for the Raiders. I think that is your wildcard. After this past draft nothing will surprise me when it comes to Al Davis. The Raiders will probably be in the market for another safety this year when Michael Huff over stays his welcome. I could see the Raiders taking Mays over Berry because of out of this world combine numbers.

I just don't think Mays is a big enough playmaker to go round 1. Safeties rarely go round 1, I do think Mays will be a starting caliber guy with good run skills, I just don't see him as a difference maker in pass coverage. While he probably compares better to Ken Hamlin or Michael Lewis than to Roy Williams(fixing my error) as I absolutely think he's a better athlete and cover guy then Roy, I just think his coverage skills are limited. James Butler might be another good comparison.

Actually the best analog for Mays is former Trojan Joey Browner but he's 20 pounds heavier and faster, he has Boss Bailey measurables but a higher football IQ, still Berry's a better player but used correctly Mays can be the kind of player that changes the attitude of the back half of your defense, think: Jack Tatum, George Atkinson, Donnie Shell or David Fulcher, Mays lacks the schematic versatility of Berry, however in the right system he could be a monster. wink.gif

Jake Locker is a bulkier version of Rich Gannon, and like Gannon with years of hard work he could become a fine NFL QB, but Perrillioux is just as athlectic, has better mechanics, and is much more polished. wink.gif

I'm not a big fan of Mays. Sure, he has all of the elite measurables, but I don't think he has the drive to be as good as he can be. Look at some former USC guys like Ronnie Lott and Troy Polamalu... they were/are both good athletes, but what made/makes them amongst the best ever are the work ethic and attitude they bring to the game. Mays doesn't do that. He's a bit of a diva. He's also not much of a playmaker. I think he only has 4 or 5 career INTs at USC. I've seen him whiff on too many tackles too. I'll take a guy like Berry over him every day of the week. (My prediction: the Raiders draft Mays in the top 10 next year and he never makes a big impact in the NFL.)

As for Locker, he's certainly got the potential, but I agree that he doesn't belong ranked that highly. If I'm drafting a QB at the top of the first round next spring, I'm likely deciding between Colt McCoy and Jevan Snead.

Just curious, who does the postion and top 100 rankings here?

Everything is done by consensus, meaning one person manages the task with input from everyone else. We also post them for our premie members ahead of time so they can comment as well.

PatriotofMaine manages the Top100, and bwalker and I handle the position ranks (he does defense, I do offense, although those are still in a draft stage right now ... should be completed within a week or so).

I was thinking the same. And he has 4 career ints including a whopping 0 as a junior. He doesn't seem to have great ballskills and goes for the big hit when sometimes he has a chance at the int.

And if I'm drafting a QB at the top of the first round, it's Sam Bradford. I can easily look past his average to above average arm strength because the guy is just so polished and really seems like the closest thing to a can't miss QB prospect you can find.

BC, I must respectfully disagree. I don't think Mays has Browner's cover ability and ballskills. I think he's just another hard hitter with limited cover skills, he's good as a safety because he's fast enough to be a tough last line of defense and is an intimidator but I think he's going to put up stats like Archuleta, Roy Williams or Michael Lewis...i.e. a lot of tackles but low ints. I think he's better in coverage then all 3 but not a lot better and isn't much of a playmaker.

Well, Perrilioux is a thug, I'd take Dan Lefevour over both of them. Locker's problem along with him being a big time project is that he's not shown he can be durable.

I'm glad there's no Kiper or McShay, no offense to POM because I don't know if him and Kiper are still friends but I don't think much of either, Mcshay is a decent scout but I don't think Kiper is that great of an expert and am surprised he still has a job at ESPN...it must be the hair. wink.gif

Now I must respectfully disagree with your assessment of Perrilioux, he was immature and self-centered but even Miles says he's essentially a good kid and after speaking with an old school disciplinarian like his current coach, Jack Crowe you get the feeling that he has changed for the better. Don't take my word for it, call him, HC Jack Crowe-256-782-5365. I have this crazy thing about not calling a young man a "thug" until I talk to 2-3 people who know him. wink.gif

Thug might be too harsh but he has serious character issues and can't stay out of trouble.
