The Cincinnati Bearcats waltzed into OSU country and behind a young, but surprisingly stout defense, and the efficient play of QB Tony Pike, they emerged 3-0 with a tough battle with a determined Beaver squad. The no-name UC defense has only one returning starter (S Aaron Webster, Sr., # 17, 6'2", 211), but they look capable of holding up there end just fine, thank you, as "Kelly ball" scores the points behind Pike, Gilyard & Co. This could turn out to be the best team in the Big East, and may be hard pressed for defeat by anyone on their schedule.

Pike was impressive and has really come on since he was first forced into action two years ago when Mauck was not given another year of eligibility and his backup got injured early in '07. He's still kind of skinny, but he has a lot of tools. The guy who really emerged for me in this game though was OSU quarterback, Sean Canfield (another senior, #5, 6'3", 214). He really looks like a top-tier PAC-10 QB now, and even though he still makes some head scratchers, you can see the improvement game to game.

SCOUTING SUMMARY:

College: Cincinnati Conference: Big East Columnist: Erik Sandelin

Game Notes
Mardy Gilyard 1 6' 0.0" 180 4.45 WR 2010: He was held pretty much in check both as a receiver and as a KR/PR in this one, but you can still see the speed and explosiveness that has pro scouts taking notice. Not a polished hands catcher yet. Has trouble tracking the ball over the shoulder, and does not adjust all that well to the ball. Finally broke out with a game-icing 18-yard TD grab from Pike late. Was battling the sun on a couple of dropped opportunities. Toe touches nicely. Another one of those guys who will enter the NFL as a kick returner, and will undergo a crash course with the juggs machine before he is ready to contribute as more than a 3rd option as a receiver at the next level. GRADE: Neutral

Ricardo Mathews 90 6' 2.5" 294 5.15 DT 2010: Stepping up for the departed Terrill Byrd, and doing just fine, thank you. Gets under the OLineman's pads and pushes him back. Keeps blockers at bay with his hands. Can be a violent tackler. Built and knows how to tackle. Actually plays some DE when UC goes into the 3-4 and looks like a 3-4 DE at the next level too. Probably a mid-round pick at best at this point, but he may move up if my speed estimate is painfully high. GRADE: Slightly positive

Tony Pike 15 6' 6.0" 225 4.89 QB 2010: I know, I know, I know...cliche, cliche, cliche...but he looks like a young Tom Brady. Skinny kid who is just maturing....Tall enough to see the field. Has some running ability that Brady never had. Cool, and getting cooler with seasoning. Pretty good decision maker. Not all that elusive, but can make things happen with his legs when things break down. Above average arm. Skinny and must bulk up, but has the frame, and seems to have the dedication. There's something about his delivery that isn't classic, but he generally gets the ball there. Field analyst and field general. Pretty athletic for a tall skinny kid. Gets the game. Is only going to get better with more experience and physical maturity. GRADE: Positive

Kazeem Alli 8 6' 2.0" 260 4.80 TE 2010: Made an impression as both a blocker and as a pass receiver. I love the way he doesn't just chip and release. He blocks and releases. Dropped one easy one, but caught three others and made something with them too. I like the size, versatility and strength I see in the R.G. Can play FB. Poor man's Marcus Pollard? Solid character guy. GRADE: Slightly positive

Jeff Linkenbach 71 6' 6.0" 313 5.18 OT 2010: Oooo...a new LT prospect to add to the rankings if he isn't already there...Long and uses his length. Locks on and is tenacious in the run game. Needs some work on PP but has the feet. Gets perp. to the LOS at times and can be then beaten with a quick counter. Odd pass drop that needs some tech. Not a mauler, but holds his own. Plays to the whistle. Holds and gets away with it quite a bit. Sustains run blocks well. Seemingly gets stronger as the game wears on. Love his body type for the LOT position. He will play in the pros with some coaching up. GRADE: Positive

Aaron Webster 17 6' 1.3" 211 4.65 S 2010: Pro size. Showed enough speed to stay with James Rodgers on wide plays. Heads up tackler. Only returning starter on the Bearcats defense. Under-rated pro potential. GRADE: Positive

College: Oregon State Conference: Pacific 10 Columnist: Brett Walker

Game Notes
Jacquizz Rodgers 1 5' 7.0" 193 4.50 HB 2012: Playing on a bum ankle. Didn't really scout this sophomore that hard, but I doubt he has much of a pro future. Doesn't show me the elite moves he'll need to be successful with his size at the next level. Bounces everything outside--at least today--and makes his living on stretch plays that will be thoroughly corralled at the next level. GRADE: INC

Stephen Paea 54 6' 0.0" 293 5.20 DT 2010: Just a guy. Average collegiate under tackle with a decent motor. Penetrates OK. Moves around pretty well and makes some plays downfield. Not a dominant force, and disappears for stretches. Nice college player. GRADE: Neutral

Keaton Kristick 32 6' 2.0" 226 4.80 LB 2010: Can cover for a LB. Plays like a big safety much of the time. Active and gets in on a lot of action. Wrap tackler who is fundamentally sound and understands the game. Excellent chaser who looks quite a bit faster than our est. 40-time. Leader of the defense. Not sure he has enough of anything to find a home, but he has the football player's heart and hustle. GRADE: Positive

James Rodgers 8 5' 7.0" 185 4.50 WR 2011: Personally, based on what I saw today, I'd rather have James starting at Z or wingback for me than his brother starting at tailback. Shows hands an outstanding YAC potential, although he doesn't always maximize it with moves. Both brothers are deceptively strong for their size, but James shows more versatility which will be essential for a shot at the next level. I doubt he comes out anyway. Good KR/PR. Average hands that will need more reps. Also makes his living wide. Can cross the middle. Tiny. GRADE: Slightly positive

Sean Canfield 5 6' 2.8" 214 4.90 QB 2010: Just enough size, and accuracy to warrant more study. Long delivery, but snaps it off pretty well. Lefty. Feels the pressure but doesn't handle it well. Looks to get down instead of fighting to escape the rush. Decent mid-range accuracy, but struggles high and wide on longer routes. Dumb decisions at times. Has some tools and might develop from the shoulders up. GRADE: Neutral

OTHER NOTES:

OSU: Sr. WR Damola Denji (#80) was OK. LOT #77 looks good.

UC: #4/89 Alex Daniels (DL, 6'4", 257) flashed as both a tackler and rusher. Brad Jones (DB, #25, 6'1", 202) showed quite a bit and may be a PP, Erik. Soph. WR D.J. Woods (#3) outplayed Gilyard in this one. Flashed big-play ability and is definitely a guy to watch for the future.

So is Gilyard a 2nd rounder, Pike a 3rd rounder, Linkenbach a 4th, Matthews a 5th, Webster and Alli 6th/7th? And Canfield, Kristick, James Rogers are 5th/6th rounders? And Jacquizz is a UDFA?

I think Pike moved up to the 2nd round prior to his injury. Gilyard is a second rounder, yes. Linkenback is probably a 6th at best. The rest of the UC guys I'd agree...

Canfield and Kristick are UDFAs. Quizz might make the 7th.
